Really good info I'm buying my 4 truck I like to have at least 50 k starting capital at all times because things will happen it's just a matter of time. Also if you have a older engine with 1 mil miles or more and it needs an overhaul unless it's a caterpillar engine I would just buy a new engine because lots of times it will cost the same that way you have warranty on the engine. I also recommend taking an on line course on Diesel mechanics pen foster offers one line course 50 dollars a month it will help you and save you thousands on repairs you can do yourself. I also recommend also looking to lrm leasing no credit check they go threw the trucks with a fine tooth come I have had a good experience with them on my fourth truck now payments are low.

When I buy, it’ll be outright, and pre-emission. Preferably from an O/O. I don’t want to be a slave to payments for years. When I want to park it, I want to be able to park it.

Something to consider, debt in trucking can bring gains; more money on the bottom tax line. 3-year tax truck depreciation/ 3 1/2 years max then trade-up the truck. Play the business game well and know one's numbers 👍

Oh boy, another know all. It’s good thought to buy out right. But oh it’s gonna pre emission. I’ve heard y’all before, basically a brand snob and you’ve been told by some old school trucker how to think. That’s not practical and won’t do you any good. Listen to what he said. Buy old be prepared for costs. If you listen to the jist of this, the best trucks to buy are 2-4 years old. 3-4 hundred thousand miles. Buy from a dealership you can negotiate warranty’s on those trucks. And you still have 500 thousand miles till major shit happens if you put away 10 cents per mile you will have maintenance equity. Yes, you need to have a considerable amount put away for tow and major but you don’t necessarily have to have it in liquid cash. If you have credit. Or property. Those can be consider as having operations funds. But I laugh at guys like you oh it’s gonna be... it’s gonna be... get the fuck outta here with that. It’s not that hard. It’s tough but not that hard to start on your own.

This is really great advice from an owner operator. All these drivers hoping to buy a rig should see this video. 15 thousand dollars in the bank for maintenance minimum to start. And that's even with a brand new rig. Go for highest gear ratio possible for best fuel mileage

One thing about oil samples on a truck from a dealer. 9 times out of 10 the oil has already been changed before the truck is put on the lot for sale. Also you didn't say anything about getting a rig dig or ECM report. And for better fuel milage getting a truck with rears in the 200's is much better for fuel economy. Depending on the transmission setup.

I myself am an owner operator, I found a company that is a fair and trustworthy lease purchase,,, wait, wait before anyone shoots me down, I really did my homework on company's to find a fair and honest lease purchase, I called lots and lots of companies and drilled them hard on a lot of things, I was a company driver for 5 years before this so I know the industry and talked with hundreds of drivers, I have a 2015 peterbilt 579 that has been very well maintained (oil changes every 15,000 miles) I got all the paperwork on the truck and what's all been done to it! Absolutely amazing on how well my truck has been taken care of! And it shows! If you are wondering what company I'm taking about, I would like to say on here but we are a small company and I'm afraid that to many people would call looking to get in and we don't have enough trucks to fill that kind of demand, all I'm saying is that if you really do your homework, you can find a good lease purchase and own a truck....

New they go for around 140k and they want around 40k down 0ayment then you need some extra money for repairs, yes new trucks do break down. Drove a brand new 2019 truck couple years back (well it had 70k miles when I got it but still new for a truck) broke down on me twice in a span of 11 months I drove for that company, emissions things but still broke down.maybw u don't pay for them since it has warranty butyoure losing money while truck sits at the dealership which the monthly payment doesn't stop and they ask for alot when new for monthly paymebts

Soooo much valuable information. Especially about maintenance records. I would tell anyone to save about $20K, put it in a high yield savings account with compounding interest and save for about 2 more years puting in about $300 a month. So when it's time to start your business you have enough capital to put a decent down payment on the truck and insurance.

It depends on what money your looking to make. I believe you can start with little money. You need credit though. But what you have to do is buy fairly new. 200 thousand from a dealership. Negotiate a warranty. That covers till your not having a truck payment. Meanwhile if you put away 10 cents per mile that covers PM’s. In the most part this leaves you with at least 2500 a week in net. That’s damn good. So it depends on expectations. Now after 3 years all that is done you will get a raise of 700 a week. 2800 a month. Now you’ve accumulated that 20 thousand dollar bank. You still put that PM money aside. Now your net is 4000 a month. What I always say is nothing comes to without hard work. What I just described can be done by anybody and it’s a 3 year plan. Then your making what you hear about. But 3 years at 2000-2500 a week and then bam big raise. Also at that point your rig has 5-6 hundred thousand miles and is still 2 years away from major repairs.

