i think it takes place in 2006 because: A: Jimmy's birthday is 1991, and Jimmy is 15 ingame B: There is a digital color camera C: The monitor in the comic shop looks like a 2005ish monitor D: Galloway talks about the internet, which wasn't instituted as widely until the mid 90s E: And when Gary introduces Jimmy to the cliques in one of the first missions, Jimmy refers to the greasers as a "throwback" I.E their style is a throwback to a fashion style only popular a long time ago. However, I think Bullworth and Bullworth academy are deliberately kept timeless by Rockstar's design choices and pinning down one exact year is contrary to what they wanted for the game. The idea was to mix the best and most recognizable facets of school life from all eras, and make a big jumble of American high school culture ranging from the 60's to the early 2000's. Bully is deliberately made to be a stereotypical and unrealistic representation of a shithole school from pretty much ANY year and I think it does that very well.

The game never mentions Jimmy's birthdate and neither has Rockstar. the Wiki put it there because he was 15 at the time of the game, and the game released in 2006. He could have been born in any date. Digital Color Cameras have also existed in the 90's, maybe more primitive, but they existed. And just due to mentions of those years I think it for sure takes place between 1997-2007. I personally believe it takes place somewhere between 1997-2000. Also, lack of cellphones. It's not like Rockstar haven't implemented them into their games before but if Bully took place in 2006 they could work better than they would in previous games. So that's why I believe 1997-2000 is more reasonable, but eh, that's just me.

This game is timeless intentionaly. The developers wanted to create a timeless atmosphere so all players could relate to their own days in school.

@@OneLastScholar That's not what I meant. Yes, the game is set in 2006, but the point was that you can't really tell. There is nothing that specifically determines the year the game is set in. It could be set in 1976 or 2006 or somewhere in between and always make sense. You can't tell the year it's set in and you are not supposed to, because it's not relevant.

I'd agree, the whole theme of the game seems post-1979 as well. Some of the cars on the road are 1980s type designs, the library probably wouldn't have computers pre-1979, and many other things. It's old, but not that old. June 2, 2020 2:09 am

The geography class also doesn't have Yugoslavia in the Europe map, so that confirms that it takes place after the 90s

you forgot to mention that in the mission "Hattrick vs Galloway" Mr Galloway says he looks at "Dubious" sites on the internet to ease the pain. Blowing out the theory that it takes place in the 70's and 80's.

You forgot that there is a digital camera in the game and Galloway mentions watching videos on the Internet. It's obviously 2006. Not even 2000 or 1999 because Internet was too slow to watch videos online at that time. Speaking of outdated computers in the library and tevevision sets in the boys dorm. Well, for starters, if there is a TV that works just great why you need to buy a new one every year? Computers in the library are outdated, but school staff uses them maybe just to print texts.

If you ask me, 2000's definitely. I've been wondering this also and I decided on the early 2000s due to the LCD monitors in the Nerds' hideout. LCD monitors were around then, and they were beginning to be picked up by tech enthusiasts in that time. This is what the Nerds are. They are the early adopters of new technology.

I'm late but as long as the car isn't from the future, that's not necessarily a deciding factor one way or the other. You could have cars from the 40's if you wished since history just doesn't cease to exist when a new year comes. Most cars in game are around the 80's which were still fairly common for 20 years. Think of it. A 1998/2001 car will still look relatively new and common to you now but that's pushing 20 years old. Also, this is a relatively poor and small town in New England so you wouldn't really have a lot of newer cars around. Not that cars were really an important aspect of the game anyways.

The game starts in 2005, and ends in 2006.My reasons for thinking are these. The dates that you mentioned, the newspaper in the Yum Yum Market had 2005 on it, it would make sense for a newspaper to have the correct date on it, a newspaper is usually the next best thing to having a calendar on the wall. And then the paper with the car model year 2007 on it, the key words here are "Car Model Year", car manufacturers like to put their "Model Year" a head of the actual year presumably for advertisement reasons, so say you have a car with the model year 2007, that car would actually be available to purchase in 2006 due to the year being the model year, if that makes any sense. Plus the game came out in 2006, and usually unless there is a specific year mentioned, it can be assumed that the game is based in the era it came out it. And with the 1997 thing, my theory is that the reason the year 1997 appears so much, is because Grand Theft Auto came out in 1997, and it could just be an Easter Egg by Rockstar, we all know how Rockstar loves their Easter Eggs, we love them too. Then there are other things that my fellow KZread commenters have also stated, like how a character states that "Tattoos are so 1990's", or how Mr. Galloway talks about watching videos on the internet. Again, all this is just grasping at straws, but like you said, when it comes to this stuff, you have to grasp at as many straws as you can, so think whatever year you like, I've stated my opinion, and provided evidence to support it, and you can too.

