I think it was Norman Jewison who said it best: the show failed because you CANNOT put a talent like that out there weekly. It's too much. A star like Judy needed less exposure, and a weekly show of her was like an aurora borealis in someone's backyard every night. The power can't be appreciated when it's so accessible.

Jack Mauro - There is good insight here. It’s true. It would be exactly the same diminishing if Barbra Streisand were to do a weekly variety show. Yes, people would watch it, but then Streisand would be diminished by sheer exposure. I love your comparison to the aurora borealis. It’s exactly like that. Imagine watching a solar eclipse every day. It would stop being special.

Charlene McClintock She was, and her voice was, tender, humble, powerful, fragil, sweet, mesmerising, and incredible, with a hint of her pain. Her voice filled the auditorium with love. She loved the audience and the audience loved her back like no other performer. I get emotional just thinking about it and it was about fifty four years ago, I think in 1961. She had such an impact on us. NOBODY has ever sung like Judy. At the end, the audience gave her a rousing standing ovation that went on and on and on. I was a twenty one year old, and like most of the audience, I clapped with tears running down my cheeks.

@nandesneto I find myself enjoying Garland much better than I do Streisand, who I haven't really enjoyed since her work in the late 60's and 70's. Garland has an emotional sadness and universal human quality that Streisand never did. You connect with Garlands emotions where as Streisand tends to be cold and remote.

Over The Rainbow is so hopeful, and this one is so empowered. She was such an amazing talent. I'm so glad she's still being remembered. Such a sad, tragic life too. I'm so sad she suffered so much. As far back as the 1930s, Garland had struggled with her self-image, made worse, no doubt, by MGM’s treatment of her. As if that wasn’t bad enough, MGM also forced Garland to diet, despite already being a healthy weight for her 4 foot 11 inch frame. But that wasn’t even the worst studio-enforced rule. The star later claimed that in order to keep up with the hectic work schedules, she was given amphetamines by day and barbiturates to help her sleep at night. This was the start of a battle with drug addiction that would plague the star for the rest of her life. During the recording of the show’s last-ever episode, Garland performed the song “By Myself.” But her deeply emotional rendition of the number led network execs to deem it too dark for broadcast. It was consequently cut and not seen by the public for more than 50 years. The lost footage of Garland’s dark performance resurfaced in 2016. In it, the deep sadness and gritty sense of determination the star clearly felt during the song seeps from her every pore. Rather than being dark, it instead shows the raw emotional power that the Oscar-winner possessed. Judy Garland died in 1969 at the age of just 47 after having taken an accidental overdose of barbiturates.

No one cannot say Judy was better Babs is better BUT Judy had true soul in her voice and when one watches and listens to her you get the feeling that something ethereal is going on! I don't get that with Streisand.

Mark Whitman I tend to agree with you. Barbra Streisand was a great singer but almost too technically and flawlessly perfect in a way that makes you feel almost detached from her. When I see Judy perform on stage, I feel as if she is really drawing me in and that I can utterly connect with her. Like you say, listening to her you feel you're in an ethereal presence and when she sings with that raw emotion and vulnerability, I literally get shivers running down my spine! I too like you never get that with Streisand.

+Mark Whitman It's just not possible to compare two different individuals. In the same way, you cannot compare fingerprints. Tastes are subjective, after all. Suffice it to say Babs and Garland are two giants in the entertainment world, and let go of it. Oh, by the way, I salute the great Astaire for not comparing his lead women in dance, for each dancer brought with her a different set of emotions and technique. Astaire was too much a gentleman to do such a thing. They all were different women. And viva la difference!

I respect what you're saying but the truth is it is human nature to compare singers or dancers. How else would talent competitions get judged? And Mark like me hasn't said anything derogatory at all about Barbra Streisand - we both have acknowledged she is a great singer but it's just we prefer Judy. If other people prefer Barbra and say that they do, fair enough. But with the best will in the world, you can't stop people comparing two artists - rightly or wrongly, it is natural for people to do so. And I'm sure privately Fred Astaire, being the perfectionist that he was, did compare his dance partners.

@roxaneirene This is definitely sung live, no lip synch. The shows were recorded often several weeks ahead of air date. She recorded in front of a live audience. IF there was a minor flub in the lyric and she kept going with the song, the mistake could be fixed after taping by deleting the sound..such as at 3:11-3;13. IF the flub was more noticeable, she would stop song and start over. Show on a tight budget, so preferable to fix the small mistakes vs time/cost of do-over

@mikesterSTLMO It doesn't matter who was technically better or who was a better belter. Both Judy Garland & Barbara Streisand are both a hell of a pair of singers and they are both the best female singers in the world. They both had great voices and what makes them unique are the qualities that they had in their voices and we can compare Judy's voice to Barbra's but at the end of the day you can't say that one is better than the other. They were both SUPERB at what they did in their careers
