Awesome Alfa Romeo 147 GTA V6
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Certainly one of the more unique cars entered at Vic Time Attack was Marco Farina’s Alfa Romeo. The Alfa comes after a series of cool street cars including a turbocharged 12A rotary Mazda RX-3 and a Volvo 850 T5R 5-speed.
Marco has owned the Alfa since 2005, and it’s still powered by the factory 3.2L stock internal V6 engine. External upgrades consist of intake, exhaust and fuel modifications to make 217whp.
After breaking a bunch of factory gearboxes, A Holinger 6-speed sequential transaxle is the real bit of trick gear in this car. The clutch system has been switched from a pull to push arrangement using an AP Racing unit with internal slave. Certainly not a straight bolt in, the gearchanges are now very efficient. Marco comments the car has picked up two seconds on most tracks with the Alfa competing in all rounds of the 2016 CAMS NSW Supersprint Championship finishing first in its class.
While it might be a challenge competing with lighter weight Honda Civic’s, the Alfa really does sound fantastic at full noise.

Perfect weekend race car. Light and nimble, not insanely fast but quick. Must be a blast to drive in anger!

actually light weight small hatch and so big v6 engine its indeed insanely fast. 260+ hp is not to be underestimated for its class
While it might be a challenge competing with lighter weight Honda Civic’s, the Alfa really does sound fantastic at full noise.
Never thought id see the day a Alfa Romeo on fullboost, THANK YOU Congratulations to Marco for building a great car

Micheal Salvatore Alfa has made boosted cars since the 30’s.

yes everyone knows about the 6c but none have reached commercial success , I mean we had the 155 Q4 that was not sold in Australia which is crazy...

Micheal Salvatore you had the Callaway which was successful until Alfa got scared and the GTA-SA was one hell of a race car. You have the 2.0l Turbo Busso V6 in some European markets too. The prewar Alfa’s that were supercharged I’d say were successful in sales at that time period.
@savisk

Jimmy Grant the Callaway, which is super ultra rare and the 2L v6 Busso that is in the FWD isnt sold here . Alfa Romeo betrayed the RWD and have payed the price ... hopefully their new line can bring back the brand's name
@jimmygrant3212

Micheal Salvatore don’t think they really payed the price for it those cars were pretty successful especially the 916. You also have the Alfetta TurboDelta and Giulietta TurboDelta. Not sure why you need boost anyways n/a is much smoother and better power delivery.
well done Marco... this has been a long journey mate & now you have a great machine
Nice sound, cool little package
Nice. I drive a GTA daily and am blessed I get to hear mine daily screaming down the road. Great cars
splendid car ! What a project !
Very nice, thanks guys
Saw this at PI when it passed me on the main straight doing about 240 - it sounds glorious and goes like stink.
1:23 Lovely to see the #Nürburgring Sticker 😉👌 AND, i Love the Gearbox in this great Car 😁!
Sounds epic
Alfa Romeo forever
love the gearbox
The sound of that restarting busso at the end...waw
Awsome vid
Very nice sounds tuff too
Best sounding engine ever!
Stupenda
Sounds sweet
Sounds great! I drive a Honda Euro CL9 Type-S with a K24 that goes to 7600rpm (HONDATA) and sounds good with an intake. But it's not as good sounding as the Alfa V6 at 7000 rpm. My race car is a Alfa with a 147 GTA engine like this one. The sequential gear setup in this car is amazing! Just love it when he shifts!!!
I was just about to write how smooth he drove lol. Alfa really does make the best sounding V6s. If he went with a built and blueprinted motor he could squeeze even more power out of that beauty. Not sure of the rules of that series but a German friend of mine races his w a Garrett setup with only five lbs of boost that totally wakes that engine up he says. Anyway awesome looking/sounding vehicle
Meravigliosa!!!!!
Nice Car...I want to drive it...😀
I own a 156 2003 sportswagon facelift 1.9jtdm as a daily. and even that sounds great for a diesel great mpg and it's fairly quick for what it is.
mind blown
GREAT !!!
I m from Czech republic and my brother has ALFA ROMEO GTA 3.2 V6 and he is very satisfeid.
sticks like glue...nice
Thats amazing, now i want that to XD
That's a glorious car. I'd weep though if I put all that effort in to a thoroughbred with a real heart, and yet struggled to compete with a Honda Civic.

I've injected a lot of aero on the car since and managed to shed a lot of its weight, some 280kg in fact. Dry weight down to 1160kg. Still a heavy weight compared to a Honda though I am closing in their rear view mirrors fast!! K series Honda engines are far more advanced than the Alfa V6 and have a much longer power band and lighter! Their engines sit on top of the front axle, where the v6 front bank hangs over the front axle, not helping the handling cause. All good fun, the sound is killer and until their is prize money the Alfa stays!
Transaxle - when the engine and the gearbox located around different axles - for example a front egined car with rear wheel drive and the gearbox is built in the rear axle But as i know this is a front engined and front wheel driven car so can't be called its gearbox a transaxle. May i'm wrong, but i can't see a cardan shaft ...

