Bursitis (Retro Calcaneal Bursitis) at the Back of the Heel Explained by Brisbane Sports Podiatrist

Спорт

Brisbane Sports Podiatrist from Shoes Feet Gear explains Retro Calcaneal Bursitis (sometimes called Achilles Bursitis) which is inflammation of the fluid filled sack at the back of the heel. This gets compressed by the Achilles Tendon and aggravates. More information on diagnosis, causes, treatments and prevention can be found on our website here: shoesfeetgear....

Yes, the main thing is the height under the heel. Add some wedges to your current shoes or even better would be to find an extra wide fit in a regular brand with at least 10mm drop or stack height. I would then add another 6 or 8mm wedge into the shoe. Orthotics will normally make this problem worse if you don’t address the heel height of the shoe and calf tightness. Orthotics normally aren’t of very much benefit for a lot of people anyway for this particular condition. I hope this helps

When I wear high heeled shoes my pain disappears and when I wear my running shoes the pain just comes back 😥. I knew I was right but today I watched your video and it confirmed my suspicion. Thanks how I will try to find some wedges to put in my running shoes.

Yes, that one sounds complex. Next time you see your doctor, you could ask to be checked for underlying arthritic conditions to rule these out. When there are lots of problems with the feet/lower limb the general plan is normally to de-load with supportive shoes, strapping tape, orthotics or modify activity. Then, re-load with specific rehab exercises or gradually increase activity/take away the support gradually. I’m sorry I can’t be of more help from here.

Hi Mahesh, wear shoes with a higher heel and use wedges in the shoes to get the heel as high as possible. Once it is high enough, you should be able to walk and move comfortably. Then it is a matter of careful calf strengthening while you are wearing the higher heeled shoes. As the tendon insertion strengthens, the bursitis usually reduces and you can eventually go back down lower. I hope this helps you work through your problem. Also, plenty of calf massage! Shoes Feet Gear - Brisbane Podiatry hi. Thanks for you reply. The problem is I get pain in many other different places. On both feet. I think it has messed up my tendons and also I think I have bursa inflammation all over the foot. On left foot it’s above metatarcels on top sometimes bottom. On right foot it’s around the plantar area and back of the heel. On both foot it’s also the ankles sometimes. I stand for work. Sometimes I have to give doctors note to sit. I changed shoes recently and that made me unable to walk for 2 weeks. I have no idea what to do. I have tried heel cups, it helped a little bit but the pain transfers to different area. Problem is also my weight and my retail job that requires me to stand every day. I live in Canada and the problem with free health care is it’s very difficult to get referrals. I Dm have tried couple of podiatrist. But they couldn’t diagnose what’s the condition and misdiagnosed it as Morton’s neuroma with a bad ultra sound. Mri took 3 months to get appointment because of healthcare. It showed inflammation of bursa all over one feet. I should have gotten more tests but I cannot see an orthopaedic specialist for a year atleast. I gave up. Changed from a sedan to SUV and changed shoes. Slowly my pain got better. Until it came back recently after I switched the shoes cause my old one was worn out. That model was also discontinued. But thanks for the reply. For now I am trying to switch my job to something where I can sit. But it’s so difficult during Covid. Thankful for your reply.

Also the shoe I wear is Altra instinct 4.5. They are discontinued. And are worn out. I tried escalate. It’s bad. These are neutral shoes with. No height to the heel. It worked for 3 years. The wide toe box was very helpful. Now it’s so difficult to find what to wear. Three years ago I tried custom orthotics and they made my pain way way worse. I wanted to lose weight and cycled a lot. Now I am not even able to cycle. Wish I could see someone like you but I guess am too far away.

Shoes Feet Gear - Brisbane Podiatry I am using a roller for calf muscles. Definitely helps one of my feet quite a bit. The other one. Not so much. Again thanks so much for a reply. I have to check if there is any sports podiatrist in Alberta canada.

The pain seems to increase when the foot is flexed both ways. The inflammation accumulates during sleep even though the foot is raised to the level of the rest of the body. Ketoprofen is too expensive and requires prescription. After I noticed that walking in boots, pumps the inflammaton out, I took a pair of socks and tied them around the ankle really tight. Cold only seems to work while it lasts, just like with teeth.

What would I do to rehab it? I injured my soleus muscle and I believe since then it is caused bursitis and tendinitis. Thank you again for such great videos and explanations!

@@archie15900 I had the same issue as you. All I did was Heel Raises on flat ground. Adding 10% weight each week. I do 3-4 sets every other day for 10-12 reps. I started with bodyweight and am currently on +80kg (weight belt and weight vest) and am intending to maintain this weight. Orthotics and RICE are outdated and rarely work for most cases. I use this type of training for any type of tendon injury. I give each tendon at least 48 hours to recover before the next session.

By slightly pinching the pain area for 10 to 15 secs 3 Times a day this can be cured . At first the pain seems to be increasing but after 3 to 4 days it go on decreasing

It will probably go down in intensity over time. The first time I had it even biking was painful. That was 7 years ago, I still have pain. I did run a marathon last year so I can say it's manageable, but fixing it, I don't know. I've always thought flexibility will help, but I never became as flexible as I wanted. I think flexibility helps because what causes this inflammation will probably come back after you get rid of it if you do the same type of exercises, in my case running. I did do deep tissue massage, that was painful, but afterwards for 1-2 days the pain was gone. I also did ESWT shock therapy. That was also painful, but in the end I didn't feel it did much. Now that I think about it, the ESWT being painful means I did have pockets of fluid somewhere in the heel. I also have some bone spurs in the region, and those are either from my poor flexibility at the achilles which cause micro tears if you run too much. So some advice for you, like this guy says, put something under your heel to raise it, then the classical ice, pain killers, to get the inflammation down. Maybe do some ultrasound/MRI to learn more about your specific situation. Excentric heel drops is another potential cure, it never worked for me though. Good luck

ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE SOUND. CAN'T HEAR IT DUE TO SOMEONE TALKING LOUDLY IN BACKGROUND. I tried to listen and just couldn't hear you. The background noise is just too disruptive. You might as well take this down and record this again.
