Thieves discovered my grandpa's woodshed in the forest and stole most of his firewood. This was a devastating blow to my grandfather (who is in his 90s), especially since he used the firewood to heat his home and provide for his family. It doesn't seem fair, that a thief can take in 1 hour what an honest hard-working man took 1 year to work for. Well today my dad and I put a stop to it.
My dad and I have been on a journey to build our own log cabin. This series of videos is a 'behind-the-scenes' look of our bigger "Log Cabin on a Budget" series:

The Outsider thus happen to us, l went to the HOSPITAL to see my husband and while l was gone someone back a truck up to our wood and took cords of wood .the police would not do a thing about it even tho the snow tracks led to a neighbors, them knowing we were disabled and heated our house with it . so chances are you know them. Yes we had paid to have the wood split. What a shame.

When I was a kid, 1950s, we solved the problem this way. We drilled some 1-inch holes, 6-inches long, in some stove logs. Put 4 or 5 tablespoons of xxblack powder in a few, a few cotton balls and plugged the hole up. In 3 days, someone stole a half cord of wood during the day. That night, we found out who the thief was. Someone needed a new 500 dollar stove and about a thousand dollars in roof repairs. The whole neighborhood was thankful.

I have faith that God cares more than anyone, because he says so in his book & he proves it. But when men fail to care, it does kind of break your heart. We all need a little kindness. My grandfather used to keep firewood stacked on the side of his house. Where he lived didn't have fences separating lots, but the homes were all built on doubles so there was always an empty lot between houses. After the house next to him sold, the new owner decided to subdivide and sell the empty lot. Some Chinese investor swooped in and built a multi-family rental home right on the edge of my grandfather's property line. Where the morning sun used to shine through his living room window was now an ugly two story tall stucko-wall box. The renters would stay up late drinking around their fire ring and every morning he would find firewood had been stolen. My grandfather tried confronting the renters, but the problem would always start up again. So, my grandfather moved his firewood to the front of his property. Still he'd find firewood missing. They would walk right across his front lawn and take it in the night. My Dad and I helped helped build him a wood shed on the far edge of his property so he could lock up his firewood. We also put up a split rail fence and motion activated flood lights around his property. One night the renters built a huge bonfire in the fire ring and set their awning on fire. The fire quickly spread through the rental and my grandfather was terrified he might lose his home too. Luckily, the fire department came in time to put out the fire with only minimal exterior damage to my grandfather's home. Nobody was hurt, but the rental was so burned out, it had to be bulldozed to the ground. The property owner couldn't be contacted and it appeared he simply abandoned it. So when the lot went up for auction my grandfather ended up buying it with help of my Dad and his brother. We moved the woodshed over to that side of the property, but my grandfather has no intention on building anything on that lot. He values his view, space, and privacy more.

@John Tratselas. I agree they call them that here in the UK too. To think that they stole from a 90 year old man because they were too lazy or just opportunistic scum. It was a progression crime just to see if they could get away with it when they took small amounts each time their confidence grew, then came with the truck. I hope karma pays them back ten fold, sorry if that is unkind of me to say. But out there in the middle of nowhere were a warm fire can save your life, so stealing someone else's firewood is worse than stealing the deer. You can go without meat for a while but not heat when the temperature get to -40.

If you are using 8 cord a winter you either need 1. A new stove. 2. Better wood! 3. Smaller house or 4. Better insulation. (May I suggest a Blaze King or Lodi Stove and a heat generated fan). I lived 20+ years in a 1,200 sq ft home with no backup heat and used 5 cord only one winter when we got 22' of snow. 4 cord would put me through for the winter, except for that year. I had a Blaze King Stove.

If you have a shed to put it in. I always took July to get my rounds in and chopped and stacked by the 1st of Aug. I only burnt red fur, cedar for kindling and dried birch for banking. 4 to 5 cord a year.

I own an 80 acre farm but I don't live on it. Several years ago I went out to check on it and saw tire tracks leading into the forested area in the back of the farm. As I walked back and the ground got softer I could see there were a double set of tracks like what small dump trucks leave. I came upon a clearing and there were three large freshly cut stumps and skid steer loader tracks and LOTS of chainsaw saw dust! After looking the area over, I called the next door neighbor and asked him if he had seen anything. He said the previous Sunday two guys in a white Ford dump truck towing a trailer with a skid steer loader on it had driven back to my woods and about an hour later came back up the driveway. When they saw my neighbor out in the yard looking at them they waved at him and drove north. He figured I knew them since they had a dump truck and a skid steer loader, but I did not. He was amazed at the brashness of these criminals. So was I. I sunk two large fence posts one on each side of the driveway and put a chain with a padlock on it. I've not had any problems since.

