How Dads can support their Partner during Labor and Birth - Birth Education for Dads

How can you as a birth partner support your partner during labor and birth? In this video, Nathalie Kaufmann, Pregnancy and Birth Consultant and TCM Therapist, and Mathias Ritter, Researcher and Science Geek, give you the answer!
Actually, today, it’s only gonna be Mathias because this video is supposed to be birth education for dads from a guy for guys.
First, Mathias explains in detail why (normally) there is plenty of time between the moment when labor starts and the moment when your partner delivers your baby. In particular, he explains why you normally have more than enough time to take your partner to the hospital, particularly, if your partner gives birth to her first baby.
Next, he discusses the stages of labor & how long each stage normally lasts approximately. Moreover, he also explains why you should not take your partner to the hospital too early & how to avoid being sent home upon arrival at the hospital.
In the next step, Mathias then explains how dads can support their partner during labor and birth. In particular, he discusses the main goal for birth partners during labor - to support the baby descend in the pelvis and birth canal - and why there are three factors that determine how smooth that process is gonna be: baby’s position, your partner’s labor and birth position and her posture.
He then explains how birth partners can help their baby find a good position for labor, by helping the mother find a good labor and birth position and adopt a good posture.
Finally, Mathias explains several comfort measures that allow you to support your partner during labor by helping her manage pain and he shows you how to apply these comfort measures during labor.

A ripe cervix can help her increase her chances of a spontaneous start of labor at the end of her pregnancy.

@@hamailshahzad Hi there! 😘 Unfortunately, it is very unlikely that your baby will turn if your baby is "fixed". Normally, what we try in such cases is help the baby to back out from the pelvis, then turn and then re-engage in the pelvis with the head first. And we do that with exercises. Therefore, we strongly encourage you to get a second opinion by another doctor! Ask someone with a good track record of helping women have a natural birth!

Thank you both so much, I didn't expect you to respond so quickly, but anyway, thank you very much for your reply. I was thinking the same thing. That I should give up these exercises for some time. Please can you tell me what exercises should I do apart from these exercises so that my hemorrhoid problem does not worsen. And another myth about hemorrhoids is found here that people who get hemorrhoids issue do not get natural labor pains. Is this true? The second thing is that doctors in our country do not guide in the way you guys guide. If one does not have normal pains, they ( Doctors) end up using artificial pains or go for c-section. They don't tell us that you have to do some exercise, you have to take a walk, you have to drink water or anything like that. However, what I understand from you is that for now I should just relax and let nature to work. Thank you again 😊

Hi there 😊, first of all: thanks so much for your very lovely feedback! We really very much appreciate it! 😊 And most importantly, CONGRATULATIONS on your sweet little angel from the 2 of us!!! 🥳🥳🥳 "Heaven" - what a lovely name!! ❤️😊 Regarding your sister's case: When it comes to monoamniotic twins, unfortunately, there is nothing that your sister herself can do to minimize the risks. The only thing that she can do is regular monitoring (which is obviously something her doctors have to do). That's because the biggest risk involved is cord entanglement (because they have two separate umbilical cords). And the other major risk is that one baby receives all the nutrients while the second baby receives less of it (because they share the same placenta). But those risks cannot me minimized. All she can do is have their babies regularly monitored. On a positive note: the survival rate of such twins is very high - according to some studies. Therefore, please do not yet assume the worst! Maybe everything is gonna be absolutely fine! We are sorry that we cannot give you any better tips. But there is just nothing she can do.... We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby and ALL THE BEST for your sister and her twins...!! ❤️

Hi❤..... Nathalie and Mathias.. you always provide me with authentic information..This is my first pregnancy Right now my pregnancy is 38 weeks and through out the pregnancy I haven't any back pain or any such issue till now. From the beginning my baby's position which was head down and placental position was posterior. 32 wks my baby's position was posterior but I heard that babies in posterior position are more prone to back labor during delivery. Then following your exercises, I changed my baby's position from posterior to anterior. At 38 weeks, my placenta is anterior lying, showing the baby's head in a down position. I have been exercising regularly since 32 weeks doing yoga and doing perennial massage regularly. Now at 38 weeks I have got external hemorrhoids issue. Should I continue with kegel exercises and frog jump exercises and deep squats or not?...Because it's causing my hemorrhoids to get worse and painfull. And secondly, I am still not having any contractions nor showing symptoms of cervical dilation and baby dropping. Because from the first day of pregnancy till now neither I had any heart burn issue nor any breathing issue. Kindly tell me what should I do... eagerly waiting for your answer...

