Nothing like cutting firewood. My father and I cut wood. I started when I was 14 and I’m 60 now. Dad worked in the woods until he was 86. We cut the softwood for pulp and logs. We have ample maple and birch for firewood but you have to use what you have. Great video.
Really enjoy your videos. Thank you for sharing 🙏🏾

Thanks Kirk, it sure was one of many great lunches while harvesting!
Love the lifestyle.
Thanks for posting Dave - nice job.you're right - pace yourself and work steady not fast, take a break for some thing hot to drink and some chow or some trail mix kind of stuff while ya work out in the cold. had to laugh I just in from finishing stacking my wood for next winter - right on time as the old fellers always said 'have all your wood cut split and stacked under cover by Easter ( I just made it by a day!) Lucky for me I got white birch to mix with the fur and spruce. Good job cutting up the wind-falls and dead standing stuff first even if it is a bit smallish no waste. Thanks again for you're posting.

R. B.L. awesome! I have heard that as well from many of the older folks. You can now relax and have that added peace of mind knowing you have a warm home for another year! It's a great feeling, and the hardwood is a great bonus for the colder nights. I have plenty of dry juniper as well that has a high BTU rate like birch. I'm hopeful that I have two years stock now since this video I was fortunate to cut and haul more that's all stacked. Some years here the snowpack was poor and it was difficult to get to the wood. I appreciate your feedback and hope you will enjoy the long weekend with a little time to relax! 👍
Awesome lunch
Beautiful loads of Tamarack. It will keep you warm.
Nice video....hope you have a couple of beers for after the work is done!!

NLGhostWolf thanks Charlie, yes I do like to tidy up the windfalls and take the dead standing trees. We are getting another nasty snowstorm... hopefully you're still enjoying the snow buddy! 👍
Y’all sure like those sausages and beans, don’t get me wrong their easier to carry them bulky foods, nice video. Are those ants still in the wood and do you have a problem them when you bring the wood into a warm cabin .

Thanks Larry, yes we certainly do enjoy the beans and sausages on rare occasion. Some junks of wood will have ants still in them but the majority are absent of any bugs. I generally keep the obvious pieces of wood outside in the freezing cold and put into the wood stove immediately. It's important to do that otherwise the carpenter ants will destroy your cabin or home.
You should do a 2020 wood cutting/cook-up video it would be great to see a new video!

Yeah, I understand, and the wood is dry so it is much lighter,,, The brown slide is what we call locally a “ Labrador style komatic “

Yes it is a Labrador style Komatik. I've been using them all my life. I like the long runners, very easy to haul.
A nice big pile of wood, set for another year.

Thanks, yes, glad to have enough wood for staying warm next year! It has been a warmer winter here with less snow than normal, but the wind has been persistent!
Why do you not cut firewood in warmer weather? Good video,Thank you.

Hi there, I cut during the winter months to access the wood cutting area, as it's not accessible without snow. It's also a little easier to haul, less expensive than other forms of transportation, and safer from the potential with a hot chainsaw and a fire. Thank you for your support.

Haha, thanks... it's still intact. Short distance hauls and taking my time. It's rated for 500 pounds, all good. 👍
I live in NW Ontario and it is just unbelievable the amount of carpenter ants infestation in the bush this year! Never seen anything like it. Even the trees that look healthy that I cut down for firewood I would say 30% are infested. We have a wind storm and tree after tree after tree fall! All of which literally explode cause the core is all but gone cause of the ants! It’s so bad that the tree is eaten out sometimes up to 10-15 feet up from the ground. I have never seen anything like it in 50 years!

Hi Richard, interesting... I too have been nothing the same here on the east coast as well in recent years. I was out in the garden this past summer and it was early for the carpenter ants to show up that forced me inside. Millions of them that claimed their territory. I used to bring in enough firewood to stock up, but now the wood goes directly into the stove. Hopefully it's just a cycle.

Dave Wilcox Jr Outdoors indeed! I hope it is just a cycle, at this rate I won’t have a bush in 20 years.
