Lucky bastard, I never had the opportunity. I almost saw Mark back in the 90s (Golden Heart Era) but between work and finances it didn't come together.

MK/Dire Straits is a genre onto itself
I was at the concerts in the UK. As a guitarist, myself, I wanted to put my guitars back in their cases and not bother again. 🎸

Same here. But then I still try to play these songs... 😊
The repeating steel guitar riff is actually Paul Franklin's(steel guitar player) warmup excercise that Mark overheard and liked so much he wanted it in the song..
When I first saw Knopfler on a solo tour in 2001 this was the opening number with a slightly stripped back band. It was utterly immense. By then he was using a Les Paul but that Pensa Suhr he used in the video gave some killer tones.
I saw them twice on that tour. They were amazing and to this day I’ve never experienced anything like Dire Straits live!! And I’ve been to quite a few concerts and seen quite incredible artists though!

I saw them on the on every street tour and agree still by far the best live band I’ve seen .
Love how your explanations make it easy for the average person to understand some of the technical stuff. You're really fun to watch!
Brilliant. And just think, this isn’t like a highlight or high point of the concert - this was the opening number... I saw them three times on this tour in London, absolutely brilliant every time. I still rank Alchemy above this, but On The Night is a fantastic live album/video with brilliant songs and brilliant performances. Romeo And Juliet, Brothers In Arms, On Every Street, You And Your Friend (my favourite probably), this one Calling Elvis, Heavy Fuel - it’s all brilliant and get better every time you hear it! Great reaction with great insights, as always. Big fan of your channel.
MK fan from Brazil....
In England we would go home after the pubs closed and sit around listening to music, smoking joints, talking and laughing, just enjoying each other's company and the joy of discovering new artists and music. My friend Michael (r.i.p.brother.) was manager of the Virgin record store at Marble Arch when we shared a flat in London. He would bring home 3 or 4 new albums every day - his collection numbered in the thousands. Just as a random suggestion, try listening to Ry Cooder "Bop 'til you Drop" , a really good guitar album, if my memory serves. As a non-player I admire your artistry and really look forward to your insights and commentary. Keep going, this old geezer loves every minute listening here in Toronto. Peace out.
Brilliant start to a concert, Mark was on top form, wait till you hear his blues playing on You and Your Friend from the same concert.
I’m really enjoying these reviews of Dire Straits' fabulousness. Thank you so much for your astute analysis. Being a fan of DS/MK, I know all the guitar solos and it's great to be able to hear them again, and to appreciate them even more with your great input. This is giving me much joy and many goosebumps. I also love the many great comments from all the knowledgeable fans. I'm learning a lot. Keep up the good work, Faana.
I saw this in the Australian leg of this On Every Street Tour. Loved my first experience so much I saw them 3 more times by myself all in about a week in Melbourne. I can tell you the bass in this song goes right through your body. I've never felt anything like it. The sound quality was ridiculously good. Cheers all the best from Oz. 👍🎸🎸
Nice to see you reviewing this 👍😊. Mark's music is a must for me.
You can get into a fugue state with Knopfler. The greatest sustained expression on guitar has to be ‘Tunnel of Love’ Mark emoting greatly here. Ref. Wembley live 1985. Loving your channel.
I know the song but never saw the performance. Thanks for your reaction
And amazing Danny Cummings is still in MK's band
I said only one thing: Planet of new Orleans, Brussels '91. You will enjoy :)

It's my favorite song of all time, not just Dire Straits....of all time in the history of music. I don't know why it just is with me 😊

great. catchy tune.
U have to listen walk of life - live on the night.. the next song of this concert.. amazing song!
Phil Palmer was the other guitarist on this. You should see him, Mark Knopfler and Eric Clapton, live at Knebworth 1990. Awesome.
Never seen this song played live before, absolutely fantastic. Thanks for reacting. If you want some older Dire Straits, one of my favorite pieces 'In the Gallery' played live. Audience 100 or so.

Sir Mk GOAT
I attended 5 concerts from that tour. How I wish I could get back to that time.
I'd love your take on "where you think you're going"
This was recorded at Feyenoord stadium in Rotterdam. A great song by Mark to better see how diverse a musician he is is "Song for Sonny Liston" at the AVO session in Basel, also Danny Cummings who was the amazing percussionist you saw in that drum solo here plays drums there kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z3iBrtCoqc6cgpM.html
I really enjoy how you show some of the music on your guitar and explain the technique. You should take a look at Mark Knopfler and The Notting Hillbillies.
Thank you for reviewing Calling Elvis. On the Night 1993 is one of my favorites. But for me, I prefer or I like more their version of CE in Basel 1992. Pls review next You and Your Friend from the same concert On the Night 1993. Thank you so much.
Love them. Thanks for sharing with us
We have paid one hell've price for convenience.!? I well remember and interview with Don Henley (Eagles "when hell freezes over" tour), where the interviewer asked what he thought of MTV , Don said it would ruin music because the video would become more important than the music and that he isn't an actor he's a musician. He was right, but it was a symptom of what was to come ,where fame and fortune became the reason to make music not a consequence of making music.
John Mayer and BB King Live Improv Jam
Mark is a big Elvis fan. He released a song with Thin Lizzy's Phil Lynott - 'King's Call' in 1980 about Elvis' death.

