Caloric restriction vs. higher protein for aging | Dr. Stuart Phillips

Some animal evidence suggests that low protein intake promotes longevity. However, Dr. Phillips proposes these models may be missing a major element. For example, lab animals are raised and live in a somewhat sterile environment where they are fed on schedule. Generally, they lack ordinary exposure to diseases and accidents that can promote sudden stretches of disuse and consequent atrophy of muscles.
Without adequate muscle reserve built when young and preserved when old, we more quickly reach a "disability threshold." In this clip, Dr. Stuart Phillips discusses how building muscle reserves under adequate nutrition delays the disability threshold and contributes to more successful aging.

It's not all about life extension, it should be about extended quality of life.

Great video. I was 'fat fit' prior to the Covid pandemic, as I got in a reasonable level of daily activity walking during the daily office commute, and did gym 2 or 3x per week (most weeks) on the way home from work. But after 3 years of 'working from home' I hit age 62 having put on an extra 10 kg weight in the past few years and now having less muscle mass than just a few years ago (noticeably in the legs). So I'm now having to do caloric restriction to try to shed the extra weight and continue down to the 'healthy weight' that I always should have maintained, PLUS at the same time eat enough protein to try to maintain lean mass by doing 3x/wk weight training. My overall body fat % shows that I have lost quite a few kg of lean mass now that I've got back down to the weight I was a decade ago, so really need to focus on preserving (and adding, if possible) muscle mass while trying to reduce body fat.

For myself, I am down 70 pounds on a high satiety, low glycemic index diet. Fatty steak, eggs, green veggies, etc. Blood work looks good. And, hiking for exercise.

What people need to understand is there's only two states to the human body, anabolic or catabolic states.

Sprained ankle or any other common problem with legs and you are going to spend at least 2 weeks sitting.

Covid had me off my feet for over 6 weeks and my muscle mass has pretty much evaporated. :(

The animals need Divine intervention. We may have shorter lives because we abuse things.
