The maxforce engine was made by Navistar and only found in International trucks, the Paccar engine is made by Paccar obviously and a better engine than the maxforce which was pretty much a POS. I am not a big Cummins fan but if I was buying a truck these days I would probably go with Cummins mostly because if you are somewhat mechanically inclined you can do a lot of work on it yourself and Cummins will supply the knowhow free with their Quickserve account and like you said there is a lot of shops that can work on them.

Back in the early 70's when I was a teenager growing up on a hay farm my dad bought a 53 Mack Thermodyne with a blown Cummins engine that had been sitting for a couple of years. Dad had been a mechanic in the Air Force. I helped him rebuild the engine and we had a cab-over for hay delivery that was classified as a farm vehicle that I could drive at 16 years old. Dad had never rebuilt a Cummins but he followed the factory service manual. It had 3 gear shifters so it had 24 forward gears. I ended up hauling freight with it as a summer job in Florida when I was in college. That job motivated me to get my Business Degree. Good pay but it was hard work for 12+ hours a day. And now I am in semi-retirement and driving CDL Hot-shot three to four days a week.

How is it going JUSTIN , Do NOT forget to pull the plugs on the TRANSMISSIONS and the rear ENDS and see how much METAL is on the MAGNET , Do NOT forget to JACK the FRONT end up and take a BAR and put it in the rim and lift it up and down and see if the KINGPINS are wore out or NOT tie rods and so forth , Put some OIL in a cup go have it checked , Crawl underneath and SHAKE your drive lines up and down see if they are wore out , I can go on and on , The more you find the more the money drops off the truck , You let them know what you found that you have to replace and fix and say this is my offer take it or leave it

When there is a splitter on the side of the stick, you can tell what speed it is from the color of the splitter. Red-13 Blue-15 Grey-18 There is also the 10 over, I think it's a red splitter, but it doesn't have the hi/lo in the front because it's basically a 5 speed that you have to split every gear

Hey Justin the mx motor is not a maxxforce motor the mx is paccar motor maxxforce was international motor which was actually a c13 cat internals and block international head and emission controls. Cat sold the rights to international. To each his own but stay away from emission motors and for sure stay away from cummins they are nicknamed cumapart for a reason. I've got one 12.7 detroit and two c15 cats inframed the detroit with head for around 15000.00 done the cats with head for around 18500.00 each. The transmission shifter has a red spliter button it's a 13 speed if the spliter is blue it's a 15 speed (don't make those trans anymore) if spliter is grey it's an 18 speed. Which a 13 and 18 speeds are nothing but a glorified 9 speed with auxiliary box on back of trans. My advice stay away from emission motors it's cheaper to inframe and maintain the non emission motors plus they last longer and they get better fuel economy.

To add to what has been said, if you’re buying a truck newer than 09-10, the chances of finding a CAT engine will be slim, as Caterpillar got tired of trying to do the EPA’s emissions dance and so stopped making commercial truck engines in 2010.

I learned to drive a twin stick 6x4 dual allison peter powered by an international v8, yes a v8! non turbo. She was old, but gosh I loved the rocket science it took to learn how to start the thing rolling and running efficiently. Unfortunately I couldn't pull a full dry van and had to stick to 60 ton or less since I drove the Virginia mountains. After that I graduated to a decked out Peterbuilt where my boss straight up told me I had to polish her every week and send him a picture. 10/10 work horse show truck right there. Too bad the company folded. After that I picked up for swift and left the industry 2 months later. I still get phone calls form companies wanting to pull me back in, but honestly I just commit to the life style anymore. Trucking isn't just a career, it's a life style. I'm glad Justin is out showing it for what it is.

Yeah i worked at the Caterpillar Mossville Engine Plant as a hot test specialist, which i would hook up the engines to the dyno's and run em thru the process and in 2007 i had a fire in my test cell almost EVERY NITE due to the new emissions control BS they were trying to get in order. All of 2005-2006 we got unlimited overtime cause they were pushing out all the Cat 3406's they could before the new emissions of the 2007. The older 3406 Cats were in my opinion the BEST ENGINE EVER!

