Cabin Life Off Grid Living: How To Ensure Running Water Year Round

After a winter having freeze ups I decided to improve the existing water system that would ensure running water year round... even during temperatures 30 below. Anyone living off grid knows how much work is involved in carrying water buckets for essential daily use, I decided to eliminate that physical challenge!

    That is going to be so nice! It is not fun when the pipes freeze under ground. I had it happen only once when the my sons were little. Glad you re making videos again. have a blessed night.

    Thank you kindly... I spent hours last winter pushing through 50 feet of 1/2 inch PEX using a bilge pump and bucket with water to recirculate from here inside. It was not fun. Take care!

    It should be all good now! I should have had my GoPro on while excavating to show the digging process. It's difficult operating with one hand! Haha cheers.

    Since you dug such a big ditch, why not lay more and bigger pipes such 4” PVC pipes together with water lines? That would give you geothermal.

    pretty cool, so I'm assuming this could be done for a well also.. a few questions: 1. if using a tank like that... is the water safe to drink? 2. How is the pump activated to get water to the tap? 3. Are you using a water heater also?

  • @DaveWilcoxJrOutdoors

    Yes it can also be used with a well. This type of tank is made of HDPE and is safe for drinking. The RV pump is a demand pump so it automatically turns on and off with the taps opened or closed. I have a propane hot water on demand unit for hot water which is tankless.

    @@DaveWilcoxJrOutdoors yeah, that sounds like a great setup then. So are all the other water lines above board then? How are you dealing with drainage?

  • @DaveWilcoxJrOutdoors

    @@bikeninja956 all the water lines are inside and are running just below the ceiling, I have a ball valve with a T where the main line enters through the floor, if ever needed to drain it's just opening that valve and the other taps at all three locations. All the water drains. I haven't had to though as I have heat 365 days a year when needed. Propane wall mount furnace is set to room temperature when I'm gone.

    @@DaveWilcoxJrOutdoors no, I meant drainage like toilet, sinks etc. grey water end...how does that work? do they not freeze?

  • @DaveWilcoxJrOutdoors

    @DaveWilcoxJrOutdoors

    @@bikeninja956 grey water goes into a 15 gallon below the frost line, all traps are inside, septic goes into a 275 gallon. No issues whatsoever with freezing. As long as your tanks are below the frost line and no traps exposed to freezing temperatures all is good. It's a good idea to check with your local regulations regarding grey water and septic systems.

    Hi Jody, thanks. I have one tank in the ground and I could get 3 months with a full tank... however I can only transport half that volume with my truck, so every 6-8 weeks I will top it up. I have an identical tank I transport to the spring and using a 5 gallon food grade bucket I place a pump in the bucket below the water spout, using a small generator I pump it into the tank that's in my truck. I then gravity feed it into the tank that's underground.

    Thanks for the quick reply ,I could not find water at our off grid cabin so I was thinking about doing the same install that you got done except i might use 2 tanks. hoping that it will last the winter . and a cellar before we move in

    That should be sufficient, as long as you continue to be conservative... ie short showers, turning the water off while brushing teeth, etc. Depending on how many people are in your home as well. 👍