Oh, wow, I had no idea! Thank you for sharing this!
Could you do "Sailing to Philadelphia" please? I have been rocking out to Mark Knopfler's music since I was born in '83. We had the Live in Sydney '86 concert on VHS and I played that tape to death.
Tune this i remember when this was released ❤
MK describes his music generally as where the Tyne meets the Delta. The Tyne being a river in Northern England that runs through Newcastle where he grew up, and the Delta refers to the Mississippi Delta in the southern US. So while DS was a rock band it was heavily influenced by British folk music as well as Jazz, Blues and Country music. MK has worked with many country artists, and has produced for Dylan.
🤘😁🇫🇮💙🪄🎼✨💯👍
Really enjoy your reactions & explanations ref. DS & MK. You are right on target about the many styles in Marks musical output, and he has said in interviews that as far as he’s concerned there are no rules in making music & that he himself cannot be slotted into any specific genre. Live ‘On the Night’ is my favourite Dire Straits concert to watch (with the exception of the Alchemy Live ‘Sultans’ & ‘Telegraph Road’), every song is an outstanding performance. It would be great if you could try to fit in a reaction to more songs from this particular concert, especially ‘You and Your Friend’, ‘Brothers in Arms’, ‘Private Investigation’, ‘Heavy Fuel’ etc. This was DS last concert tour supporting their sixth & final album ‘On Every Street’. Mark is a musical magician with his prolific songwriting & brilliant lyrics, musical arrangements, inimitable guitar playing & vocals. ‘MK forever’ fans are so lucky to have had a further 26 years treasure trove of new songs from him with his Solo Bandmates, not forgetting his endless collaborations (Listen to his guitar input on ‘Have all the songs been Written’ by The Killers, 2023); and 9 movie soundtracks that hold some beautiful gems. I❤MK
Mark Knopfler's songs are movies for the ears. Your reactions are thoughtful and philosophical as well as musical = unique! Being a DS fan since 1980, age 13, I really enjoy them very much. I know I'm suppose to buy you a cup of coffee... Sorry. Please listen to: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pY2ZpaSQlMfHXZM.htmlsi=WKXHhzb-9iUZYIMZ kzread.info/dash/bejne/pY2ZpaSQlMfHXZM.htmlsi=WKXHhzb-9iUZYIMZ The arrangement and the interpretation between Mark's guitar and Chris White's sax is unearthly. Chris' sax solo on Romeo and Juliet leaves me lost for words. Mark took away his own original guitar solo in favour of Chris' playing. Such remarkable musicians they were. I'm lucky to have heard them live twice. Best concerts of my life. Hope you will enjoy and love it too. 🙏🎶🎸+🎷

All these Dire Straits live videos you've been watching have really amazing production values - the sound quality, the multiple camera angles etc: This is the first time watching for me also, I'm interested to know if Mark had control over that aspect of his performances.
I remember when after 7 years waiting after BIA, I put for the first time the OES album and this song started on my CD, It took me time to connect with the sound, but it's and amazing song, always on DS, live version was 10 times better than the studio recording. I love see that you take many Knopfler songs to the channel, if I can make you a recomendation, look Speedway at Nazareth from his 2nd solo álbum, it's not too much known, but it's incredible, for me his Best solo song. I think there's only an official video with Emmylou Harris, but for me this version is too much better. Keep on!! kzread.info/dash/bejne/maqZrNagdLPKl6w.htmlsi=w6vrfs0GlmjXmuWt
You are quite right, music has gotten decidedly dumber. But that should not be surprising as the western educational system has been systematically making each generation dumber, less educated, less creative, and unable to use the higher functions and critical thinking. Sad state of affairs, but it was already underway when I was in high school, back in the early 1970's when much of the fantastic music came out. And it has gotten progressively much worse ever since.

So true. And so sad.
This was the song that i hated from Dire Straits. They where never the same after this song. Too was basically a country and western song.
I love Dire Straits, but... this song is one of the worst, if not the worst... boring and insipid... unbearable! 😫🥱 I went to see a live concert here in Spain (91 or 92) and the show started with this song that seemed endless to me 😓. Edit: listened again,, yes... MK plays nice and cool guitar licks, I love them!... but I don't like this song.