Note the DDC DD 13-15-16 DPF one box has replaceable DPF filters and all components are replaceable. Many times techs replace entire components based on mileage Buying used get the shop to back up the filters. Most Freightliners are turned in by big flees at or near 500k Get a sales agreement on emissions devices of you can. I'd also request test drive with a tech and DL8 diagnostic running during the drive.any faults ask for repair first. This would be on any truck. Realize Freightliner and Western Star run Detroit and Cummins.

Cats aren’t that bad to rebuild, cummins seems to run higher from those I’ve talked to. I have a cat and have talked to multiple people who have recently rebuilt theirs for mid 20’s. If you take it to cat it will be higher. Cummins seems to make it to the 6/700’s , a well maintained cat will make it to a million miles. Detroit seems to split the difference. Cats are definitely expensive to maintain but go further between rebuilds. Detroit is the cheapest, can rebuild those for less than 15. (60 series) best engines: cummins n14, detroit 60, cat 6nz

I drove an ISX 871 good engine but it sounded like a box of marbles idling also the fuel mileage wasn't that great pulled great and you can't beat the jakes on that engine.

Second repair, coming around to 36k +/- right now. though I messed up and took it to Frieghtliner and they are charging out the butt on labor, 225 an hour. Plus, they messed up, left my truck hood unlatched, fuel tank open, and few other issues. I am hoping I can last a 2-4 more years with the Cascadia 125 I have and trader her in for a Volvo.

Sorry, kinda responding as I watch, but to tell which transmission a truck has between 10, 13, or 18 speed, the color of, or lack there of, of the side splitter. If there’s no side splitter, only the front one, it’s a 10. Red side splitter it’s a 13. Gray side splitter it’s a 18.

When i worked at the Caterpillar Mossville Engine Plant back in 2007 when the new emissions engine came out it was the downfall for Caterpillar and its engine division. We would have engines that would fail the hot test dyno testing and they would tell us to still ship it and they would fix as warranty work, hell they had trucks burn to the ground on tye highway. God knows i had fires in my test cell every nite when it came to the 2007 emission control engines.

My 2016 Volvo has 850Kmiles(more than 23k engine hours)on it and I haven’t needed to do an overhaul. I haven’t too many issues with the after treatment system either. I probably won’t be doing an overhaul until it reaches a million miles

Hi Justin, good on you for talking would be owner operators through, what can be a nightmare in buying the right Truck, for the right job. Your knowledge of engines is invaluable when it comes to buying a new, or used Truck. By the by, when it comes to knowing just what box is in the Truck your looking at, Grey splitter trigger is, 18spd. Red splitter trigger is 13spd. and black, I think, is 15spd. Not sure on that colour, been 25yrs or so since I 've driven one. Have seen every one of your videos, for the past 3 and a half years, of course, also a subscriber. Keep up the great videos mate, wouldn't miss one for the world, cheers. John,Queensland, Australia 🇦🇺

Nice video! I currently am a company driver with 3 years exp. I run for FedEx ground right now. I’ve put away over 30k cash and I’m just contemplating what a good next move would be. I’m looking at real estate, but I’m also trying to learn everything I can about possibly running my own trucking operation. Tough decisions.. either way thanks for the video 😎🤙

@@thomasb282it’s only terrible because people start out with a $1000 truck payment and care about driving more than about running a business. I go 55 mph with no truck payment and take home $3500 per week. I can live off of $1200 with a family of 4 per week and I put away $2300. Btw that’s take home pay. After I put away taxes, repairs, tires, fuel. The borrower is slave to the lender. If the rates were better, there’s no doubt I could be making 4-5k take home every week.

Maxxforce was international. Navistar and caterpillar teamed up to make the maxxforce and it was a total flop. The MX 13 is simply the paccar in house engine. They’ve gotten a lot better over the years, and if buying a 19 or newer, the MX really isn’t a bad option. I, myself, have the caterpillar C15. Only problem with a cat is finding an old school shop that regularly still works on them. Thankfully I have a shop like that and they have a better accessibility for old cat 🐈‍⬛ arts that other shops might have a waiting period for.