It makes me sad to see people steal from someone regardless of the circumstance, but especially from someone trying to provide for themselves and/or their family, and especially from someone who is elderly who it takes much more effort to do so. But, it makes my heart extremely glad to see others (in this case, a son and a grandson) step up and fill a need where they see fit. Good on ya for helping out family and passing on this example to others who may see it and want to do the same.

Our family had this same issue, a wood covering of 100 cord about a mile from any road way on our land was being pilfered, 3-5 cord per year. We installed a sign and a box and prices for anyone who needed the wood and was taking it, to pay for it there with a check, mail to our address or call 1 of our 3 phone numbers we had on the sign. The next September we had 1 check in the box,for 3 cord and a cashiers check was mailed to us for 9 cord from previous years, and a thank you note. Turns out in the end we only lost 7 total cord vs. The 25 we were originally down, just by putting up a good communication. And since the sign only lost 3 cord in the last 7 years total.

I still go out every year and cut firewood because I enjoy it plus it heats my home . My kids tell me I'm to old but they just don't understand . A thief in my book would be entitled to a block of wood alongside the head . The bonus is my grandkids love to come in the bush and watch and help . Many times they've seen a stack of cut wood and asked why not just take that and I tell them because someone worked hard putting it there for themselves and if I take it then they have got to work twice which would not be fair .

It's good to see that your family is able to support your grandfather and that he has other people in the area that can help him.

I'm extremely grateful the weather hasn't been as bad as usual this winter because a thief stole all my firewood in the cover of darkness 6 months ago . Unfortunately I wasn't able to find out who stole it and couldn't afford to buy more wood so I have no back up heat this year.I'm happy to see you were able to install a good security camera so the thieves can't steal your grandfathers firewood anymore!

I don't understand why ppl steal from others...don't they have a heart and conscience?! Don't they think about how that person would feel?! Thanks for sharing 😊 Be careful if they steal they might hurt you as well.

I had problems with trespassers on my property several years ago. I had signs made that said, " PRIVATE PROPERTY KEEP OUT, VIOLATORS MAY BE MET WITH DEADLY FORCE " Apparently the last part of my signs did the trick. No one has been on my property for the past 3 years.

I know a guy that hung signs up that read, African lion trainer. He did train leopards but he also had a weather proof speaker horn that played lion roaring sounds whenever he wasn't home. He lived on 250 acres of land and had ATV's constantly crossing until that. Then no signs of nothing at all for 8 years. So it must have had the affect planned., lol:-)

I was disappointed too. and for the same reason. I am not about to buy or recommend the system unless I see clear and dramatic results. especially since it was supposedly an interesting video instead of a long commercial.

Truly sorry to hear that your Grandfather was a victim of firewood thieves. I have been a victim of that as well ...though I caught my thieves. I thank you for sharing this video with us ..that and the simple security system. I have sent a request for more info on that. Hope you catch those responsible.

I don't leave a comment often but have to say this really pissed me off. Sorry but it did . From what I can tell your dad raised you with good morals and you obviously LOVE you grand dad .... I lost my dad 3 years ago at the age of 93 . He would have been mad as hell . He would have sent me and my brother out looking for them . He was not a peaceful man but he was fair . Hope you found them buggers and dealt with them one way or another. Keep up the good work Young man .... Love the show

Thieves stealing from anyone is bad enough, but from an old man that is just nuts. I'm glad you guys helped him out and set-up the Simplisafe for him. We have the system and it's a great piece of mind at night and when we are not home. Great video and I hope you guys or the police catch the thieves!

We've been wood burners our entire lives....interior woodstoves and outdoor wood boiler for whole house. Burn between 12 and 16 cord a year. Since 2 sons have moved on I've been sole provider of keeping woodsheds full. I appreciate your grandpa and both of you! For those who don't get it....oh well. But for those of us that do, well, yea. Thank you for these videos!
