exactly. in my opinon, 1990-2010 was such an era. The last of the cars that really weren't designed around extra strict vehicle laws and celebrities who just buy them to flex, but they were manufactured on the cusp of the tech boom so they're the perfect mixture of a somewhat technologically advanced car yet still maintaining an analog driving experience.

@@institutmorningkiss The M had improvements in the suspension, engine management, and the interior was updated. Body stying changes included the deletion of the hood vents and the rear diffusor was fixed. Some people prefer the pre-M for looks, I prefer the M. In the USA, the M variant is OBD-2 so you can pull codes easily with a home scanner. I have the auto and it's a blast. I don't miss the manual in traffic, and I don't notice the auto when I am up to speed. However, if this is to be your only Ferrari then I can totally understand that you'd want the gated manual for the full Ferrari experience.

Proper Grand Tourer Sam, in the best colour combination. Good view out, comfortable ride, fast enough, perfect companion for a long journey. You should go for it Sam. I am told that the engines are pretty much bombproof, but given that electrics are complex, a thorough pre-purchase appraisal by a Ferrari engineer -advisable! Get a good one (which this might be) and you have a V12 Ferrari on a (relative) shoestring.

Beautiful car but did absolutely nothing for me while driving, just felt like any other mid 90-'s luxury car and not that quick. It is very pretty but not pretty enough to justify 11mpg on 98 octane cruising from London to Monaco, seems like a waste of fuel. Great for weekend car shows but not for frequent use. If you must get a 'cheaper' V12 Ferrari the get a 400 or 412 as they have the Columbo V12, the same engine as used in the 250GTO & 275 / 330 / 365 a much more romantic and long term proposition.

Many do not like the look. I agree with Sam. I think it is understated elegance. We learned from Hoovie's experience that they actually are one of the more reliable Ferraris and relatively easy to maintain. A great deal on a car that will likely appreciate.

Sam, I want to love the 456 and I too would love one to go alongside my 360 and Abarth, but sometimes when I squint my eyes a bit I see a Ford Probe and then my stomach starts to churn a bit…, do you experience this phenomenon?

Ferrari made a video of them building the 456, which was to be the most luxurious Ferrari V12 ever. Extra effort went into every aspect of it. It had been conceived whilst Enzo was still alive & the guys wanted to build it in his memory. The ownership experience is less satisfactory. The side-windows are frameless & noisy. I’m unsure whether this was ever sorted. From memory there’s something costly that was fixed in the Modificato version. The M fixed many of the bugs. I’m a long-standing FOC member from 1982, & having been a member through the period the 456 arrived & was used, I’d say it didn’t really catch on. The 550 came out & is the V12 to buy! The interior & dashboard area of the 550 is just more dynamic than the bland 456! My conversations on running costs suggest £5k pa on 456’s. It’s not a car to buy on a modest budget or if you don’t have a very well-paying job! The Roma bought at 2 plus years old will make better sense due to high early depreciation but will have 5 years of Free Ferrari servicing left.

Sam, they absolutely would have CD's in 1994. That was literally smack dab in the middle of CD era. Nirvana's famous Unplugged came out then.

I've always loved the 456. Many slated the styling as 'bland' but I think it looks great, the interior too. I nearly bought a red manual 456 for £22k (£22k!) in 2014 but went for a V8 Vantage instead (for £10k more) due to potential running costs. I should've bought the 456 and a cheap runabout! BRG is perfect on this. Ideally with a nice rich tan interior, yum. Yes we had CDs in 1994, jeez Sam! Oh and btw that posh voice you put on... same as your normal voice! ; )

If it turns out to be the right car, and you can swing it financially, I say absolutely go for it Sam! For myself, ideally I'd prefer a 550, but if I couldn't find the right one at the right price, I'd be very happy with a healthy 456
