With no brillant drummer...no dire straits possible...thanks for the great job you've done on this 90 incredible tour !!! I was at Nîmes and Montauban... it was absolutely amazing ❤❤❤❤
That man was built to rock stadiums, was blown away by his playing on that tour
Chris, your live drumming on this tour had me absolutely mesmerised as a young, aspiring drummer. Thanks for this tutorial and thanks for the memories.
Brilliant. The best opening song ever for a live performance. I’ve watched this time and time again on VHS tape version and especially the drum parts blew my mind. Love it.

When I discovered on every street at 14 yrs old now 43) the drumming was so good and different from anything on the radio and charts, I became fascinated, I then learnt the album beat for beat! Eventually 'the Internet' gave me amazing footage of Chris playing on every street concerts and On The Night. I thought for years it was Chris playing on the original, On Every street album, to which I now know it was Jeff Porcaro. 1000% respect and appreciation for Chris to play the same, so we get to see the drumming live and study it. Videos like this from Chris are so amazing, thanks Chris so much!!.
Jeff Porcaro RIP was my all time favorite drummer, but I would like to thank you for the amazing performance on this video and on the DS 1992 tour.

Greaat. I'm from Brasil and i love on the night dvd. Please post Moreir from This dvd. Thanks yooou. Congrats
Back in ‘92 this was the first CD I ever bought, I was 12 at the time. The drumming on this album inspired me to take up drumming myself after much air drumming along to these songs… So thank you for the inspiration🙏💪🏻. Still one of my all time favorite albums, great drumming. And the sound of those N&C drums is marvelous! Rock on! Greetings from the Netherlands
Thank you so much Chris. During the On the Night tour you inspired me to learn to drum (at a late age!). It has become my main hobby and I play in a band! Cheers from Brasil (I did note you inserted some bossa nova grooves - double kicks - in one of the songs during the show)
Oh my god... How many times have I listen to the last 2 bars of the drums/percussions duet... Kum-ta-ga kum-ta-ga kum-ta-ga kum-fla-ta-ga kum-fla-ta-ga kum-tom-tom-tom-fla ;-) I love it so much !!

Thank you Chris. This is a marvelous gift for all DS's fans. I had the pleasure and the honor to see Dire Straits live during the OES tour. I remember your great ability and your passion to play the drums and the great expressiveness of the Dire Straits orchestra. Yeah, the legendary Dire Straits wasn't an ordinary rock band but an authentic multi talented orchestra. How many awesome talents in this band! Only for the drums and percussion in the Dire Straits history it's possible to mention Pick Withers, Terry Williams, Omar Hakim, Manu Katché, Jeff Porcaro, Danny Cummings and Chris Whitten. Thank you so much!!!!!
The incredible sound of those drums.... .just fantastic! I have no words!

Insane drummer.
First: Dire Straits 'Calling Elvis', a masterpiece, from start to finish. Second, Chris Whitten, you are a true, professional without a doubt, your timing, the exact time, it shows, your talent, without your drumsticks the piece would not be as masterful as it is, Chris, great drummer, few like you . Congratulations plus the pride of having been the performer of Dire Straits magic, along with MK. Golden age of rock music.

Awesome! Thank you!
Dear Chris, I'm a long time DireStraits fan and I actually saw you guys in oslo during the "on every street" tour. I was like 18 at the time and this was my first experience with a big stadium concert. And I was blown away , for many reasons: First: TWO drummers? , learned later that this was drummer+ percussionist..........anyway, amazing............that drum/percussion part of "calling elvis" towards the end there.......oh boy.......Second..... Paul Franklin.....introducing pedal steel guitar to something other than country music!! Third and final: Why is it (on every street tour) that during "sultans of swing" you sit in front of the stage with a different drum kit? Have wondered about that since -92....Probably a good reason, I'm sure, but I can't figure it out...........please educate🙂

Because in the main show I was way up high at the back. Sultans started out as a four piece in that show, but I was the only one far from the action. It meant my drumming seemed divorced from the music.

Ahh, off course!, Can't believe I missed that for all these years! Makes perfect sense now! Memories from -92 is somewhat blurry, and by watching video recordings you can easily tell that Paul F is not there at first, but hard to tell about the other guys unless you really pay attention. And with everybody being there at the end, I always assumed they were always there, just not doing a whole lot until the last part. Anyway, the -92 tour Sultans is on the very top of the list of my favorite live performances. The drummer had quite a lot to do with that! Thanks a lot for your reply!!

When the Calling Elvis album came out, I thought that the opening song of that recording was really different to anything I ever heard at that moment. Although I already was a musician myself, my musical knowledge was too limited to deeply analyse and properly understand the piece. I found it odd and didn't exactly love it, but I could feel it was a really good piece of rock music and therefore I enjoyed it so much. Three decades later, I absolutely love the piece, which I often listen to, and I have finally understood that Dire Straits created a true masterwork. This song has a soul and a sound absolutely unique like nothing I ever heard before. Paul Franklin's pedal steel guitar sound blended with the rest of the band so well and with him in the band, I think Dire Straits absolutely reinvented itself. Everybody knows that Mark has always been a wonderful soloist, and Alan's keyboard textures and piano arrangements are simply perfect and pivotal for the sound of the band. But Calling Elvis brought us another genius, an absolutely wonderful player that in my opinion, could play as creatively as Mark. And I really mean that. The amount of melodic ideas that Paul presents in just that song is simply overwhelming. Nothing I ever heard before or after that album resembles that piece, and for me, the song Calling Elvis is almost a new genre in itself. Chris, what can you tell us about the piece? What did you think when you heard if for the first time? Thank you so much.
