Buying an Alfa Romeo 147 GTA for £5K! - Project Alfa Ep. #1

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Welcome along to my new series, 'Project Alfa', where myself and my Dad (Big Neil) will be restoring this 2003 Alfa Romeo 147 GTA over the coming months as part of his new business venture, Brooks Restorations. This time I promise you will see progress and we'll actually get the thing finished, as I cannot wait to enjoy that beautiful V6 engine!
I really hope that you enjoy the episode, and please don't forget to like and subscribe if you do.

That radiator needs changing, it's missing most of its fins at the bottom. Give that steel coolant pipe a thorough check-over too as they are known for rusting and leaking.

Nice GTA. With a fresh cambelt kit, and water pump, those Busso V6 engines are tough as nails, and make good, honest real world power (keeps up with many newer cars with quite a bit more ‘claimed’ HP...). Three free bits of advice, (1) stay away from coilovers on these, unless it will only be a weekend track toy (she deserves better though), rather get a set of good quality lowering coils, i would recommend Eibach from personal experience, and Bilstein shockers. Also, the Eibach ARB’s transforms these cars as the factory arb’s are still too thin, especially that piece of dental floss in the rear, (2) i would recommend a front strut brace, as these chassis tend to start losing stiffness between the front wheels as they age, especially in the V6 engined cars, and finally (3), DEFINITELY fit an LSD, Q4 or Quaife is the norm, but there are others available too. These 6 speed boxes are generally very good, and coped well in cars like the 156 2.5 V6, but, in the Alfa GT 3.2, and GTA cars they had a bit of a habit of splitting open spontaneously due to the healthy bit of extra torque from the 3.2 engines. The problem was the differentials to be exact. In my opinion most of these failures are thanks to the aggressive way the ASR on these cars intervene in the event of wheel spin while the engine is producing torque. Probability for failure also increases dramatically when pulling away hard from a stop with any amount of steering angle while the ASR is active. A good LSD will solve this as well as improve handling quite a fair bit. I can also recommend to make sure these gearboxes are warmed up nicely before going ape on them.. Have fun with the build.

Former 156 GTA owner thoughts: LSD is worth the money, tames the front end, makes it more controllable & fun. Not sure whether you plan to anyway, but if you're doing the cambelt, check the water pump - if it's a plastic impeller, change it for a metal one. They are great cars, cracking deal.

Hmmmm not sure LSD is worth it unless ur gonna track it? It is a question as I have a OE gta and pondering whether to go for an LSD myself. It’s £700 for quaiffe plus fitting, not small beans and my one has survived 19 years without one. I might prioritise coil overs and 330’s first, mine has original 300s

@@alfamale9555 147 GTA owner and member of the French GTA Club here : Not only is the LSD worth it for traction and efficiency (even for road use), it is mandatory for reliability 😅 so many stock diffs broke, they aren't strong enough for the 3.2. And when it breaks you're also left with a hole in your gearbox, and it is much more expensive. I can't encourage you enough to prioritize the diff, for reliability and peace of mind 🤞

I fully agree Henrico. These cars had galvanised bodies from factory, and the only time i have encountered unusual rust (anything thats not surface rust) on one of these chassis was due to bad accident damage repair. They are solid cars. Compare a 156 side by side with any european car in its class from its time, and you will quickly see how well they were really put together. Door closes are solid, dashboards generally hold up very well with age, and Alfa used leather in these cars that was superior to the stuff that was used in VW’s and Beemers from it’s time. Also, i have had quite a number Alfas from this era (all V6’s..) and they were all between 10 and 15 years old, and none of them ever had any problems or failures that i have not seen or experienced on any European or Japanese car of this age. In fact, i used my 1984 GTV6 as my only daily driver for 3 years without a single problem. Preventative maintenance on any old car is the key to success, even more so on exotics, and that is what any Alfa is.

Lol. He got a good deal especially with the chassis being in such good condition. No jacking damage either. Just have to see what nastiness is lurking underneath those sideskirts🤔
