Running Water For Our Off Grid Cabin | Kitchen Sink

Running Water For Our Off Grid Cabin | Kitchen Sink - we plumb water to our kitchen sink. After we finish the plumbing then I de-winterize our water system, explain the holding tank, the RV pump and series of valves that allow it to be winterized quickly. This is a pretty easy and cheap system for a camp or cabin that lets you get by without an expensive well.

Good morning Mike, Another great video. I've installed a couple outside showers and have had pipes crack over the winter even when I drained it. I found that a low point spigot or boiler drain elbows work flawlessly, and I leave those drains/valves open. Also, a three-way switch for the water pump under the building will make opening and closing your cabin much easier if you are alone. Thanks for sharing. Enjoy your time at the cabin. Stay safe and healthy. Mike Robbins

That's a good idea, I can see myself having issues there in the future. Probably will be re-doing that shower at some point. 3 way switch would have been clutch I wish I did that. Might be able to get a traveller wire back through to put one after the fact.

Great job Mike. I was taught when soldering a joint is to have the torch flame on the opposite side of the solder and the heat and flux will pull the solder to the heat point. If the solder point isn't hot enough nothing will happen. Great job, I like your inside/ outside wire brush cleaner for copper.

Really nice! I live in a semi-rural house where the only "grid" connections are power and Internet, so it's interesting to see what a full off-grid setup is like. The major difference is that I have a heated basement for the expansion tank and other equipment so there's no winterization.

Not a plumber here but I've installed my fair share of sink "baskets" - you almost _can't_ use too much plumber's putty - at least about double the small snake you've used would be where I'd generally start - sure you'll have a bit to clean up after you've gotten the bottom tightened down but that just goes back in your container. Few other plumbing tips buddy. If you use the brush you can always clean ur solder joints with flux, makes for a much cleaner joint everytime. Remember to always wipe the flux away with a rag or cool cloth. Also, tape your open pipe end whenever going through floors or penetrations that can introduce debris into your lines. You don't want a piece of debris gaining access into the plumbing lines. Cabin looks gorgeous bud, can't wait to see you finish it.

Use tinning flux for copper to brass. It gives you a wider window between the brass getting hot enough to draw the solder and the point when the flux burns.

Hey man how are you doing. I've been watching your channel for over a week now and I am loving it. I like the personal touch you are putting into your cabin build. With that said I would suggest that you put a three way switch for the pump under the house to better enable you to winterize the water pump without having to go back into the house to switch it on. As also try to catch the clean water when you are draining the lines. Keep on doing things your way as this is what make what you do unique. I love your channel so far and I'm looking forward to seeing more of your video adventures in the future.

Yep, invariably we forget one valve and the basement in our cabin gets a bath. That's why we prefer two people to de-winterize, so that one can watch everything "just in case". Love your videos. Plumbing has not been our best skill-set.

Good job. You are doing a great job. Copper is nice but I will never do a new install except with PEX pipe ever again. On numerous repairs after the valves have been on for twenty years and they are corroded and you have to replace them getting them off the copper pipe can be tricky. I only use 1/4 turn cut off valves. So many times the the other types of valves are so stiff that you cant turn them off without breaking them. Sucks when you just need to replace a faucet but end up having to replace everything past the stub out. Start using Torx tip screws. I switched to them a couple of years ago. I have not stripped a screw head since.

I love Pex, only place I don't like it is for stub outs, hate the way they have a tendency to move around over time. Same here on the cut off valves, other ones go bad too fast.

Exciting times!

Omigosh, absolutely! We're in the process of refining our wants and needs, how that looks in a land/home setting, and whether we're really up for everything that comes with it. We're shifting and adjusting a lot as we go. And it really is so fun! :} But yeah... what I can dream of is often more fun than reality, so I measure what I think I'm up for against the ruler of what you've gone through, then subtract about 87%, and there we have my capacity. lol I think 15 years ago would be different, but my health has limitations my ambition does not.

Excellent! I always hate trying to get under the sink to tighten things, its cramped and you have wriggle around to get to anything (especially with other things in there like a disposal) ----- the connections should be put on longer fixtures/pipe extensions (that reach to bottom of the sink basin so you can clearly see and reach the connections) so you dont have to go into such tight spaces

  • @50Acres

There is a down and dirty septic tank setup that uses a plastic 55 gallon barrel mostly in the ground on its side with some holes in it to let extra fluids out as the main mass gives solids time to biodegrade before they leave with the liquids or form a sludge on the bottom. With the water off for the winter normally you don't even need to worry about freezing up. Secondary power switch in the crawlspace for when you are flushing/winterizing.

Its weird but I'm actually really looking forward to making my greywater system and septic system. I geek out on that stuff.

  • @TheUserid82

    @TheUserid82

@@50Acres You could go with a real septic system but with the rocky ground there you would need a hydraulic hammer to insure you could get it in with the proper slope and might even need to bring in a blaster if you run into hard rock that expanding agent cant crack.

You have set up a nice system. One possible suggestion to make the winterization a little easier, could you wire a 3 way switch into your pump so that you have a switch down at the pump to turn it on and off and you can save a couple of steps of having to go back up into the cabin? Just a thought. My dad and I set up his RV for a similar way you are doing it and we could winterize in short order. Love your videos keep posting !!!

Oh yea that is a great Idea, I need to think through if I can get the wires back up to that outlet box or not. I think I ran it in smurf cable so that should be do-able.

A minor point: if you touch the solder to the copper on the side opposite to the flame, the solder will wick right around towards the hottest point. You'll see a fine seam of solder where the two surfaces meet. This is the surest guarantee of a perfect job.

Exceedingly well done with all your endeavours. Still think you could save yourself a lot of extra work 'winterizing' by a one off effort of thoroughly insulating all external pipework.

I have quite a few, but compensate by having a relatively small structure, lots of ceiling insulation and an above average wall insulation for my climate zone. Staying cool in the summer is much harder than staying warm in winter here.
