C4 Corvette Instrument Panel
Early C4 Corvettes have one of the first digital instrument panel that was truly ahead of it's time. But there were other proto type that didn't make the cut. This is a look at what could have been.

My wife and I took delivery of an '89 C4 last month (shipped it from Kentucky to Phoenix) and I'd been waiting 38 years to get my grubby paws on one and only by the grace of God did it happen (All glory to Him!). I gotta say that back in '84, when I was REALLY into Star Trek, it was the "Buck Rodgers" instrument cluster that totally floated my boat (besides the fact that it was and is one of the most "sexy" cars ever produced IMHO). In choosing our C4, I waffled between the original and the '90's refresh, but when my wife indicated that all the C4's we looked at were "very nice", but none were RED, well that sealed the deal! The 80's nostalgia and the color won out and voilà! A "little red Corvette" with 27K original miles is in our garage and we are enjoying it thoroughly! I valet parked it the other night and the attendant flipped his lid over the digital dash such that he had to video record me starting the car just for the instrument cluster itself. He'd NEVER seen anything like it! Very cool. 😎

Awesome story Jack, thanks so much for sharing. I couldn't be happier for you and your wife. Sounds like a great find. Congratulations.
I love the 84 through 89 C4 Corvettes. So much so thet that is what I'm chosing for my next "fix-up and save it from the crusher" project car. When I was in my early 20's I did a fix-up on an 85' Chrysler Laser and it had a pretty cool digital dash set-up also, and it used to even talk at you. When I first drove the car home the oil pressure sending unit was bad and the car kept periodically saying "warning, low engine oil pressure, engine damage may accure". That was a pretty cool one too...

Talking digital dash is very cool. C4 Corvette is a great choice for your next project car.
The Camaro Z28 and Firebird Trans Am remained analog. The C4 was really high tech for the time. I've owned two 91 ZR1'S and a 96 LT1 Corvette. I like the 96 dash because you could bring up the engine parameters onto the main display from the analog gauges. The C5 Corvette they went back to full analog gauges including the speedometer.

It sounds like the 96 had the best of both worlds. Thanks for the comment

Trans Am GTA had a digital dash too but not nearly as cool.
I absolutely love my digital dash. That is the main reason I chose an 85-89 Model (1988) And I did not know that about the "red zone". I was worried if it dropped I would not see it but thanks to this video I now know it will switch to it. Thank you.

I totally agree it was so cool when I first got in my Vett and its still awesome today. The "red zone" allows you to not worry. Thanks for the comment.

Gm engineers made swapping the dash so DIFFICULT. But it was rewarding swapping the 92 dash to a 96 one LOL

Nice video Michael, I like the digital but only the central part. The tachometer and speedometer I would prefer analog as our brain perception for those are faster. This is why today’s cars (even high end) use analog instead of digital mainly for safety so your eyes take less time looking and go back to the road.

That what makes me want a Corvette. As silly as it sounds. Trickery at it's finest.

Michael very cool! Truly in lighting. I've been told that the 1990 was not interchangeable with 91 through 96. Was it the same with the? 84-89 model years? Those instrument panels kind of seemed Buck Rogers Ish, but I understand your thinking on the read out. They also seemed that there was more to go wrong, not to mention price of repairs. All in all, new ideas are interesting in C-4 design and development THANKS for sharing!

Back in the 80s they had a real WOW! factor. I believe the 84 to the 89 are the same, although the 84 had smaller numbers. Thanks for the comment

1990 had the new dash with the old exterior
Never seen these images before. The first image reminded me of a totally different car interior. It looks to be a copy of the citroen BX dash (european car released in 82) Even the steering wheel is the same!

You maybe right, I'm sure they look at a number of euro cars to get ideas. Thanks for the comment.
Where did you buy the parts to make your hood release

I got the parts from Menards, but any hardware like store would have them.
I don't care for the pwototypes.
