I saw her many years ago at the London Palladium, she came on in a tight fitting black dress and immediately got all the men, she walked to the edge of the stage, said 'These shoes are killing me' took them off and had all the women and then gave the most amazing performance that had the whole audience on its feet cheering!

God, it doesn’t matter how many times I watch her slam her hands down with that last “as long as he needs me”, it always gives me chills.

For me it’s “JUUUUUUUST”

Streisand, Piaf, Bassey, Dion, Minelli sing for their audiences and we listen in awe. Garland comes and sits down besides you and holds your hand and sings for you alone. Her gift over all the others was the love she gave when she performed.

The composer/lyricist of this song Lionel Bart said he imagined Judy singing every song he wrote as he was writing them. Looking at this video, I know why. Truly an amazing rendition, vocally and acting-wise. That look upward as the song changes key, her hands hitting down on the trunk at the end, the sheer power of her voice coupled with the power of her emotions--absolutely fantastic. There's never been anyone like her and never will be again. Wish Carnegie Hall had been filmed.

She came, she sang, she conquered.

God, what a magnificent talent - SOUL personified! Her voice is SO RICH here and the amount of feeling is staggering. She paid such a high price for her great talent. I hope wherever she is she knows the joy she still brings to us. A critic once said of her - After awhile, you don't really se or hear her; you simply FEEL her - right on!

Again I repeat: No wonder Frank Sinatra said - "Every time Judy Garland sang she died a little".

It’s the number one comment on her efforts as posted here. The woman had a gift and it was exploited at every age of her too short life. I danced, it’s a different realm, but I get it. I identify with her gift and have reverence for her ability to “meet her match” year after year after year.

I wasn't born until 1955, & Judy died in 1969. But in that short time I cherished each & every of her performances. She was a living legend. Effortless, powerful, emotional, & she really got to me. Her stage presence & charisma were beyond belief. I sure miss her.

I'm numb, I can't move, my voice quivers, like I was nearly in a car wreck, that's the emotional slap I just felt listening to Judy sing this. Over 50 years she reached forward and touched me. No, she grabbed me. She made me hers. I'm shaking in the power of her voice. For a brief few moments she looks into the camera like she's singing to me, telling her story of dedication to her uncaring lover. Yes, Judy, We ALL need you.

Gene Kelly said Judy Garland was the greatest talent of the .20th century. Gene Kelly worked with all of them. I will take his word for it. In my opinion the greatest talent of the 20th century. She could sing, dance, act and everything else. And she had a vulnerability. You could not help but love her.

Genius - Genius - Genius - There isn't any singer today who can deliver a song so simply yet with such power and emotion without having to 'jazz' up the number with riffs and extra words. Judy was one of a kind and her like will never be seen again.

In spite of the drugs and the booze,Judy turned out a body of work unequaled.Her starting young&her acting ability gave her so much to draw from during her concert years.There really is no one that can touch her and there probably never will.

And that's how it's sung.

No one…ever before or since. Moved me to tears.

imaging being in that audience and experiencing THAT? At her peak, the greatest singer ever.

She was actually already quite sick at this point in her life. She was just the ultimate entertainer and could cover it all up and hide her pain to give the most amazing performance.

Powerful performance - emotional and real. No gimmicks. Just raw talent.

Recorded over 50 years ago, and it still tears you apart. Very powerful.

Judy lived in the lyrics and interpreted them so beautifully and always with such deep introspection It appeared as if she wrote every song she sang. A true artist that wore her heart on her sleeve. Her work stands the test of time.R.I.P.

Gosh her voice was magnificent

Just lovely. Absolutely lovely.

Interesting how she starts with the bridge, which alters the emotional arc of the song so she can build smoothly to the big finish. In four minutes Judy takes us on a tour of human emotions. Hers were so close to the surface, they made her personal life difficult at times, but their great variety and accessibility gave her expressive abilities almost unique among singers. If I could bring only one recording to a desert island, it would be her Carnegie Hall album. She is a miracle.

What an incredible display of vocal technique, musicality and personal charisma. I was not alive for Garland and find much of her work is overestimated - but this is a sublime vocal performance. She's in complete control of it. Gorgeous.

That’s a fine compliment, but perhaps the portion of her work you feel is “overestimated” occurred after 1965. For someone who seems eager to critique great voices, I’d challenge you to analyze her massive Decca/MGM 1940s catalogue, her mid-late 1950s/early 1960s Capitol studio work (and Carnegie Hall, which stands on its own). After the 1950s it was nearly impossible to get Garland into a recording studio. Capitol Records even complained about it after ‘Judy at Carnegie Hall’ won 5 Grammys, went double platinum, etc. Judy didn’t like studios anymore, after that. So you ought to “estimate” her work as it was captured in plentiful, notated, controlled environments (mentioned above). Seriously, one of the stupidest statements anyone could make within a context of historicity is that Judy Garland’s “work” (as an entirety) is “overestimated”. Some of her later-in-life squawkings are too highly praised, certainly, but to say that the bulk of her recorded and filmed work, as an entirety, is “overestimated” removes anyone from an objective historical discussion about her contributions.

