Calculate your chances of a spontaneous labor & then increase your chances of a natural labor start!

Did you know that you can calculate your chances of having a spontaneous labor? You can! You can even find out, how likely it is that a medical induction will be a success, in case you do NOT go into labor spontaneously!
So, in this video, Nathalie Kaufmann, Pregnancy & Birth Consultant and TCM Therapist, and Mathias Ritter, Researcher and Science Geek, discuss the Bishop score, which is a measure for how ready your body is for labor!
First, they explain what the Bishop score is and why it can tell you how likely you will go into labor spontaneously as well as how likely a medical labor induction will be a success. Moreover, they explain the 5 factors the Bishop score comprises and they discuss what your cervix and your baby’s engagement have to do with it. Next, they show you how to calculate your own Bishop score in order for you to be able to calculate your chances of a spontaneous labor. Afterwards, they explain in detail how to interpret your own Bishop score. And finally, they discuss tools that a woman can apply in order to increase her Bishop score and in order to increase her chances of a spontaneous labor!

    Thanks so much for watching! 😊 With this video, we wanted to show you a simple tool, the Bishop Score, which can help you understand how likely it is that you will have a spontaneous labor. On top of that, we also wanted to show you what strategies we would pursue after calculating the Bishop score, in order to increase the score and thus to increase a woman’s chances of labor to start naturally.

    39 weeks this week and ready to have this baby! Last I had an exam, I was 50% effaced and 2.5cm dilated and I’m soooo hoping my next appointment (here in three days) shows some progress because I am absolutely miserable.😭 I’ve done it all, the exercises, the walking, doing the deed, castor oil, nipple stimulation, all of it and still no baby. I had my daughter at 37 weeks and she was 7lbs so I’m very concerned about how big this baby may be! I’m very tiny with small hips so I’m so hoping my doctor will recommend inducing me because I’m sure he’s too big for my hips to bare now.

    Hi there Alexis ❤️, thanks a lot for sharing your story with us! Poor you! ❤️ You must be super worried about the situation right now! But please do not worry just yet! If the size could become a problem, we are sure that they are going to induce you. And just because your first baby was very big, does not mean that the same applies to your second baby! Also, don't forget that during your last exam, you were already 2.5cm dilated. This clearly shows you that your body is getting ready for labor! (We regularly meet women whose cervix is still closed in week 41!) If you have been exercising and tried things like nipple stimulation, then that's all you can do. However, as we always say, you cannot force your body into labor. Natural labor induction only works if your body is ready for labor. And this is different from woman to woman. Finally, please keep in mind that in second time moms, things often go REALLY fast. Also, even with a large baby, labor is probably gonna be easier and faster. So, please don't worry just yet (besides worries increase your stress levels which can interfere with labor). Try to relax! Try acupuncture! And trust that everything will be fine! We wish you ALL THE BEST for the upcoming birth, for you and your baby!! ❤️

  • @CareAboutLittleOnes

    @CareAboutLittleOnes

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi there 😊, that's great to hear! Thanks so much for your feedback!! 😊 Regarding your question: In theory, you could calculate the Bishop score. But there is no point in doing that because in 99% of all pregnancies, it will be very low at 27 weeks. Actually, it SHOULD be very low. If it is high at 27 weeks, it would mean that you are at risk of going into preterm labor... The Bishop score basically tells you how ready your cervix is for labor which requires your cervix to go through certain changes. But those changes are only supposed to happen at the end of your pregnancy... We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

    Hi there! 😊 Actually, unfortunately, there is not much that you can do... Administering antibiotics is the only thing they can do because there is a very small risk of infection for your baby. And the antibiotics are supposed to help prevent that infection. So, please try not to worry too much about it! Apparently, you are in good hands! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby! ❤️

