Cabin Life Off Grid Living: Solar Energy Upgrade

A few folks have been asking for an update with my solar system, here is the latest with my system. I will be sharing more detailed information with this current set up in the future. Incorporating a system that is large enough at the beginning is a must, or that has the capability of adding on in the future.

Nice upgrade! Your advice on solar is right on. Looking forward to seeing the mill too. We have a Woodmizer mill. Built a lot of homes with it since 92.

When do you start your generator? Do you go by voltage or by percentage? So if you go by voltage whats your number to start?

Hi there, on a 24 volt system, it really depends on how many amps are being used at that time. Generally with a lighter load, I usually start the generator once the voltage is at 24.4 or 55%.

So a quick question........you used your old solar system for the freezer, and the new one for everything else? Wouldn't the new system run it all? Don't worry I still get asked all the time why I don't run my propane fridge 6 months of the year........its Canada, all around us. Cheers Dave

I utilized the older system to take that additional load off since it was already there. The new system could run it all but during the summer months and warmer ambient temperature, this made sense. Cheers. 👍
