BVI Update and Offshore Passage to Turks and Caicos

Two devastating hurricanes - Hurricanes Irma and Maria - hit the British Virgin Islands in 2017. In this video, we return to sail the BVI and get an update on recovery efforts before making a fabulous 3-day offshore passage to the Turks and Caicos.

    I had no idea you sail at night time. Couldn't you collide with another ship, a reef or something floating on the ocean? Do you have a warning system or do you stay awake all night? Do you have a night camera or night vision goggles? How does that work? How can you even sleep at night wondering if a rogue wave will capsize your ship!

  • @DistantShoresTV

    @DistantShoresTV

    4 жыл бұрын

    Those are all good subjects for another night video Richard! Thanks for the suggestions. 1: Another ship will show up on our AIS warning system 2: A reef will be on our charts - plotters 3: something floating is still a worry :-( ... we do keep someone on watch 24 X 7 at sea but realistically they will not spot a floating object so we have to be confident in the toughness of our hull in case we collide. Good idea for a Vid!

  • @sailingavocet

    @sailingavocet

    4 жыл бұрын

    As DS mentioned most vessels are equipped with AIS to alert the crew, reefs and other obstacles will appear on charts which is why you always plot your course prior to setting sail. A big danger is shipping containers that fall overboard from shipping lanes, those things will tear your hull a new one! That's why you switch off on watch. We usually do 3 hours on and 3 hours off to ensure we both get enough sleep. I hope this provided some more insight, cheers!