@@TombCat LOL I am a Garland "nut" and you can see how up in arms her rabid supporters get with such a statement. If you have time or care to listen to her very early as far back as when she was 12! Judy is otherworldly and you have no idea how she can be that good.Then keep discovering her work through the decades at MGM then the 50s and of course 1961 Carnegie Hall live. If you then go late in her life the greatest of her voice diminished but she replaces it with unparalleled stage presence. Maybe she is overestimated because you heard her late in her life. Believe me at her best and peak Judy had no peer.Only Streisand, Piaf Ella can give her a run for her money but DO NOT surpass her

Best performer ever. There never be a replacement or somebody with that level of talent again. I am so grateful I was born at a time when she was performing .

She’s in 1:47 amazing voice here. Nobody could touch her. Her vocal instincts, we’re perfection.

Judy Garland had one of the most amazing & beautiful voices. You can just see how Judy puts her all into her songs, you can see it in her face. This song gives me the chills everytime I hear it. It is sad that Miss Garland had such an emotional & hard life. Her legacy will forever be remembered. One of the best performers of the 20th century. We will never see the likes of her again. I LOVE when she slams her hands down on the podium at the end of the performance! This isn't the only time she's done that, but I just LOVE when she does it!

That gave me chills and made me cry. Just outstanding.

Everything she sings, I swear it's as if she's making up the lyrics on the spot. So genuine and convincing.

This is one of my favorite performances of hers. Makes me emotional every time because of HER rawness.

She truly was an absolute legend. I'm struggling to find the words to describe this performance. I would've loved to meet her to tell her what an impact she has on my life. Something that upsets me very much is the fact that most people I know wouldn't have a clue of who she is or how amazing she is. C'mon people! She’s definitely acting. I see a moment where she finishes a big note, and she has a big twinkle in her eye, very pleased with herself. Then, the next instant, she’s back into the character. Brilliant.

If anyone has never seen her in "A Star Is Born" with James Mason, it's one of the greatest performances ever on film. It will literally rip your heart out your chest. What she goes through as she watches James Mason's character destroy himself is some of the most moving acting ever.

The composer of "Oliver" wrote ever song in the score with her voice in mind. No wonder the show was so well received. Pure artistry.

That is so nice to know. To have Judy as your muse is surely to have Heaven on your side. BTW, The music score to "Oliver" stands out in my mind as one of the very best ever.

Judy was one of a kind. Her voice was as terrific as her life was tragic. As great as she sounds here, does anyone else think that she kind of seems somewhere else in her mind? Not quite there mentally?

My granddad used to work at a Theater in London and he says the most memorable thing of the whole time he worked there was Judy Garland. She came on an hour and a half late, people were complaining and all sorts, she was drunk as hell but she went out on stage and everyone came out saying that it was the most amazing performance they had ever seen. No one could take their eyes off her. If anyone has, or ever had star quality this woman does.

Judy does not act, she FEEls every note and word, with her genuine emotions,passion and pain. What an inspiring, spin CHILLING performance, from a subline DIVA, as always. You're a one off TRUE STAR. Blessings, encore, and BRAVO. x

***** Thank you Drew, and from what I'm learning about her now, you're too right, sadly. However, I watched a documentary made by her daughter, Lorna Luft, last night, and it seems, that Judy and her 3 children had a wonderful close knit life together, and I don't feel it was all doom and gloom. We just don't seem to have true ARTISTS, like her any more though, and anybody is a "star" these days. How fantastic that we have YT now, and can look back on Judy's life, and her huge body of works, and what a legacy she leaves behind her. I've adored learning about her, and what a witty LADY! x

+Catherine Blair Hey Catherine I've waited so long to respond to "Judy does not act, she feels". Obviously we both love Judy so much and my intent is not to argue. However she IS acting while singing this song. I say that with the utmost respect to Judy as a professional performer. Her head movements, eye movements impeccably timed with the words IS a performance. She was not always happy to be on stage, but her unmatched dedication to her job and her unbelievable discipline insured every song was the best she could give to her audience. I read once before going on stage she would say "fuck em, fuck em, fuck em", yet that is not what the world saw. She surely felt music deeply and her interpretations of songs are magic, but she was a performer above all else whether singing or acting, whether she wanted to be on or not. So. Yes her acting skills are on as much display for this televised taping as her singing talent. In fact, although I believe she is the most talented vocalist the world has known, her acting skills exceed even that. In conclusion - Judy Garland, in my opinion, is the greatest entertainment talent the world has has ever seen.

still astounds me how this performance just drips with both passion and vulnerability, even if you didn't know the arc of her too short life. knowing it only accentuates those elements even more.