Bishops score about 9, still waiting for labour to start. I get a lot of false labours (prodromal labour) starting from 30 weeks 😂 just waiting, my last baby came at 42 weeks by LMP, my first was also over 41 weeks, and my mum's pregnancies were all late too so I expected to go over, so hard when dealing with prodromal labours making you feel like baby is coming then just stops 😅

    Hi there 😊, oh that's fantastic! We think we never ever had a woman who did not go into labor spontaneously with a score above 9! However, please keep in mind that the Bishop score does not tell you anything about WHEN a woman goes into labor. Particularly when it comes to women who gave birth to babies in the past already, we often observe that they don't feel anything for the longest time. And then all of a sudden, they go into labor. And the next thing they know is: baby is here! So, don't worry that you are not feeling anything! Your body clearly is preparing for the big day! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for the upcoming birth, for you and your baby!! ❤️

    Hi there Ying 😊, sorry for my late reply: somehow, I completely oversaw your comment yesterday...! We had like 100 or more comments only within 24 hours...! 🤪😅 So, first of all, these are questions we would ask a Hebamme. Even when she is not the one who does vaginal exams, she would still see the results of those exams in your reports (at least normally). If your Hebamme does not know them, ask the person who does your vaginal exams... Second, here are the terms they use in the German speaking area for the "Geburtsreifebeurteilung" (i.e. Bishop score): Consistency = Konsistenz der Portio (weich - 3P, mittel - 1.5P, rigide - 0P) Effacement = Länge der Portio (0cm - 3P, 1cm - 1.5P, more than 1cm - 0P) Dilation = Muttermund (geschlossen - 0P, 1cm dilated - 1P, 2cm dilated - 2P, more than 2cm dilated - 3P) Position of the cervix = Stellung der Portio (weit hinten gelegen - 0P, gering hingen gelegen - 1P, zentral gelegen - 2P) Position of the baby/Engagement = Leitstelle (2cm über I-Linie - 0P; 1cm über oder in I-Linie - 1P; 2cm unter I-Linie - 2P) In order to understand what we mean by "I-Linie" in terms of baby's engagement, you can watch this video if you like: kzread.info/dash/bejne/a32Mq5esd5DKZ9o.html I hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

    Hi there! 😊 Sometimes, we have the feeling that youtube can read minds! 😅 Many women tell us that some of our videos just pop up right when they need it! First of all, please note that the amniotic fluid level DOES decrease from about week 35 of a pregnancy onwards. It's normal. Of course, it depends how low your levels are. However, if your doctor was concerned, they would treat your for that (f.e. with L-arginine supplementation or injections of saline solutions through your cervix). By the way: drinking lots of water DOES increase the level too, so it's great that you do that! Don't worry too much though! 38 is really an advanced stage of a pregnancy and things can really go fast from now on! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for the upcoming birth, for you and for your baby! ❤️

    Hi there 😊, please don't worry just yet! On average, a pregnancy lasts between 38 and 42 weeks. Everything within that range is considered "normal". That said, there ARE things which have helped other women in similar situations: 1. Nipple stimulation (just keep in mind that it may not be done with a few minutes per day) 2. Reflexology (same as nipple stimulation: it may not be done with a few minutes per day only) 3. Acupuncture (acupuncture itself cannot induce labor; however, it can help in cases when a woman cannot go into labor because of high stress levels because acupuncture can really bring your stress levels down. So if your wife is really stressed, acupuncture could help) 4. Exercises on a birthing ball Of course, there is also Castor oil. However, personally, we always treat Castor oil as last resort simply because of the side effects. Also, you can never be sure if it is going to work... Still, it CAN be super effective for labor induction. Just discuss with your doctor first, if Castor oil is the right tool in your particular case... We talk more about these tools and also how to apply them in these 2 videos: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aqaZysSuoNrOqrw.html (reflexology, nipple stimulation, Castor oil) kzread.info/dash/bejne/h5umxLGcZMbLkrw.html (birth ball exercises) Finally, keep in mind that things can sometimes go really fast. A woman may not see any signs of labor whatsoever. And then a moment later, she is in labor and a few hours later her baby is born (we have seen many such cases). This happens particularly often in second pregnancies because the body has done this once already... We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for the upcoming birth, for you, your wife and your baby!! 😊

    What to do to move the placenta upwards as it's on low lying.

