Called 911 After Our Golden Retreiver Bites our Son in the Face while RVing to Florida!!

⭐️ About this episode:
On our way to Florida for a month in the RV and once we reach Florida our Golden Retriever, Gus, bites our son in the face as we are traveling down the road in Jacksonville. Blood was everywhere and we didn’t know what to do or where to go so we called 911 and the first responders took Laine & Chason to the hospital as I followed behind in the RV. We was shocked that our beloved Golden Retriever Gus could do this and now we are not sure what’s next with LPO6 and Gus.

As a dog trainer please don't stop him from warning you that he's upset about something or he'll bite without warning at all and get him a calming aid to help him cope with the rv stress and teach the kids to know what his warnings are and call a certified trainer back home to hopefully work through this. I'm so happy that you're son is ok and not afraid of the pup

This is good advice. Sometimes dogs feel trapped, if Gus leaves the situation try to teach the kiddos to let him leave, but it he attacks without trying to get away this could he hard to change. So good for you for recognizing th4 the RV may not be a good place for hime because theres not as many spots to get away to.

I’m so sorry this happened but so happy he’s doing well 💕 Your video made me cry. My granddaughter was also bit in the face by her own dog. It was severe. She was 3 at the time. She was flown to a hospital and was actually brought back to life several times. It was one of the hardest things to go through. She survived, had several surgeries and just graduated 9th grade last week! Thank you for sharing this story as so many people blame the owners of the dog but we really have no idea why suddenly the family dog (Labrador mix) bit her.

Kudos to you for not immediately getting rid of him. You are right, some dogs are just not good w9th younger kids and are naturally food aggressive. Just to be safe, I'd recommend them not touching him while he is eating. A lot of dogs also consider a person that is eye to eye with them as a threat.

This brings back so many memories of when our Rottweiler bit our son. He was 7 at the time and he kept jumping on the dog. After many warnings to stop the dog took it into his own hands. We threw him in the car and raced to the hospital. It was so so bad. Less the an inch from getting his temple. He ended up with 21 stitches. I was scared of that dog for almost a year. But we never had another incident again. Would you know that boy and dog became the best of friends. He had so much more respect for the dog after that. That boy is 28 now.

Everyone else is saying the same things, just adding my similar thoughts to reinforce the already excellent and positive feedback. 1.) there may be an underlying physical issue going on with Gus. Have a vet examine Gus thoroughly, including a full blood work-up. Gus may be in early stages of developing diabetes or thyroid disease, which affects how his body processes nutrition, and could be why he has become protective of his food. 2.) Have him neutered ASAP, truthfully should have been done when he was still a young puppy. Intact male dogs are more aggressive than neutered male dogs. Both the thorough exam and neutering are things you can have taken care of while still in Florida. 3.) When you return to Missouri, enroll Gus in a reputable obedience school. Maybe take turns, as family members, acting as Gus's handler at each session, so all your children and both of you learn how to respect the dog's space, what causes dogs to react badly in stressful situations, etc. Education for both the dog and your entire family is key to ensuring this kind of event doesn't happen again going forward. 4.) Of course supervise your children's interactions with Gus and be quick and consistent to step in if either Gus or the kids start to misbehave with each other.

It started when my grandson started walking. It was so unexpected and out of character for the dog. Heartbreaking, confusing and upsetting all at the same time. My response is keeping them both safe. Prayers for you. As long as Chase is generally ok with Gus, as a single man who has had rehomed semi aggressive dogs in the past, I'd encourage you to understand, as I think you do, that when a dog is under stress, a quick nip to tell someone, including other dogs, to back off is a very natural action. I don't know if you'll ever be able to be 100% confident about Gus, he's only a dog, but you might be able to use this as a teaching moment for your kids and yourself. Most of the time when a dog nips the dog doesn't intend to catch anything but a mouthful of air, and a raised lip is another sign, he is trying to communicate with you. A nip is not an attack and should not be thought of in the same way. Grace.

I have had many dogs and have 4 children all with 1-2 years apart. We had a dog crate for our dog and taught him that was his home. We could leave the door open and tell them to go home and he would go lay in his crate. We also taught our children that was the dogs space. If he was in his home do not bother him Dogs need their own space just like people. I truly think it being new to Gus and not having a defined space probably made him agitated and it might not would have happened. It really is just a learning curve and I am praying you find the right decision for you family.

So sorry you are going through this experience! It’s tough to see your kiddo get hurt by someone you trust. Praying for healing for everyone (including the pup). Chasen has a beautiful forgiving heart! Brave little man! Blessings to you! From personal experience with our toddler and border collie it sounds like your dog needs some space. We had to teach our son to respect our dog and leave him alone when the dog showed any signs of needing space. And, of course, we had to work with the dog not to ever get aggressive with our child no matter how annoying he’d be.

I am so happy to see Chason is okay and looks like his face is healing well, so brave as it is very scary for such a small child and us as parents. I totally understand how you feel it is only natural, we all need to be aware of animals signs that they arent happy as they cant speak to us any other way. Its not usually a good idea to be up in an animals face when they are eating. It could also be that Gus has enjoyed the freedom and space on the farm and the cabin, so to now be in the RV is probably very hard for him to adjust to. Need to build the trust both ways. I hope you have a wonderful trip going forward take care xx

I am so sorry that you went/are going thru this. As many have said, a good trainer that can work with the whole family will help. A growling dog is signaling and your 14 month old dog is acting like a hormone driven teenager that didn’t get the car keys. It was likely just the perfect storm for Gus and any dog will bite. I commend you all for your measured response. Again an experienced trainer and time may just be what you need to rebuild the trust. Safe travels and yes if needed , any Florida Golden Rescue could help you if you decide to go that route.