Idk, maybe since the game was originally supposed to be released in 2005? Maybe the newspaper was created in 2005 and they forgot/didn’t want to change it to 2006.

It takes place in 2006 and I believe it would also go into 2007 after Christmas was over, the way i knew Bully took place in 2006 was the multiple ingame hints and also taking into consideration that Rockstar has a history of having games take place the same year they came out in for example: GTA 3 takes place in 2001, GTA 4 takes place in 2008, GTA 5 in 2013, and GTA Online's year changes in real time as hinted by a recent DLC that says "its 2017".

I have another for you, listening to the ramblings of Beatrice when she's wandering around the school, she often recites the periodic table to herself, when she recites the alkali metals, she only goes as far as Francium and leaves out Ununennium which wasn't discovered until the year 1985, surely a bookworm nerd like her would've gotten it correct.

It has to be the 00's due to the digital camera and the more up to date computers in Dragon's Wing comics. The 2007 dates are also a giveaway I reckon.

Yes, it's the one at the boxing gym. They made the punching bag with a healthbar and lockon function so the guy (I forgot his name) could get locked on it and punch it. It's distorted because the top bones are ''static'', but the bottom including the chain thingy have bones so they can bend when hit.

It's around the mid 2000's. In your hd texture pack video at the end one of the NPC's can be heard saying that he misses supersonic flights to London. This is a reference to the supersonic airliner, Concorde. Which retired in 2003.

It is set 2005/2006 canon. There are pill bottles that show october 2005 on the label. I do like to headcanon it as being set in mid to late 90's tho 😊

(just because I'm a massive skateboarding nerd, even though this is kind of a reach) I can sort of tell the time frame by looking at the skateboard, the skateboard in-game has both a nose and tail and is shaped like a Popsicle stick. This shape of board didn't become popular until the 90s. So we can probably eliminate the 1970s and 1980s.

I think this takes place around the time this game was released, 2006. However rockstar purposefully made it feel like a different time with vintage technology to appeal to a wider audience. They wanted to take people back to their youth on a nostalgia trip which if you ask me is pretty genius.

The overall atmosphere - imho 1980s Evidence - may be even 2007 I get your point with the late 90s, even Mr Galloway mentions the internet in one of his missions. But it would be really weird 90s. The Bullworth Town and surroundings always reminds me of the 80s movie "Footloose"

Pointless video. No mystery. Game takes place during the year it was released. It's supposed to remind players of what it was like to be a kid. Most Adults or teens who played this when it came out weren't glued to phones and laptops and things of that nature during their younger years.

I believe Bully takes place from around the '90’s to the early or mid 2000’s. I think that’s the timeline because one time I was on the football field and I heard Bo Jackson say “My old man says I’m the best QB he’s seen since 86!” Bo is saying that his father thinks he is the best Quarter Back that he’s seen since the year 1986, implying that Bully can’t take place in the '70’s or early '80’s. The way Bo said 86 makes it sound like it’s been quite a while since the year 1986, I think the years 1987, 1988, 1989, And 1990 are too close to 1986 to be referred to like that. So I personally think that Bully takes place either from 1991-1992, 1992-1993, 1993-1994, 1994-1995, 1995-1996, 1996-1997, 1997-1998, 1998-1999, 1999-2000, 2000-2001, 2001-2002, 2002-2003, 2003-2004, 2004-2005, 2005-2006, and 2006-2007. I typed the years all out like that because I don’t want to confuse anyone reading this comment.

I'm not sure if anyone has ever played River City Ransom, but that's a game from 1989 about a high school where you go around a semi-open world bearing up other college students (sound familiar?) Anyway, that game was made in 1989, with the game being set in the '50s or '60s, but referring to it as 19XX. The sequel (made in 2016) is mostly set in the 80s and the 90s, with a couple of references to the 2000s. The game however refer to this year as 19XX as well. This game exists in it's own Universe, cannabalizing bits of the seventies, eighties and nineties for it's own time period.

