Getting mentally ready for this year’s BWCA trip. Miss your videos - just wanted to say thanks even though you haven’t posted in a while. Your trip videos got me hooked on taking trips to the BWCA when I first found you on KZread in 2017. Been every year since. Also they were motivating for me to watch as I recovered from open heart surgery a year ago to get better so I could take a trip 5 months later. Hope you are doing well!

Mark and Betsy Starkson we base camped on Vista for most of the trip and did ok fishing there. Our trip was the last weekend of September 2017- early October. We had enough walleye to eat every day. Caught some monster smallies and a 34” northern too! We fished on Meed the last day and did pretty well there too. I’d be happy to share fishing spots. Send me an email!

I was planning on bringing some worms in addition to various crankbaits, spinners, and of course jigs + synthetics. I really appreciate the input of some experienced BWCA canoers. Thank you kindly, Li

To what are you referring? We don't cut down/off anything. Sadly, some people do. Many times when you arrive at a site, there is rotted, green, or otherwise unusable wood by the 'pit'. It is against park rules, but I cannot speak on it's legality. Thanks for watching!

I’m considering in buying a GoPro but I’m concerned about the audio recording so when played back you’ll be able to here it. They offer external mic hookups but it sounds like they aren’t needed. Thanks for the reply. It’s helpful.

Honestly, the GoPro audio on the Hero 5 is okay - not great. I think I prefer the iPhone 7 over it - especially for my trips. The battery and memory go a lot further. Consider buying a used iPhone 7 to take along.

@@mstarksoUpperLipOutdoors if you want a real adventure. Drive up to Grand Marais. Head up the Gunflint trail all the way to the end. Go to Voyageur outfitters. Talk with Mike the owner. Rent a Winona Minnesota 3 kevlar canoe and some carbon fiber paddles. Use there tow service to carry you and your canoe across the large part of Saganagon. To Hook Island. Paddle across the boarder into Canada and into Cache Bay. This is Quetico Park. Much less crowded than BWCA. And then ranger station. After there. Paddle to Silver Falls Portage. I have never seen the bottom of those falls. 32ft I think. You are now in Saganagona. I may have the two lake names mixed up. Then paddle to Deadman s portage. It's not bad. The first portage is worse. With steady paddling you can get across deadmans portage by 3:30 Camp on this lake. And fish in the evening and a bit the next morning, early. I have some good spots there. Then paddle Northwest to the outlet. I believe the Melign river. This will lead you to Kinippi Lake. But to get there you will need to traverse 7 portage around waterfalls. I have a few spots in Kinippi. And in one spot you will probably be able to feed an Eagle. It will fallow u to the narrows. Fish for 2 days then head back To the first campsite. The minnesota 3 canoe is a 3 person canoe. And is 20 ft long. But weighs 54 lbs. And is very quiet and fast to paddle. The trick to this trip is to pack light. And be able to do a one trip portage. And it will be difficult to resist the urge to spend a half hour fishing below each falls. We saw a wolf on one of the portages You will need Remote Access Permits, Canpass. And Quetico permits. Let me know if you want more info

TIM Flugaur-Leavitt LOVE the QUETICO! That’s where we cut our teeth. We used to drive up to the north side of the park and put in by the French Lake Ranger Station, paddle down Pickerel, to Russel. We went several times in this area (probably 7-8 trips). This started back in the mid eighties, before anyone had a Kevlar canoe. We actually use the same canoe today. Have you ever been in that area? We haven’t been able to get back up there since ‘07. The hope is to bring our kids up there within in the next 5 years. We may do that same trip next year, or, like you said, get a RAP and come up through the south. Also, working on a Kevlar, probably a III. Then, me and my boys only need one canoe! Thanks for watching and reaching out.

@@mstarksoUpperLipOutdoors the three is fast and goes straight. It can handle waves but it gets a little scary. I also have a Seneca 3 man. Much more initial stability than a 3. In the Seneca. If you have to stand up in front to get a lure out of the tree. No problem. In the 3. Not so much. Buy a used kevlar canoe. We got ours from Paraigus Northwoods store in Ely. Keep cheng all the minnesota outfitters for sales. Especially august and September. Some times you can reserve them months before the end of the season . Then pick them up after the are no longer needed. Some outfitters carry a Canadian brand canoe. Sawyer. They are a deeper canoe. Also get some used carbon fiber paddles. Canoe and paddles will last you the rest of your life. And kevlar is so quiet and light and efficient

Thanks for the info! I do scour the outfitters’ used equipment sales a couple times a year... just makes sense. I’ve also heard that the factory in Winona has some defect sales. Not much info on those, though. I do like the stability. My other canoe, Old Town Penobscot, gets a little squirrelly in the wind and waves, too. It’s been capsized on Sawbill before. In the early ‘90’s, it put my dad and sister in some very cold water and a very serious situation. They haven’t been in a canoe since. I’m always a little nervous in that one. I haven’t used it since our 2012 trip. I’ll have to check out the Seneca line.