  • @CareAboutLittleOnes

    @CareAboutLittleOnes

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi there Gulshan 😊, unfortunately, there is absolutely nothing that you can do to change anything about the position of your placenta. However, luckily, as your pregnancy progresses, your uterus expands upwards. And in the course of that, it pulls the placenta upwards too. Therefore, we can only really say if the position of the placenta is gonna be a problem for your delivery or not, once you are closer to your delivery. But most of the times, a low-lying placenta is no longer a problem once you reach your due date... An exception is placenta previa. Because in that case, your placenta completely covers your cervix. And that's unlikely to improve as your pregnancy progresses... We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

We know several women who have gone through both, natural and medically induced labor and say that there is no difference in terms of pain - at least for them. Also, if you are already 2cm dilated, then that's great news because it shows you that your body is preparing for labor. So maybe, your body is faster than your doctor! 😊 Finally, keep in mind that there are tools which could help speed up the process. Any tips on how to descend baby's head even more?

  • @CareAboutLittleOnes

    @CareAboutLittleOnes

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi there 😊, yes, in that case, there are two things which can help, given, that you are allowed to exercise. 1. Pelvic rocking on a birth ball (we explain how they work at the end of this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/imensbGbob2uorw.html) 2. Deep Squats Both can help a baby descend even more, particularly, when baby is already at station -2. One last thing: ideally, your baby is in a position in which baby faces your back because this is the optimal position for labor. If not, it would be best to wait a bit with these exercises until the baby has rotated into such a back-facing position. We mention this because once your baby is engaged, it is more difficult for the baby to rotate into the right position (although it can still happen). We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby! ❤️

    Hi there 😊, please note that questions like whether or not your discharge is normal is something that only your doctor can tell you! We can only tell you - in general - that women often have more discharge at the end of their pregnancy. So, normally, this is nothing to worry about. But again, if you are concerned, please talk with your midwife! It's her job to be there for you! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

    Hi there ❤️, poor you! But don't be discouraged just yet! Please note that on average, a pregnancy lasts between 38 and 42 weeks. Maybe, your baby just finds it too cozy in there! 😊 But again, don't worry because these things can sometimes go really really fast! Only recently, we met a woman who told us that she was going to work in the morning, no signs of labor whatsoever. And by 8pm in the evening (on the same day), she held her baby in her arms 😊. So, as we said, it can go REALLY fast! There are several things which have helped other women in similar situations: 1. Nipple stimulation (just keep in mind that it may not be done with a few minutes per day) 2. Reflexology 3. Acupuncture (mainly addressing stress level; and please note: it has to be acupuncture; acupressure would not help in your case) 4. Exercises on a birthing ball Of course, there is also Castor oil. However, please never try Castor oil without the approval of your doctor! We talk more about these tools and also how to apply them in these 2 videos: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aqaZysSuoNrOqrw.html (reflexology, nipple stimulation) kzread.info/dash/bejne/h5umxLGcZMbLkrw.html (birth ball exercises) We wish you ALL THE BEST for the upcoming birth, for you and for your baby! ❤️

    Hi there 😊, if you know whether your baby is engaged or not, then you can certainly calculate the bishop score without an ultrasound... That's because apart from the engagement status, the rest is just information you get from your OB after a cervical checkup. So if you have that information, you can calculate it straight away... We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