We had two golden retrievers, Sampson and Delilah. Sampson was dognapped and was missing for several weeks. He was never the same after that. I had 2 kids my 3 sisters had a total of 11 kids and all 13 of the kids could do anything to the dogs including jumping on them, pulling their tails, take food from them, hang onto them In the pool to get pulled around. Nothing bothered the dogs. They were the most gentle passive dogs. I'm not sure what they did to him but he was let loose and he came home. But when Sampsom came back he was vicious to kids and even me. We loved him dearly and tried to get him help and therapy training. He bit one of my nieces and that was the last straw and we end up having to put him down. After that we got a female Rottweiler puppy and she was a wonderful replacement. She had the same temperament and gentleness that Sampson had maybe even more mellow. Kids could do anything to her and she would just lick them to death. She was by far my most favorite dog ever.

I’m so sorry you guys had to go through this and I’m glad he is doing better. When I was in elementary/junior high school I was at a friends house and went to pet their black lab when she was asleep and I got bit in the nose. it was the first and last time I have ever per a dog while they were asleep, but I have also gotten better with dogs. Continue prayers your trip goes well and you can find training for your dog.

I'm so sorry for your sweet boy!!! Thankful that he is ok and that the other kids are well, too. I will share that we had almost this exact same experience with our dog. Once he realized that he could nip at our son, it was impossible to re-train him. Believe me, we tried everything. We even tried re-homing to a family with no small kids. At first it was a small nip on the hand, and we made all of the justifications, and then he wound up biting our son on the face in almost The exact same way that Gus did, but it was not as severe. The last time was completely unprovoked. We were traveling, too, and wound up surrendering him at a shelter because we could no longer trust him with our son. We had the exact same emotions and we struggled and all cried, but know it was the best decision for our family. Whatever you decide to do in the future, you don't have to justify your reasons to anyone. You do what is best for your family!

I had the best boxer, he lived 10 years, never ever bit any dog or person, and was the best babysitter. Also he had the calmest and nicest demeanor and I did feed him 3 times a day, that really helps keep them happy and calm and as a plus avoids the danger of strangled intestines.

I disagree, dogs are a part of the family, you need to take care of them as much as you need of your kids, and if you notice your kids are not doing well on a road-trip you don’t abandon or find a new family for them, you figure out what’s wrong and if they can’t take a road trip you don’t make a road-trip, or you find someone to care for them while you’re on a road-trip

Glad your son is ok. My daughter was bit by a Shar Pei when she was 5. She had 32 stitches in the back of her head and ear. To this day she says it was her fault and shes 32 now. Kids love animals. I'm shocked to here the breed of the dog doing this but clearly something isnt right. Hope you find a good solution for all. ❤

Awww poor little guy. Bad bite.Praise God he didn’t damage his actual eye.I’m so glad he’s ok.It’s a difficult position to be in.I was bit by a neighbour’s dog when I was a kid..still have the scars.Sometimes it happens sadly.Perhaps some dog training when you get back home might help.If he’s never shown aggression when he’s home...it stands to reason that he’s just really stressed travelling and sadly lashed out....in which case that could easily be fixed by not travelling with him like you mentioned.Otherwise all you can do is keep reiterating to the kids not to grab at him or go near him when he’s eating...especially while travelling. If he’s growling when he eats maybe feed him elsewhere...away from the kids...the bedroom maybe and close the door and give him space to eat.My brother does that with his dog and it’s worked out well. You’ll know in your hearts what to do longterm but for now travel safe and try to enjoy the rest of your trip.Your family is in my prayers. 🤗 ❤️

Glad your son is ok! As a Vet Tech, I have a healthy respect for all dog breeds and have tried to teach my kids that also. Please have Gus checked out at a Vet before you make a final decision on where he will go from here. I think a neuter may help some. It sounds like he loves lots of space to run around and RVing is too confining. Hug those little ones and have a good rest of your trip!

So sorry this happened to you. Our granddaughter, who was 12 yrs old at the time was bit by the neighbors golden on the arm. The dog had never bit anyone before, so it was so puzzling. You may want to take Gus to the vet and get him checked out...maybe he wasn’t feeling good, I have also heard neutering him helps with this type of thing. Praying for guidance through this.

So glad your little boy is doing well❤️ I agree with you a 100% some dogs including goldens have stress wether it’s storms or small spaces. We travel with a cat and a Siberian Husky when we go camping. We have a pull trailer so both are in the back seat together. Out husky, she is a doll at 3 years old but I have also notice traveling is not fun for her either. I have also learned though with our cat any major discomfort wether it’s pain or stress they have instincts that kick in. Poor Gus was most likely stressing hard. They don’t think properly under stress much like us☹️ I love it that your giving him a chance and your idea of leaving him at home when traveling is great as well. We have dog trainers we trust maybe there’s one you know that will have some helpful tips to help Gus as well. My heart ❤️ goes out to you all I hope the healing process from this unfortunate event is a smooth one. Hugs to you all! ❤️❤️❤️