Fantastic car, as a racing driver, how would you rate the car on tight sections, and more closed tracks ? would a lighter car (clio, civic) be the better choice in terms of performance - price ?
217/0.8=271 so assuming around 20% power loss between the flywheel and the ground, it should make around 270 brakehorsepower
FULBOOST RESULTS THIS RACE?
Nice work! If both my Quaife and Q2 failed within next 5 years. I know what I'll be heading. I just wonder how often the seq gearbox need to refresh and rebuild?

Just did a precautionary re fresh of the box after six years. All gears and shafts x rayed and seals replaced. All checked out ok, I didn't need to though I had the time. Holinger's fee was very modest a mere $800.

Wait a sec... There are plenty of stock 147 gta dyno tests, it's around 242 ish hp at the wheels.

Comparing randon dyno results to other random dyno results is a mugs game, before and after on the same dyno or same day same dyno are the only ways to get reliably comparative figures.
what is the RPM LED gear on top the indicator?
Did the carbon plenum make any change in power delivery? Low or high rpm?
a 3.2L thats tuned to make 217 whp? isnt that kinda low? or does it make a good amount of tq? (enough to blow the stock trans)

The Busso V6 is pretty old and it's making 160kW atw with no VVT, direct injection or any modern injection/timing tech. Just good engineering. Plus they're one of the best sounding N/A engines of all time
@pokinacha
6 жыл бұрын
frank white Unfortunately you're wrong big boy. Imagine that! Someone expressing an uneducated opinion on the internet. Honda and Nissan or any other v6 manufacturer weren't making an engine to match the Busso V6. The 3.2 dohc Ares built V6 was producing 250bhp or 184kW at the flywheel. That was without VVT which the Japanese manufacturers were using and even then they didn't get close to the power figures of the Alfa v6. The Busso was good for around 90-100bhp/ltr when tuned with non cat headers, injectors and an rpm bump to 8k.

I've just found another link that said the J32A2 was 260 not 270 in the type s version only. Then a brand new design 3.2 from 2004-2008 being the A3 version made 270 which was then revised down to 258. So not really much in it is it
@alfacossie

frank white if you knew anything about dyno testing and how they can be fudged or the inaccuracies of them you would understand the comment but I guess your one of those types who add an after market airfilter and tell all your Bruvs you got an extra 50bhp and then stick it on the dyno and tell the operator the dynos wrong. Other tHan a very specific environment and calibrated engine dyno the dyno tests are based on estimation and inaccuracies.
Are these the ones with the GM bottom end?

OldSkoolFunkn80s no buddy this engine is the busso
Bonjour ou trouver le capot .
What was the cause of the standard gearbox issues? Power isn't a problem for them. In the uk race cars are running over 270kw wheel horse power with no problem at all. The standard diff is not good for this so a quaife atb diff is used and they never go wrong. Two cars that race have 372 kw at he flywheel still with the standard gearbox but quaife diff and no problems. Also why hasn't a flat shift been fitted? It completely removes the time it takes him to move his foot on the clutch, also it prevents clutch slip which makes the clutch last much longer. The flatshift on my one cuts ignition by 0.135 of a second. Just enough to be able to flat shift properly.

can I ask what or why the little over rev happens on gear changes?
@patricksproule6709
6 жыл бұрын
Because he doesn't lift the throttle. It's called a "flat change", and essentially relies on the rev limiter to take care of things.
@mcr9119

Most people program a ‘timing drop’ into a flat shift to remove load on the engine. That’s why most sequential’s backfire during a shift

@@oscarzt1652 not so much ouch. Most cars that are set up for flat foot shifting incorperate a 2step rev limiter. The first step is low range limite, it ensures ithe car doesnt over rev on shifting flat. The the second step is the redline rev limiter.

How many Alfas have you 2 owned? I have had 3 from different eras, no problem (145QV,156GTA,159TI). I did change a standard diff to Q2 (in 156GTA) as it was prone to fail in 3.2L engines as in this 147GTA. I have 156GTA which came out many years before than 147GTA, in those Q2 was already factory fitted.

Your lesson should be here different one... don't buy cheap and expect great, also don't buy a car without full service details and let it be inspected by professionals before you buy it! Nothing to do with Alfa Romeos here. To be honest Alfas have one of the most bomb proof engines and gearboxes when maintenance interval is monitored and done ON TIME - - like if cambelt change or oil change is due tomorrow- you do it tomorrow! Not 1 week later etc.

Viilutaja don’t buy cheap and expect great? The car was purchased brand new, so definitely not cheap.