It sorta feels like they intentionally left the setting vague to make the game feel more universal to everyones' highschool experiences. I assumed it was more like Archer where they have things like 80s era computers, and the Soviet Union in the same time as Smartphones and the internet. So there was no definitive setting, and it constantly contradicts itself whenever suited.

heres a potential clue. The hobo was in the korean war. In order to be a korean vet in 2006 you need to be 71 or older (the war ended in 1953 and 1953-18= 1935. According to sheldon, Mr. Hattrick was in the war too as a sniper. Now while the Hobo looks to be 71+ Hattrick looks nowhere near it. So it could be either A) sheldon made up this rumor or B) Hattrick really served in Korea but this takes place before 2006. Let's assume B is true. Hattrick looks to be in his late 50's or maybe even 60. Assuming he was born in '34 or '35 (the latest possible dates) he would turn 60 in 1994 or 1995. Which if B is true means Bully would take place at the latest around 1995. Of course sheldon could be lying to get attention but if he is true this would be a huge clue.

Even though there's some pretty overwhelming evidence about the game being set in 2006. I like to think it's set in the mid 90s. Just because it gives me that vibe of the 90s.

Yes. I was a teen in the 90’s and when I played bully in 2006, I was overwhelmed with a nostalgic feeling. Very 90’s feel to it especially growing up in a small town like bull worth.

I was in the fourth grade in 2006. Our elementary school was right next to the middle school, and directly across the street from the high school (this led to bigger kids bullying smaller kids, but that's a story for another time) and our technology wasn't great, and many of the computers, and even books were completely outdated.

I think the developers actually confirmed through the bully website, that the game does indeed take place in the year it was released

I think Bully doesn't take place in the modern era - it takes place, most likely, in the 1980s, early 1990s at the latest. There are a few scattered references to modern things, but the vibe of the game is 90% old and 10% current. The modern computers in the Dragon's Wing basement could be satire for the nerds being so into technology that they would have things "ahead of their time", because they don't make any appearances in the game. The "digital camera" could just be a color film camera; after all, Jimmy starts with a B/W camera, and even the "digital" camera can only hold 24 photos IIRC. There are NO cell phones in the game. While cell phones didn't take off until about 2000 or so, a total lack of them would indicate pre 1995. Also, there are no computers in the Harrington House, no computer class on campus, etc. The "internet" is a continuity goof. On the other hand, Come Hither would seem to sell, erm, salacious video tapes. '80s. Arcade machines. If it was 2006, would there be that many arcade machines around? The styles of gameplay also call back to the 1980s. There are no fighter games, which were very common in the 1990s. The game play is pretty simple. Even Street Racer 3D has similar gameplay to Pole Position. That's from 1982. The cars. GTA never had a problem modeling period correct cars, so why Bully? The newest cars in the game are in the boxy early 1980s style. There's nothing aerodynamic. So if the game took place in 2006, the newest cars would be 20 years old. Surely the people of Old Bullworth Vale like their new luxury cars. In shop class the car being worked on is '60s. I could go on... April 10, 2018 10:15 pm

I personally believe it takes place in the late 90s. The laptop that you'd previously mentioned would fit that time period too, as thinkpad laptops became popular in the 90s. Great video!

They existed in the 80s as portable computers. Apple, while not the first, made a "luggable" laptop in 89 dubbed the Macintosh Portable. Had an AMLCD, battery powered, and even a trackball built in!

The old tv in the prep house makes sense because by at least 2009-2010 a lot of people got rid of the old tv and got flatscreen tv

Theirs also a poster that says "larp fest 05' " in the dragons wing

I saw some poster in the joke shop in the nerds basement that says "carp fest 05" so if 05 is meant to be 2005 this means the setting is from 2005 and ends in 2006. There's even a newspaper that says august 22 2005 or something. So I believe its set in 2005.

the game takes place the year it came out. I looked up when the very first time it was released, which was October 17, 2006. Just because you dont see much tech around doesnt mean its not there. The school and town is not caught up with tech yet so its behind a few eras. Hence why you see old looking cars and tech.

In my opinion, I think Rockstar made it ambiguous on purpose. Open to the players interpretation, or even to no interpretation at all. When I played, I never even considered a time period. Like yeah we all obviously know 2006, the year it came out, which could be the year it's set in as well...but having it be so murky makes it more interesting. I mean I wouldn't be mad if they came out and gave us all an answer...but having set in no specific year makes it seem timeless, in a way

I aleays thought it took place in the 90s as well because of that one greasers comments about robbing gas stations but having to stop because they recently switched to card readers and I remember as a kid that the big switch from all the adults having to carry cash all the time to being able to use their cards at like 99% of places happening in the late 90s

The game clearly takes place in 2006-7, though thematically Rockstar intended the game to be timeless, so that all audiences would be capable of enjoying and relating to the game.

