This was such a well written series for the times and very well acted with a fantastic cast of actors nothing has ever beaten it and probably never will now as all the great writers seem to have all gone and given us all they had but I would like to thank all of them for making this series and for making our lives a little bit more enjoyable God Bless and thank you 🎚💞🙏🏻😘💕✝️🙏🏻💞🇬🇧

I completely agree. I was totally hooked on this series from the young age of 7 and understood even then the sincerity and poignancy of Ria and Leonards' secret relationship. So many tears (including mine) were shed. I honestly have no idea how both the cast and the BBC achieved the seemingly impossible by combining so much humour and warmth into what was not only a wonderful comedy but also essentially a heartbreak situation/love triangle. It will stay with me always. ❤

My mother had an affair and was really in love as was the new man with my mother. I was the only one who knew at the time and I had never seen my mother so happy. She was trapped in her third unhappy marriage and had a very limited life with an older husband....now she was young again and carefree and sparkling.....bit she gave up that love and stayed with the old fuddy duddy - he had guessed and she confessed and he begged on bended knew with many tears for her not to leave him. He said he would die without her.......so she stayed. He did try to make her happier and she got a few concessions, but she was never as happy again as when the affair was going on. The other man was devastated and drove hundreds of miles to talk to her and try to change her mind. He wrote letters and called......they moved away and changed their phone number to get rid of him. I felt sorry for him.

It can't be helped. They are different kinds of love in each case. We cannot always get all our need met in one relationship. Therapists say if we get 80%of our needs met we are doing well. People sometimes outgrow one another, grow apart, especially once the kids grow up and start leaving home. Some couples hind they no longer have anything in common. But they stay out of loyalty and habit......and commitment to the marriage no matter what may come.

I remember 'Butterflies' as a young child my mum watched it and she is also a terrible cook🤣but that aside I always thought it was a bit over dramatic. I'm Ria's age now, I'd be bored stiff married to Ben and kind or not I would concentrate on building a new life of my own; the boys were grown up anyway. She could then go with Leonard without all that baggage or just fly solo. She dragged that scenario out and then some.

To be fair, if she'd just gone with Leonard, it would have been a pretty short series. Will they, won't they always works much better than after they do. I also think you have to think your way back to the social conventions in the 70's. If you were going to remake this show today, you'd have to do it in an entirely different culture where divorce is still difficult.
