    Could you comment on the effects of losing the laterail arch in the ball of the foot? I'm 57 years old, male, 5'-11" 180 lbs, and orthotics user for past 15 years and now have chronic pain from bunion in my right great toe. I'm using the two toe gel spacer which seems to relieve the pain. I've had Xrays and been examined by my GP and Podiatrist. My podiatrist is attempting to increase the arch of my foot lateraly accross the ball where the first metatarsals join the toes. This seems to make sense to me, if this lateral arch fails then the big and little MTP joints will be forced appart causing the bunions. Likely we'll get orthotics retooled to increase the lateral arch. Also can this be corrected without surgery, in your opinion? Below is the clinical diagnosis of the Xrays. INTERPRETATION: 1. No fracture or suspicious osseous abnormality 2. Mild hallux valgus angulation with mild osteoarthritis at the MTP Joint.

But how can I slow down it's development at this early stage?? I have purchased an insole and have been wearing it for several months, but I feel it is progressing a bit. Should I have an individual insole made? Thanks

    Thank you. I’m sitting in a chair right now recovering from a cheilectomy/osteotomy x3wks. My journey played out just as you described. I think these all helped. I really saw a reduction in swelling from traction and ROM stretches. I’ve tried all of your tips and think they helped me reduce pain and swelling as well. My subjective opinion is that I waited too long before doing something about it. Not much articular surface was left. I like the way you describe things and your Midwest accent. @@DrTomBiernacki I also subscribed to this channel. I have had several injuries to my right foot including an artificial replacement of the anterior tibial (performed beautifully by Dr. Alan Hartstein in Palm Beach, FL.) After being seen for a recent dog bite above the right ankle area I was informed by my Missouri podiatrist that I have the beginnings of a bunion. My first question was "what the heck is a bunion?" I been a runner all my life and only as I got older have I been starting to experience more foot issues starting with plantar facilities and now pain when pressure is put on my big toe joint. Friendly advice: See a Podiatrist, in real life, not on KZread. I'm not saying this man is NOT a doctor, or giving good advice, but who knows? I really appreciate the video. A lot of good information. Are gel pads corrective or do they only help in the short term? I used to use one but it was a bit uncomfortable but I heard if you are constant with it, it can correct it over time. Is that true? I am young and of a healthy weight. I don't have pain from my bunion but it sometimes makes walking feel a little unnatural. In my case I should not go for surgery, correct? Is it still helpful to go to a specialist in my case, to ask for more specialized corrective equipment or would I be okay with just wearing a standard gel pad by myself?

    What about getting foot shaped shoes? The one you showed was tapered at the front. Why? Hardly anyone has feet that taper like that. With that type of shoe you will be encouraging your big toe to bend towards the second toe. It has no other option.

    Why not foot stretches? Strengthening the abductor hallucis perhaps? Research indicates this could reverse Hallux Valgus in as little as 8 weeks

  • @DrTomBiernacki

    @DrTomBiernacki

    3 жыл бұрын

    Stretching the abductor hallucis would theoretically worsen the bunion. The issue is will 5 minutes of foot workout reverse 30-40 years of daily 10,000+ steps deforming the bunion? Especially if the bunion has arthritis, or if your knee or hip are buckling in placing abnormal stress on the big toe joint? Its like saying research shows cleaning your bumper and massaging it would prevent damage in a head on car crash.

    To anyone watching this and it claims it helps avoid having bunion surgery is the worst statement to make having people believe that this stuff corrects bunions. Its untrue. These steps only help lessen the pain in some people but if you have a bunion or bunions you will end up needing surgery anyways because bunions are your bones being misaligned and twisting and crowding the other toe next to it. Nobody wants surgery but in this case it is necessary because you will end up with severe damage which will result in more of an aggressive fixing of screws and what I call plate brackets, which also means a longer recovery of several weeks plus. If you do something about it early you can have a very minimal surgery to fix it that only involves 2 to 3 5mm holes being made instead of a huge top cut or side cuts which is more painful and more thickening scare tissue. Even if a person isnt feeling pain, you should still find a doctor who can do the less invasive surgery which can be achieved in a quick 20 minutes. And if you need proof I will be glad to provide the names and videos of such procedures that many doctors have been doing for more then 30 years. Dont wait, because you will be making it worse even for those that dont feel pain yet. I understand that this doc may have good intentions when making this video but avoiding getting your bone realigned properly early is a big mistake.

I then had to take a job on my feet but have not worn heels in 45 years, really got the right shoes immediately! Mine are just hereditary and I am a very petite lady so I can't lose weight to make them feel better. I wear the right shoes and have tried what you suggest. They don't look bad but are easily visible of course and I know I have to do surgery now. I did have four children and that probably didn't help my feet when I was younger. My twin sister had only two children but her bunions are way worse! I also read if you wait longer it is a tougher surgery. I figure I better do it before they get as bad as my twins.