It took place in 2006-2007 because if rockstar makes a game that’s supposed to be set in a certain time period it would tell you but if not then the game is in the year it actually came out,the fashion, weapons and arcade games threw me off I thought they were in the 80s or early 90s but it could be that everything in the school and some parts of the town are out dated and that the people were far behind the mid 00s culture

my guess is probably 2005 since the game was originally gonna come out in October 2005 instead of 2006. not to mention that having a digital camera with a colored display and Mr. Galloway's mention of the internet automatically debunks the theory that it takes place in the 70s or 80s.

The newspaper says 2005 and there are laptops and gaming PCs. Case closed, the game takes place around the time it actually came out.

There's a festival poster in the nerd's hangout that says 06 on it.

There were a lot of backwater towns in 2000s, which had the old tech from 70s or 80s in everyday use. As a matter of fact, my home town was like this.

How about who won the Candidate Election between Earnest and Ted? More likely it'd be Ted. Especially, if you rally up every student (except for Zoe) from the school or the students that was there during the mission.

It does look like 1960s to me like beatrice theres those types of gurls that looks like her in movie in the 80s but with 1960s nerd girl glass and the hairstyle

At 5:55 the last part of the flyer says This May Also if the Endless Summer Purgatory theory was true, the references to random points in time would make sense. Like Jimmy died in car wreck on the way to be dropped off at Bullworth, and now he's forever stuck in a time void with the spirits of various past students of the academic in a landlocked town that has no exits via land or sea, yet features has seemingly useless train tracks with dead ends and a lighthouse. While in early development, Jimmy had been scripted to die if he lost either of the last 2 boss fights but he would still respawn to start the mission over. The fact that he could've died before the the big plot hole filled ending tells me he's been dead the whole time. Almost gives a Shining vibe, like "You've always been here"

That newspaper could August 24, 2001 or 2004 I think since the way the last number looks could be either one.

It would make perfect sense that Bully would take place in 2006 because of the poster about the cars. In the year 2006, 2007 models of cars would be new, so it would make sense that they could be prohibited for one reason or another. That paired with the release year of the game being 2006, Rockstar's tendency to release "present day" games like GTA, and the newspaper date which has a 200 and then an unknown digit would make me believe it's in 2006.

I would say it's a least the late 90's because laptops were around back then and the arcades say they were made in 1995 but 2006 still makes a lot of sense.

I'm pretty sure that newspaper says 2004.

I think it sets around 2000s, not just in 2006. It reminds me there is an old lady working at my University years ago, she get used to typewriter and doesn't want to use a computer. So any memo from her, we get this retro text paper written by typewriter, I think its the same case with the librarian. Maybe it sets in around 2005 or 2006.

The game takes place at the time of development that is 2004-2005 but the aesthetic is based on 80s and 90s just so that the game is more interesting to look at.

Bully is an experience that brings people back to their childhood and makes it a bit more mischievous. So it only would make sense if Rockstar made the year unknown and open to interpretation since loads of people grew up in different time periods at school.

I don't know too much but I always had the feelin' this had to be set in the mid 1990s, it seem similar to the This Is England series with the main character cast and culture.

Bully takes place in 1994, because at the time, ricky is 15, and in gta 3 which takes place in 2001 he ages 23, kinda makes sense if you think about it

I am for 1997-8. News papers and papers snippets are just tiny blurry textures that bear rather little weight. It could be just a picture of real note. Everything else points at late 90s 1997-1999.

I'd say 1995-2000 due to the tech ingame and the poster with 2007 on it might be resused

Hi Nathan, I'm playing the ps2 version of Canis canem edit and I discovered a glitch that let me use the spud gun, during stronghold assault. I got knocked out by Earnest a few times until I realised it was in my Arsenal,

1:07 that looks like a later version of a commodore pet which whould make sense as they were mainly made for businesses and educational uses

Another thing is when you get tattoos there’s a girl that says “Tattoos, isn’t that a little too 90s” so it obviously has to be set in the 2000s then

There are punk rock concert fliers around the town that list a year. But if I remember right its something like 1978 or something. But the game takes place in 2007-2008 in a ghetto school in a trashy town. But the creators of the game went with a nebulous overall setting to make it feel timeless to people who grew up in the 80s/90s/and early 00s. I graduated high school back in 2006, and the game world felt a couple years behind even back then. But it still sort of made sense given I had always gone to crappy poor schools, and the tech in them was about on par with Bullworth.

Bully always felt like a lot of it was inspired by 80s teen comedies to me. I always figured it was originally supposed to be set in the early 00s, then they decided to time warp it back, but keep some present day elements intact for ambiguity. The visuals as a whole absolutely scream 1986, with a few breakers, like the flat screen computer, but that's just my opinion.
