Just don't use it and you'll be fine, once you start driving it all hell will break loose and it will nickel and dime you to an early grave, trust me they are endless money pits, my customer bought a 530i for 400 us dollars he thought it was the deal of the century, it's been sitting in my driveway for three months and I'm still finding things wrong with it, I warned him not to buy it, he's in over 3,000 now and climbing and the car still isn't right.

The main problem, at least in the earlier petrol powered 6 cylinder models, was that the cylinders were lined with nikosil, which reacts badly with the sulphur in petrol. My 1998 car needed a replacement engine after only 60,000 miles. I guess most should have been fixed by now but it is worth checking that any restorative work has been completed.

It's my first car and I got a great deal on it for $1000. The mileage is a little up there at 165K but the last owner seemed to have take good care of her so this mileage shouldn't matter as much.

I own a 2002 530dA Touring. I think you didn't mention a 3.0d engine which was used on these models after 2000. 142Kw (192Hp) with 410Nm. I got this baby last year for 2300 euros with 290k km on the clock( could not be original considering the age of the car). But still even today the car is amazingly agile. Enough power on the wheels for every driving style. And the fuel ecoomy is not too bad too. About 8,3 litres per 100Km average: 6,5-7L on highway: and then there is city:D Depending on the weight of your foot. 9-13L(yes i'm from europe, sorry guys, can't tell how many miles per gallon :D ). To everyone who is consideridering in buying one of these, i would say go ahead. It's a really great wehicle even when it's in average condition. P.s. the M57 engines are reliable even after 1Mil km.

the engine is reliable, but you can expect various leaks, check for rust and check the gearbox-it should change gears smoothly without strange noises or hesitation these cars can do easily 400 000 km / 500 000 km (250 000 mi - 310 000 mi) but only with the proper maintenance of course

  • @differentcarreview-dcr

    @differentcarreview-dcr

    5 жыл бұрын

the 528i was available until the end of the year 2000, so basically in before facelift versions, however in the US you could maybe buy even a 2001 model with this engine, but if you want to be sure then check the VIN number of that car - just put the last 7 digits of the BMW VIN number here bimmer.work/

-it really depends on if you want or if you are able to work on your car, because you can buy most of the parts for a good price, but the price of the labour on the V8 engines is higher than on the 6 cylinder engines -the V8 engines also operate at higher engine temperature than the 6 cylinders, so you can expect more wear and tear on the plastic components and on the gaskets also the automatic tranmsission - if the previous owner never changed the oil in it then it can be worn waiting for expensive repairs - but this also depends on the mileage all in all it is an older car so the rubber parts like bushings will be worn, leaks can obviously occur as well, but the most reasonable / reliable choice in the E39 is the 6 cylinder petrol engine - and it doesn't really matter which one

I would not recommend it, because first of all it's not very powerful compared to the other diesel engines, but if you don't need extra power then this is not an issue, however there are cases of cracked cylinder head - mainly if the previous owner treated the car badly so, all in all it really is better to choose the newer 525d with 163 hp or the well known 530d

My 1999 523i was a beautiful car, but reliability.... Everything electrical and electronic failed at one time or another, the front suspension gave up the ghost, the stupid damn boot lid lock broke - not once but twice. None of this was cheap to replace either - second mortgage on the house stuff. After that sad experience and the poor electrical reliability experienced on the VW Jetta I owned before the E39, I vowed I would never own a German car again. Japanese cars may not have the cachet the best European makes have, but they do get you there and back - if reasonably well looked after, they'll do it every time, too.

yes, the 528 is a more reasonable / more reliable choice, the 535i does have a little higher maintance costs mainly if it's the newer engine version with vanos - made after 1998, but if you can fix the things on the car yourself then you can choose the V8 too since most of the spare parts are not very expensive, if you don't want to fix the it yourself then be preapred to pay more money for the labour if you choose the V8

I haven't really figured it out yet but it seems like there a shortage somewhere that causes my window lifters, central locking system, wipers and various lights to not work properly. Already checked all the fuses and now I'm looking for some kind of a "melting protection" somewhere near the battery that might cause these issues since this only happens if it's like really warm outside. As long as temperatures remain below 25 °C everything works just fine. Mine has about 250k kilometers (about 155k miles) and just looking at the motor, these things are kinda indestructable. I've seen this model do over 400k kilometers with just the change of oil and almost no further service (motorwise) so I really don't want to get rid of it anytime soon. Only problem I had so far was a failing fuel relay pump right below the drivers seat. Easy to switch and relatively cheap, got mine for around 90 bucks and installed it in like 30 minutes. It's a solid car, fun to drive and if I get to solve my electrical problems I plan on doing at least another 100k kilometers with it. It's a real 6-cylinder, BMW doesn't make them like this anymore and I'd rather go on a bicycle than in one of those turbocharged shitmotors they build nowadays :P

Oh and there's another issue the former owner had; there was oil leaking out the steering box/gear. Had that fixed but it's a shit ton of work getting that piece of shit out and then back in. Since then my steering wheel isn't exactly positioned straight but the car's still going a straight line so fuck that :P

If you're poor and aren't mechanically inclined stay away from any older BMWs, they are endless money pits especially if they weren't properly maintained. If you do insist on getting one in spite of being advised not to as I advised a customer of mine, be prepared for an adventure of epic proportions. Just note that unless the oil was changed religiously be prepared to replace every engine gasket, the oil pan is not for your average DIYer, it involves raising the engine and lowering the subframe, then there's the oil filter housing gasket and you're going to want to replace the vamos hose while your at it, next come the valve cover gasket, on the 2003 530i I'm working on I've done all that and there's still oil leaking from somewhere, I've done the water pump, thermostat because the sensor in the housing was throwing a p01620 code,, every coolant hose I replaced, the power steering hoses as well as the transmission collar lines are leaking, they're next on the list an hid headlight ballast, vacuum hoses, they are prone to vacuum leaks so all the pcv and related hoses in the system and just when you think you're done something else will go wrong, don't even think about buying one of these if you're going to have to pay a mechanic to work on it again unless you have money to burn, and be mindful of the fact that it requires 91 octane,, the one I'm working on has only 93,000 miles on it and to be fair was not kept up with, good luck and also be sure to replace the DISA valve.

You can't expect to have a car that is 20 years old and not having anything to be replaced on it. There are so many parts and materials, they just get old like everything else in nature. Especially rubber and plastic - even the best ones deteriorate and lose their quality with time.

Any car has problems. An average car has over 30K parts so something is bound to break every once in a while! Older cars like the E39 series are likely to have issues due to their age. This of course, depends on who owned the car last and how well they maintained the vehicle.

The E39 was the last of the "user friendly" 5 series.; i.e. owner oil changes, tune-ups and basic maintainence. Any 3 or 5 series after 2003 should be left to competent BMW technicians as they are too complex for us shade tree gearheads. My 1995 E34 525i was probably the finest car I'll ever own although I have confidence in my 1999 540i sport with the 6-speed manual Getrag gearbox and 49k miles on the clock. - No, I won't sell it.