You mentioned buying from a single truck owner operator, which is probably the best person to buy from because they normally take better care of their business (read equipment), In my opinion I would stay away from large fleet trucks. Those trucks get multiple drivers, with varying skill sets, which becomes mechanical headaches.

You may want to lease on with some outfit. I pulled $2/mi Birmingham to PHX, $900/211 mi Denver to Gunnison. A lot of $1.50/mi avg on this current fuel rate. Going on 25th day straight, rolling every day. Standard flat bed freight.

I'm looking at going owner operator in the next month to two months. I'll have $20k as a down payment, $30k for maintenance account, and $30k for the safety net for house hold. I would just like to get a second opinion on the setup that I have going into it.

Just wanted to let you know your math was good, no need to subtract 1, the math applied gives you .769 or 77% driving time which is 23% idle. Also it’s 10,000 not 100,000.

You did touch on wheelbase but did not go into detail. A guy who bought a truck went to utility trailer to pick up his trailer but could not pull off with it because there was no enough room to make a turn without hitting the corner of the trailer once his cabinet/box was installed. It was ok for dry van but not for flatbed with a headache rack.

oil sample test and dyno run are non-negotiable things that must be done on any truck to be purchased. Any repairs that don't have paper never happened. no receipts means it never happened and it's not worth any extra money. "oh i did rods and rings...........no receipt" yeah, didn't happen.

I found a 379 day cab in a used car lot. Guy was asking $55,000 for a truck that had 812,000 miles on it. I feel that was a bit steep. Im not sure the lot owner knew what he had. Its been sitting there for a long time.

9-13% interest seems prohibitive. I've never owned a truck. I have bought used cars, and always paid cash. So nice not to have a car payment. Drive them easy, just put gas in em. I hope someday to be in that spot with a rig, but will be saving for years to get there. Last thing I want to do is get into a loan I can't pay on because of a breakdown or some random life event that comes up now and then.

P.s dd15 500,000 miles would need a $10K ONE BOX plus a $2000 fuel pump at 1 million ull need a engine rebuild plus a one box and $4000 injectors

New to ur channel, and the industry. Currently going to NETTTS in Mass to get my Class A CDL. I have $30-$40k to put down on my first truck when I graduate. Yet I’m learning that’s not how it works. Been reading that I’ll need to spend 2-3 years as a company driver before I can make the switch to O-O; before a company will hire me on. Is this the case? Or can I jump right into it? Paul Machowski I had 1 year and bought a truck and ran. You’ll have a lot less options the less experience you have. Otr is better to have more options. But I only did local (more money in my area) I’m looking to lease to my second carrier and keep moving up as I get more experience.

They know nothing about the trucks other than the few questions that they ask the seller. Overall, auction trucks are a crap shoot. Why is it being auctioned? Owner couldn't pay for it? Was that because of bad job, lazy person or was it because of constant breakdowns? You'll never know with an auction truck

If they just change the oil then no it won’t work, you need about 15,000 miles on the PM to get true results. I would do it as a precaution just in case. Some of the more severe problems will show up earlier than the 15,000 miles as well

I am enjoying it, there’s a lot of freight to choose from, some good some bad but if you know how to find a good freight, you can make really good money here.

A lot of your hearing is dictated by a direct drive transmission or an overdrive transmission.

Be careful buying a truck from Canada. The salt and chemicals they use in winter are tough on trucks. They tend to be very rusty.

Si if my truck has 30782 miles\ 60 gives me 513 hours / that by 700 hours the result of that minus 1 will give me .26 percent so my truck even though is new it’s above what you say to expect if I sold this truck people will flee

I have had good luck buying old swift trucks. All body panels have been replaced. They do go over them before they sell them.

Find me a truck that's averaged 60mph over its life....

it does mean that the dpf system has been stressed more than is healthy for it. unless the records show a program of having the filter removed and cleaned regularly, walk away

I made the guy I drove for a ton of money. Made the move in 2017 with a 2000 International 9400i & a flatbed. I own it all, truck just runs and makes money. Got to cast that line to catch some fish.