Hi there 😊, thanks a lot for summarizing your case for us! We are very happy that our content has helped you so far! 😊 Regarding your questions: First of all, please note that not all women feel contractions already in week 38. For many women, this is still too early. Most of them are more likely to feel something by week 39/40/41... The other thing is: please DO NOT worry about your dilation and baby's engagement! None of these are a requirement for you to go into labor or to have a normal delivery. Your contractions will take care of both! And regarding hemorrhoids: we know these exercises make them worse. That is why you could as well stop them. The reason we say this is because if at this point, your baby is head down and faces your back, that's all you need! Your body will take care of the rest - when it's your time! You could still continue those exercises that do not make them worse. The most important thing though is to relax! 😊 Trust that your body knows what it is doing! We are sure everything will be fine! We wish you ALL THE BEST for the upcoming birth, for you and your baby!! ❤️

Hi there 😘, first of all, thanks so much for your lovely feedback 🥰 and sorry for our late reply: we have been travelling... We can totally understand how you feel because we know similar cases! It is very difficult to stay relaxed when you hear these things! What we do in such cases at the clinic is, we focus on softening the cervix. Don't worry about dilation! The softness of the cervix is the only thing to focus on (and baby's position)! At the clinic, we do acupuncture. Acupuncture cannot induce labor. However, it can help greatly to soften the cervix (we see this very often). If you cannot find an acupuncturist in your area, you may try acupressure and reflexology that we show in the pdf that you can download for free (check our video descriptions to find the link). Both is not as strong as acupuncture, but it can still be a big help, particularly that late in a pregnancy. The other thing is eating dates (if you can). It does not help every woman. But lots of them, as we see in studies. And of course nipple stimulation: studies show that when you stimulate your nipples and your cervix is not yet soft, it can help soften it. You can find more information on nipple stimulation in our pdf guide. Moreover, please also help your baby find a good position for labor because the pressure of your baby's head on your cervix will help soften it! There are several ways to do that: Sitting: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fWmp2sirYLywj6g.html Exercises: kzread.info/dash/bejne/h5umxLGcZMbLkrw.html Sleeping: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fmR6xMGBlKXan8o.html Finally, we would also like to add how important it is to relax! But we are totally aware how difficult that is in your situation! Don't give up though! At the end of the day, all that matters is that a healthy mother holds a healthy baby in her arms! This is what we wish you too!! We wish you ALL THE BEST for the upcoming birth, for you and your baby!! ❤️

Hi there 😊, a posterior placenta is normally not a reason why you cannot have a normal delivery. It's the placentas that are too low that worry us... We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

Hello mam and sir, I'm sneha My new born is 2.5 months old, her birth weight is 3.1 kg and now she weighs 4.5kg which is below the expected weight She is active trying to flip but not getting enough sleep Usually she sleeps at 1am and wakes up at 8am (no feeding in between) then after a session of feeding again sleeps till 11 or 11 30 am but after that she won't sleep atleast 30 mins for one stretch.... She wakes up often for 10 or 15 mins.... Is this a big problem? How can i rectify it, please suggest

Hi there Sneha 😊, please note that just because your baby is below average, does not mean that anything is wrong with your baby. The most important thing is that your baby constantly gains weight. So, as long as that's the case, weight-wise, there is normally no reason to worry... 😊 As for sleeping: at 2.5 months, we wouldn't worry too much about baby's sleeping rhythm yet. However, IF you would like to introduce a nap routine, then you can only do that by waking her up in the morning so that she falls asleep earlier in the evening (of course this means that she will also need 2-3 naps during daytime). In other words, a nap routine will also affect nighttime sleep and vice versa... We posted a video on how to introduce a nap routine on our channel. Maybe you find it helpful? We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

Hi there 😊 , we can assure you that we know many cases when women gave birth to babies in normal deliveries despite having a high AFI and a nuchal cord... Of course, not every case is the same. But at least, this is what we can tell you! We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

@@AmyraPatel04 Hi there! ;-) Unfortunately, placenta previa means that your placenta is too low in your uterus. It blocks the "exit" for your baby. Therefore, it is not possible to have a normal delivery with placenta previa ;-(

@@user-cl8ye3ye1m Hi there! 😊 You are most welcome! 😊 Your stitches should dissolve in about 10-14 days. However, it can sometimes take longer to heal (up to 3-4 weeks). You can have sex as soon as you feel like it's not hurting anymore. This can be 10 days. It can be a month. It really depends on yourself and how you are feeling! 😊
