What to do when contractions suddenly stop? 8 reasons why labor can slow down & how to restart labor

One of the biggest fears of women is that contractions suddenly stop although labor is already established because this can cause labor to stall. Actually, contractions which stop are only just ONE of MANY reasons why labor can stall. A stalled labor means that either your dilation does not progress, or your baby does not descent in your pelvis as expected.
So, in this video, Nathalie Kaufmann, Pregnancy & Birth Consultant and TCM Therapist, and Mathias Ritter, Researcher and Science Geek, discuss the 8 reasons why labor can stall. Moreover, they explain in detail what you need to do when your labor does stall, how to get labor restarted and, in particular, how to restart contractions when they stop. In fact, most of the times, labor can be restarted with the help of their “2 step strategy to restart labor”, given that you have successfully eliminated the reason why your labor stalled in the first place.
Finally, since mobility is one of the most important factors to restart labor, they also explain the so-called “Roll-over strategy” from Penny Simkin, which allows you to keep moving even when you are confined to bed (for example in case of an epidural).

I'm autistic. I give birth almost in silence. I think when I was little I was told off or smacked for 'overreacting' when I was in pain. So now, since I was about 2 or 3, I've been unable to express that I'm in extreme pain. I will go inside of myself, focus on a small light or colour somewhere and completely dissociate. I will appear to be very controlled but I'm not, I've shut down because I can't react. Midwives don't realise that the more I shut down the closer I am to delivering. I've almost given birth on the way from the ward to delivery suite several times. I can hear them speaking to me, I just can't look at them and it feels like if I respond, I'll lose all control of what I'm doing and I just can't talk whether I want to or not. So I write this down on a sheet and put it on the front of my notes and give it to them when I arrive for induction.

Thanks so much for sharing this with us! 😊 Just that you know: you ARE allowed to be as loud as you want to be during the delivery of your baby! Don't hold back! This time, there will be no one to smack you or tell you off when you do! Try it! 😊

@CareAboutLittleOnes I just can't. I would never be able to, it has to be something I just accept. I can tell you every single time I made a noise during labour. Those stayed with me more than any of the pain. I can't bear to hear my voice during pain. I said to my husband I hope I never get impaled on something because I'm just gonna hang out there until someone happens to come by 🤣

Hi there 😊, poor you! ❤️ But please don't be discouraged just yet!! Very often, second time moms don't see any signs of labor at all. And then all of a sudden, they go into labor and everything happens very quickly. So, please, don't give up! That said, other women in similar situations have successfully applied one or several of the following tools to go into labor: 1. Nipple stimulation (just keep in mind that it may not be done with a few minutes per day only) 2. Reflexology 3. Acupuncture (this can work particularly well if your stress levels are really high; and please note: it has to be acupuncture; acupressure would most probably not help in your case) 4. Exercises on a birthing ball Of course, there is also Castor oil. However, personally, we always treat Castor oil as last resort simply because of the side effects. Also, you can never be sure if it is going to work... Still, it CAN be super effective for labor induction if your doctor approves. We talk more about these tools and also how to apply them in these 2 videos: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aqaZysSuoNrOqrw.html (reflexology, nipple stimulation) kzread.info/dash/bejne/h5umxLGcZMbLkrw.html (birth ball exercises) We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for the upcoming birth and that things go much faster for you from here on onwards! ❤️

Hi there 😊, please note that on average, a pregnancy lasts between 38 and 42 weeks. Everything within that range is considered "normal". So, it could be that your baby just needs a bit longer in there.... 😊 That said, there ARE things which have helped other women in similar situations: 1. Nipple stimulation (just keep in mind that it may not be done with a few minutes per day) 2. Reflexology (same as nipple stimulation: it may not be done with a few minutes per day only) 3. Still, it CAN be super effective for labor induction. We know, it's not easy. But please try not to put too much pressure on yourself because this would just cause a lot of stress! And stress COULD prevent you from going into labor. So please, try to find ways to relax (meditation, yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, a back massage - whatever you find most relaxing!) We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for the upcoming birth, for you and your baby!! ❤️

