    Man, we've watched all of your videos, and your including the slide show of old pictures at the end of this video about brought me to tears. Our family has books of these same types of pictures. Like 30 years worth, ridiculous. Every year when we plan a trip, we hem and haw, picking out a lake. Thankfully the BWCA is beautiful every year - hope to keep it that way. Your pictures help me remember that it's the people who make each trip so special. It is nice to have walleye to fry, but it seems like you already know that. Thank you for your videos. They're awesome.

    Thanks for watching. You're right, it's the people that we share these moments/traditions with that make it extra special. Ryan and I hope to pay it forward next year - we're going to start introducing them to the wilderness - hopefully it will mean as much to them as it does to us. I hope you get out often enough. I've got footage (rambling, mostly) of Ry and my fondest memories and a story of two of how we were introduced to the BWCA and Quetico. I'm planning on posting it in the coming weeks after we find some old photos from our first few trips. Again, thanks for watching!

    Finally the 2017 version - enjoyed this last night. These two knuckleheads got me through along winter, waiting for my 1st BWCA trip. Leaving in 4 days - can't wait. Did I learn anything from watching these two guys (and friends) on their BWCA adventures? Yes, "Bring more Vodka"! - How is it after all these years they still fall short? I thoroughly enjoy you guys.

    biggest thing ive learned from fishing boundary waters is you gotta troll, you will definitely catch them with bobbers but when you troll with bottom bouncers and a snell its non stop walleyes in the evening. one night we caught our limit, so we had to start culling out 14-15 inch walleye. it was wild.

    That was me yelling "is it open" asshole ;) We did hold spot 1 in case the other wasn't open. You guys called it. My job was to canoe half way and find out from the other guys if it was open before we left the first spot. As soon as we left the first spot, another group grabbed it. Can't take any chances with those Alumacrafts to haul. Hope you guys had as much fun as we did. Sorry for the noise. That's a wrap.

Love you're idea, but I heard you say it's a pain to pack the basket. Also, looks like a larger basket than I have, do you know the dimensions?

  • @mstarksoUpperLipOutdoors

    @mstarksoUpperLipOutdoors

    Thanks for watching! The diameter of the basket is probably 24”. We’ve had to strap it on the outside of a pack. Just kind of clunky - certainly doable, though, and worth it, IMO.

    Outstanding video and trip!! It looks like over the years your group has dwindled to a couple of guys. Same for our group. We’re just down to a few dorky finance guys that drink and fish too much. We generally go up the Gunflint into the Tuscarora area. Just curious what you are using for a camera? I’m thinking of documenting our trip also. Let me know if you get a chance.

  • @mstarksoUpperLipOutdoors

    @mstarksoUpperLipOutdoors

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hey, thanks for watching! There are a couple issues with 2 tents for our group. First, depending on the site, there may only be one good tent area. Second, we only want to carry two packs. This last trip, “‘F’ Stands for Fishing” we brought a small tent and a hammock. We switched to a smaller stove and made a couple of other consolidating moves to keep our 2-pack goal.

    I have, but not on a slip bobber, only while jigging or trolling. I’ve also used a gulp minnow. Neither have been as effective as the live leeches - however, if we went in early spring I’d bet the gulp minnows would out fish leeches. Thanks for watching!

    Good afternoon. I got home very early Saturday morning. I had a fun and interesting trip. I exited 2 days early due to the weather going to crap on Friday evening and for Saturday and Sunday. First and foremost, I didn't catch a single fish, but not for lack of trying. I spent a minimum of 4 hours a day fishing. I wasn't the only one who came out empty handed, I had to ask the outfitter about it. I had the right gear just the fish weren't biting. Day 1 morning entry day its pouring rain. I try and wait it out to dry my gear before I put it into the truck for the week. It finally stops at 10am. I start getting my stuff dry on this cold morning. At 1130 i figured it will be as dry as it is going to get until i get home. So i toss it all in the truck and grab my entry permit and pay for the campsite for the night. I head to the water only to find that it is white caps. I decide that i have to go for it it is my entry day plus the white caps were all from a head wind. On the other side of the lake there were protected bays for me to rest in leading to the first campsite. Just before i make it to the first bay the wind rips the carbon paddle out of my hand. Oh great im up shitt creek without a paddle. Nope i also had the wooden Wenonah paddle with me. That was about a 20 minute delay. The first 2 close campsites were full so i had to look at the map and figure out where to go. So i head over to Alton and i am able to get that first campsite. The landing was shit along with the white caps. Granted that means that the first scratch was put on the boat that day. It took me 3 hours to go vertually no wear. At about 6pm the water was perfectly calm. On day 3 my water filter quit working. So I did bring a backup just in case and I used that for some of the trip and also boiled the water for some. The one map I had was wrong on a portage length. It said 12 rods when in all actuality it was over 100. I fell on that portage twice. Once from sinking past my knee at the beginning in some muck that smelled like shit, also I smelled like shit for the rest of that day and the following. The other fall was at the corner while trying to navigate around the rocks and the canoe got hung up in the tree and put me off balance. I also had to navigate 4 or 5 beaver dams this same day. Dam beavers, lol. That same night I got burned by boiling water on my finger while pouring it into my freezer bag. I didn't notice the leather had cracked on my glove and burned the top of my middle finger. Two big blisters that both ended up poping and being ripped apart the next day. Band-aid and duct tape for my finger the rest of the week and duct tape for the glove. At this point I'm up on Cherokee lake. Very clear water fishing for lake trout and northern. I was able to look over the boat and see the fish, see my lure but they just wouldn't bite. I tried everything in my boxes but no success. The neighbors at the next campsite are not having any luck either. They are base camping there for a week and they were on day 3. They only had 1 fish so far and it was on there first day there. I take off the next morning early to get a campsite on south temperance. When I get there they are all full. Go figure there are only 4 of them and its noon and there is a 200+rod portage seperating the next lake. So back across to North Temperance and I grab the first campsite. What a junk campsite but I called it home for the night. Set up camp did the camp chores and headed out fishing until dinner. Ate and went fishing again until dark/fire time. Next day broke camp and headed to Jack lake. Set up camp not great sites either and head out and fish. After this day I had no idea what the weather was going to be like. Around 230 a group of paddles come by and I ask them about the weather. The next day was going to be nice and the following morning through mid-day were going to be also Friday evening called for storms and rain on Saturday and Sunday. I asked about the next big tough portage into Burnt and was told it was greasy mud, rocky and wet. I asked if there were any sites left on kelly before that portage and there were 3 left. I thought about it a bit then broke camp and headed to Kelly. I got there around 5. I had a really nice site but I really wanted to fish burnt as long as possible. I pondered the portage for a bit, got some water, ate a couple of packets of oatmeal and decided to head off. I got to burnt and had everything set up just before 7pm. Also the first and only time I set up a tarp because I could hear thunder. I fished until dark. Next morning I fished until 11 without any bites. Knowing that there was weather going to be moving in tonight I decided to break camp and head for home. I met three groups of really nice people on the next two portages. They were all really impressed that I was out here alone and the loop that I took. After bull shitting for a bit I said farewell and headed off on the portage. I arrived back at Sawbill got my keys from them, loaded up the gear, took a shower and headed home. I got home around 1am Saturday morning.

    Two things that I did learn on this trip. Pack lighter( I don't need to take as much crap) and 1/2 to 2/3 of a 750ml bottle of vodka per night worked for me :) I packed 3 of those and 1 750 of Gentleman Jack. Came home with only about 2 ounces of Jack. All of the rest was consumed. If I would have stayed the entire time I would have had to....Bring More Booze! lol.