    Hi there Anna 😊, there are two kinds of exercises which have helped other women engage their baby in their pelvis: 1. Deep Squats 2. Pelvic rocking on a birth ball (which we explain in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/imensbGbob2uorw.html) Regarding the position of the cervix: There aren't many studies on how to support that process of getting the cervix forward. However, it normally happens as part of the cervical ripening/effacement process at the latest. Therefore, we normally try acupressure to help with that. But please don't worry about that too much. This has hardly ever been an issue in the cases we know... So, what we do at the clinic is: From week 37, we start preparing the body for labor with acupressure, dates and birth ball exercises. And from week 38 with reflexology. We explain everything in these 2 videos: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aqaZysSuoNrOqrw.html and kzread.info/dash/bejne/h5umxLGcZMbLkrw.html (birth ball exercises). From week 39, we continue with nipple stimulation. And then if that does not work either, we would try Castor oil (as a last resort and if approved by the doctor). We really hope this information helps you! 😊 We wish you GOOD LUCK and ALL THE BEST for you and your baby! ❤️

    I noticed my cervix feels much different than I’m used to, it feels like it is facing toward the front of my vagina and feels somewhat soft with a lot of pressure right behind it. I was at the doctor yesterday for spotting and she said it was starting to turn outward a little which is causing me to bleed. What does all this mean? Are these signs my labour may be near? I am 34 weeks.

  • @CareAboutLittleOnes

    @CareAboutLittleOnes

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi there Whitney 😊, what you experience are not necessarily signs that labor is near. However, it does seem that your body is preparing for labor. First of all, your cervix is getting soft, which is a requirement for it to be able to thin out and dilate later on. Moreover, during your pregnancy, your cervix is in a posterior position. However, at the end of your pregnancy, it will move forward which is basically exactly what you describe: it will point toward the vagina. And that too is one step that your body has to take in preparation for labor. Most women experience these signs sometime from week 37 onwards. However, sometimes, it happens earlier. But whether or not this means that you will go into labor soon, is something that is unclear. It very much depends on your body. In most cases, labor is still not going to start before week 37 or later because there are also other steps that your body takes. However, in very rare cases, a woman may go into preterm labor. Again, whether or not this will happen in your case is something that is unknown. However, it's good that you are in touch with your doctor and it's important to observe what happens next. We recommend keeping in touch with your doctor, particularly, if you experience more than 5 contractions within one hour or if you suffer from abdominal pain. Because this COULD mean that you go into preterm labor. But this is just a precautionary measure. As we said, sometimes, a woman can experience all these things and still not go into labor before her due date... We hope this helps! We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

  • @CareAboutLittleOnes

    @CareAboutLittleOnes

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@shakeenida Hi there! 😊 Don't worry! The high position of your cervix will change together with the position of your cervix. As long as it is high, it is normally posterior (pointing towards your back). And then once it is anterior, it will also be lower. Therefore, we would apply the usual tools, like acupressure and birth ball exercises to change it. Regarding effacement: effacement often happens together with dilation. Therefore, the tools to speed up dilation, can also help with the effacement... We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby! ❤️

    Hi there! 😊 It depends a bit! Are there medical reasons why the C-section should take place in week 37? If not, it's normally better to give your baby a bit more time for baby's development. But please don't get us wrong here: it IS possible to have a delivery in week 37. However, there are organs (particularly the lungs) which would benefit from staying in there a little bit longer... That said, we strongly recommend consulting with your provider! Only your provider knows your particular pregnancy case and only they can suggest an "optimal" date for a C-section (if something like that exists at all...) based on your case... Hi there 😊, that's a very difficult question to answer. The problem is that some babies just don't fit through a pelvis. This can be the case when a baby is really big, but the woman's pelvis is very narrow. In such cases, a C-section is the only way for the baby to get out. That said, if you have doubt that a C-section is indeed needed, then all you can do is get a second opinion from another doctor. If they too tell you that your pelvis is too narrow, then a C-section may indeed be the better option. But if they tell you it is not too narrow, well, then it's up to you to make a decision if you want to try a natural delivery... Unfortunately, that's all we can tell you! We still hope this helps you! ❤️ We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby! ❤️