I can’t believe I’m having prodromal labor or stop an go labor again! These contractions hurt an the pain above around the cervix was unbelievable. My doctor said I am now paper thin an when the pains come back go to the hospital that I’m only 2 cm dilated l, but it will go fast because she could feel his head, and he’s my 4th baby. He’s measuring small at the last ultrasound 5 pounds at 36 weeks but really I was 37 they put me a week back but I know certain on my last menstrual cycle ovulation and when the deed occurred so I know the window an the implantation bleeding all has me 8 days ahead, however the viability scan somehow stuck. My baby always measured ahead 8-9 days I’ve had a ton of scans because I’m over 35 and the baby has bi lateral club feet. I just don’t want to go to the hospital sn be sent home but I feel because he’s small my body’s not continuing labor because when he is a little bit to the side or moved slightly the pressure change on the cervix is just enough to stop the progression. I’ve always had this but never with a baby that’s small or over 35, my kids are all spaced out 😆 this is my last little miracle an I just want to avoid the cascade of interventions and the being sent home from the hospital. Since he’s measuring small an I’m only 37 weeks 3 days based on the original scan at 6 weeks(so called viability) I know the hospital won’t let me stay an have my water broke an with every labor I didn’t progress past 6 until my water broke then I went from 6 to baby in 3 hours or less, I am trying everything to keep this labor going everything thank you so much for all your helpful information and ideas ❤️🙏

Hi there 😊, thanks so much for sharing your case with us! It's very interesting to read how you experience your fourth pregnancy! 😊 It's difficult to come up with good advice though because of the uncertainty involved in regards to the EDD. We can only tell you this much: the most reliable EDD is produced by an ultrasound exam done in or before week 12. Changing the EDD later is not that simple, even when it's based on another ultrasound exam. That's because some babies are just smaller compared to others. But that does not necessarily mean that there are complications... Therefore, we would NORMALLY go with the EDD from the 6 weeks scan... As for your labor: from experience, we can tell you that - if the body has gone through at least one pregnancy and delivery already - things normally go much easier. Of course, it also depends on baby's position and other factors. However, we are normally quite relaxed when it comes to subsequent deliveries. 😊 Your body knows what it is doing. So, we really wish you with all of our heart that you will have the delivery you hope for and that you can hold that sweet little baby in your arms when it's the right time to do so... We wish you ALL THE BEST for the upcoming birth, for you and your baby!! ❤️

Hi there! 😊 In THEORY, it is possible to have a normal delivery even in that case. However, not every doctor is willing to let you try a vaginal delivery. That's often the case when the hospital is not equipped for an emergency C-section in case you need one. Therefore, all you can do is talk with your doctor and see what they think about it! @@MsSabreena28 Ah okay, thanks for letting us know! 😊 There are several risks involved here, although it very much depends on the severity of GD. Basically, the risk is that your baby can grow much larger than usual, which can increase the likelihood of an induction or a C-section. But again, it depends on how severe the case is. Also, women with GD may develop polyhydramnios which means that they have too much amniotic fluid. This can cause a preterm labor as well as complications during labor (particularly regarding the cord). It can also cause high blood pressure (if severe: pre-eclampsia) which can cause all kinds of complications during labor. These are the most important problems of GD... But please remember: it really depends on the severity of the case. There are many women with GD who have absolutely no problems.... We really hope this helps! Hi there 😊, we totally understand that it is difficult to make decisions at this stage. However, if your concern is the quality of your placenta, then we can tell you that NORMALLY your placenta should not have any problems to nurture your baby at this stage - even if you go over your due date. Moreover, we don't know why you say "only" 1cm dilated. For some reason, women are obsessed with their pre-labor dilation. 😅 However, we can assure you that your contractions will take care of your dilation. You really don't need to worry about that! So, if you are having mild contractions and are ALREADY 1cm dilated, then you can see that your body is preparing for labor. So, maybe it really only just needs that last push 😊? Hi there 😊, so far, we have never had a case when a woman was unable to empty her bladder due to her baby. So, we are not even sure what to tell you. What IS very typical though is that when a baby is very deep in the pelvis, that baby puts so much pressure on the bladder that you constantly feel the urge to empty your bladder - except that you can't - because it is empty... So the question is: is the problem really that you cannot empty your bladder? Or is it just that urge that you constantly feel?