And, in a few minutes, she owned this song: lock, stock & barrel. She did this *specifically* to own it. Nobody will ever be able to sing it like that again, and she knew it. But that's why she's Judy Garland ... and we're NOT. It's cool that she was/is some sort of gay icon, that the gay community helped preserve her legacy, but so much better that everyone loves her art. She's always belonged to Everyone. One of the few geniuses that can play her voice like a violin, like a real instrument -- infused with more soul than a choir. She rocks. Like Sinatra, Como, Ella, and Dean Martin ... she just rules the roost, baby.

I don’t think there was ever a women that sung with such emotion as the wonderful Miss Garland

This kind of grace, beauty, and deepth simply cannot be found in modern music.

Words cannot describe how truly great Judy Garland was!

A consummate performer: intuitive beyond words, sublime beyond melodies. One of a kind, never to be replicated. This performance is a master class in "becoming" a musical number. Pure emotion filtered through one of the greatest instruments ever.

Well said . Was listening to Eydie Gorme when this came up . Watching Ms. Garland as I listen evokes many emotions , more than any other ever has .

I was born on January 1, 1900. It's hard to believe but it's true. I remember seeing Judy Garland in the 1940's, 1950's, and I was an audience member on her show in the 1960's twice. When she died, I cried for a week. Wherever she is, I want her to know that all of her fans of then and today cherish everything she brought to the movie and music business. It was people like her that made this world peaceful THROUGH THE YEARS.

She was & still to this day the Greatest Singer that has ever been

Her and Whitney Houston are two of the greatest singers to ever stand upon a microphone.

This was the last year at the top of the mountain. After the show was over, she started a slow decline that that she only occasionally could sing over. But here, at her very finest, at the sum of her powers, to me she has no peer. She is able to sear the soul with her infinite talent. I wish, wish, wish CBS had had the brains to renew her show, she might have survived, and stayed at her best for several more years, as well as found financial security, because the worry over the lack of it was scaring her to death, with 2 young children to support. There will never be another like her; 1,000 pounds of talent in a 95 pound frame. God Bless You Judy, and I hope you are happy and at peace.

You are so right. Her show was great; short-sighted management at CBS gave up on her simply because the show didn't hit number one in viewership immediately upon its debut.

Raymond Farrish ...True indeed. But there was more going-on with her show than people today realize (or people who are interested in such matters.). Very complex cock-up by CBS. Judy's weekly show was created to compete specifically with Bonanza, the popular Western serial, Sunday-night program that EVERYONE in America loved, and enjoyed watching after their rough work weeks in suburban, post-war USA. Understandable. Judy's first TV show that was pitted against Bonanza blew the Bonanza out of the water. Beat them hard in ratings. But that was because seeing Judy Garland on TV was an "event" and people gave-up their comfy Bonanza schedule to watch her. But she wasn't a good weekly "battler" with Bonanza. Too completely different ideas and needs of American viewers. Hear a legend pour her heart out in song every Sunday night ... or enjoy the root-em, toot-em fellas at the Ponderosa ranch. Much easier on the working American psyche. At best, what CBS should have done was put Judy's show on another night, and then maybe a few, select times a year pitted her show against Bonanza with extra-extra special concert shows (Sinatra, Dean Martin, maybe Elvis ... who wanted $70,000 to go on Judy's show. They refused.) Or, her handlers should have secured for her a deal wherein she did maybe four "seasonal specials" a year. (Judy at Easter, Judy on the Fourth of July, Judy at Labor Day, Judy at Christmas.) Big production and big money for Judy. A million bucks for each show, and have them every year. It would have become an American fixture, I believe. Her "specials" crushed all the competition. Her weekly program could have been a huge success with a little tweaking by CBS, on another night, but her real power was in special "event-type" programs. Watching a powerful, intense personality like Judy Garland every Sunday night was too much for the casual viewer at the end of their work-week. But the show could still have been easily turned into a ratings success on another night.

I knew Lionel Bart: the composer and more relevantly the lyricist of this extraordinary anthem of self-delusion. It's not a subject often treated in song, but it's an experience with which we all are familiar. By then, in his personal life, he'd lost everything material. all his wealth, on the altar of such delusion. And yet he still smiled. He knew that from it, he had generated a masterpiece, unequalled,. She too knew where it came from, and found that defiant truth. God bless them both for giving us this. Art, unlike wealth, is immortal . Unperishing.

Kept wondering what her body movement would be on the last note. That smack on the trunk is just heart breaking.
