Cabin Life Off Grid Living: Underground Water Tank Update During Sub-Zero Temperatures

This video is an update of my running water here at the cabin with a couple of simple ideas to ensure that the water never freezes up! If you missed the link in the video to the initial video with the installation here it is... • Cabin Life Off Grid Li...

i kept my pond goldfish in a garbage can inside a box ...with a lid..made from 3/4 inch styrofoam ....run a small air pump and a 25 watt oven bulb down between the can and the box...never had an issue

Unfortunately the night I was editing and uploaded this video I had the water line freeze underground. It took near 10 hours of consistent work to thaw the line as I had 32 feet frozen thanks to the unusual weather that has allowed the frost to penetrate further than average! I took some video footage of the thawing process that worked and I have running water again! I have plans to move the water line lower to at least 5 feet below ground surface to avoid this in the future.

Awesome video Dave I have to put a bulb in my septic tank I opened up it up for the service truck to pump it out and she was frozen.

Thanks bud, as you know I had a freeze up and will be putting the water line down 5 feet in the ground to avoid any issues. Be careful with the bulb in the septic as any spark could ignite the methane gases. I've never had any issues here with my septic tank freezing but would consider additional snow to bury the tank and allow more insulation.

Knock wood Dave, hope you don't have any problems. You're lucky you got some snow we don't have much here at all!.....cheers

The snow has melted each snowfall with heavy rain each storm! Ironically the water line froze up underground thanks to the lack in snow and -20 degree nights! I spent a long time thawing the line and already have plans to lower the water line down from 2 feet to at least 5 feet below surface! Cheers

Thanks, as I was editing this video on a night with just temperatures at -3 the line underground had froze... so this Spring I will be digging it up and burying the water line at a depth of 5 feet below ground. This Winter has been a unique one with rain following the snow which has taken away the snow and allowed the -20's to drive the frost lower than normal. I will upload a video showing how I thawed the water line.

All good to know. Its nice when you can do things yourself. Here in B.C. we are getting hammered by winter lol.

I enjoyed my few times in B.C myself, from north central to the south of Vancouver... but seeing the weather patterns change each year seems shocking to many who have not experienced the weather patterns this Winter! I enjoy the snow and cold but not enjoying the snow and cold followed by rain and extreme winds following every snowstorm here out east.

I follow a channel 1PacificRedwood, he is exposing weather manipulation mostly on the west coast (I am in the east kootenays so not on the coast) he is showing right angles on the jet stream and how they (maybe nasa maybe us army?) can change the direction of the jet stream. It is very well done.

If it’s calling for very cool temperatures you can pile some snow on your pump box in a pinch.

Yes the snow has been a great insulator over the pump box to help as well... snow is by far the best insulator during Winter months but this year the snow has been melted each storm and then the temperatures drop to -20. I had a freeze up the night I uploaded this video so the plans in place are to lower the water line down to 5 feet below surface this summer!

How to you get power to your pump box Dave? I assume you couldn’t keep pump in your cabin due to lift issues?

I have a deep cycle battery in the pump box, these pumps aren't designed to pull water so it had to be near the water tank.

I have an extension cord that gives power to the charger and a 25 watt incandescent light bulb for heat during the winter months. I used an abs fitting that serves a couple of purposes... 1-it is a vent to avoid any gas buildup from the battery and 2-easy access for the cords.

No worries, I previously had a 200 liter rain barrel inside that would last me 7 to 10 days a number of years ago. When I have company I notice a difference with additional consumption. I appreciate your input and questioning... I have another recent video with the water here where I needed to improve, as most off-grid solutions require "trial and error" before making it right. Thanks for watching and your comments. 👍