Hi there! 😊 Unfortunately, it is impossible for us to tell you if you can try Castor oil or not. 😬 Only your doctor can tell you that. All WE can tell you is that we are not aware of any scientific studies which have found that Castor oil is not safe (which applies to both, mother AND baby). The "only" adverse effects of Castor oil that were reported are severe vomiting and diarrhea in women. According to studies this happens in about 7% of all cases. That said, we know many women who tried Castor oil in order to avoid a medical induction. And it mostly worked for women at later stages of their pregnancy (f.e. it does no tend to work so well for women in week 37; however, we have seen many women go into labor from Castor oil when they were 40+ weeks particularly when their Bishop score is high). But of course, this does not mean that it will work for you... It depends on how ready your body is for labor... By the way: if you like, calculate your Bishop score. It can give you ROUGH idea if labor induction will work or not (but again, no guarantees, even with a high score)... We explain how to calculate it in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gGFqpZt8ZpXVl6w.html. And please don't forget to ask for the approval of your doctor! We are very sorry that we cannot be a better help here... 🙁 We wish you ALL THE BEST for the upcoming birth, for you and your baby! ❤️

And also if a women is suffering with depression or anxiety just before from her pregnancy then can it also cause the labour to slow down?

  • @CareAboutLittleOnes

    @CareAboutLittleOnes

    2 жыл бұрын

Hi again 😊, it depends a bit in how far her depression and anxiety have an impact on her stress levels and her labor hormones during labor. For example, if a woman is very stressed during labor, then she might adopt a very tense posture (f.e. clenching her teeth and moving her shoulder blades together). In such a tense posture, labor can often be slower because it's not the optimal posture for the baby to descend. If, on the other hand, it affects her labor hormones than it could slow down labor too because stress hormones can shut down labor. However, these things don't NECESSARILY happen... We have met many women who suffered from a mild or even severe depression at the time of their labor. But they still had a super fast labor. In other words, you never know how these things impact your labor in your own case... We hope this helps! 😊 Again, ALL THE BEST for you and your baby! ❤️

I keep hearing that staying calm helps go into labor yet I’ve heard women say a stressful situation put them in labor. I’m so tired of the back and forth answers I don’t even know what to believe, my doctor sucks in 40 weeks, my joints hurt and this is frustrating I try everything nothing works. Ugggg I understand he can come at 41 or 42 but some babies don’t and you still have to be induced.

Hi there 😊, yes, you are absolutely right! Under certain circumstances, stress could also induce labor. (Hey, no one said a pregnancy is gonna be easy right? 😅) We talk about that in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/o6eYs8yff9q1mdo.html. In that video, we also explain what KIND of stress could induce labor. We know, it's so easy to say: "Relax" when you are 40 weeks pregnant with that big rock in front of you. You are tired, you are exhausted. You want your body back. Difficult to stay positive under such circumstances, right? However, try to see it from this point of view: your worries will not help with the start of labor. Frustration is the kind of stress that will make it more difficult for your body to produce labor hormones. So, instead of being worried, trust that your body knows what it is doing! Apparently, you have done everything in your power to support your body. Now, it's up to your body to do the rest. You WILL go into labor. It's just a matter of time. On average, a pregnancy lasts between 38 and 42 weeks. So right now, there is no reason to worry.... ❤️

Hi there 😊, there are two exercises which have helped other women engage their baby: 1. Pelvic rocking on a birth ball which we show you at the end of this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/imensbGbob2uorw.html 2. Deep squats But it's important to confirm first, that your baby is facing your back (is this what you meant when you said: "the head is facing downside itself"?) We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby! ❤️

@@akshatauppin7849 Ah okay, we see! Well in that case, it would be best to have a confirmation first that your baby is facing your back, before trying to engage baby.... simply because it's the optimal position to give birth.... 😊

At my last checkup a week ago (37+5) my doctor said that my baby is in the perfect position for a natural delivery (so dropped in the pelvis and facing my back I guess). I was wondering if, once the baby is in the right position, it can change into a wrong position again (like facing my front or even move upwards)?Or does the baby stay in the position?

  • @CareAboutLittleOnes

Hi there! 😊 If your baby is head down, facing your back AND is engaged, then you really should not worry about that! 😊 Yes, there is a teeny-tiny risk that your baby may change the position once more. However, again, the chances for this to happen are super small. So, please do not worry about that at all! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby! ❤️

Hi there Akhila 😊, if you have had at least some contractions in the past, then you can normally intensify those contractions with nipple stimulation. On top of that you can also support the whole process with acupressure and reflexology.
