100% agree. I bought cars online for almost 12 months in 2021-2022. I decided to start going to auctions in person because the quality of the cars was not accurately described by the CR reports. Since going to auctions physically over the past 5-6 months, my average repair/recon expense per vehicle has dropped almost 70%. It is more time consuming but the quality of vehicles I am able to purchase because I can evaluate in person has drastically improved, in turn, improving our monthly sales volume. Take the time and go in person, it will not take long to see the fruits of your labor.

@@MrMalort absolutely incorrect. The $100-$200 he pays to a buyer that can physically inspect the vehicle before purchasing will save him $500-$1000 if not more. Respectfully, having a sales person and office staff to handle day to day transactions, he has no excuse to not go himself. Online is easier and convenient, in person will save/make him more money in the long run.

I was a whole used car buyer for a dealership in 21 and 22 and I solely did in person inspections before making offers. You gotta be in the car right to try to make money on it but also, if there are parts back orders that costs you money to try to repair because now it’s depreciating while you’re trying to figure out what to do. The most money you’ll make on a vehicle is in the first two weeks after getting it, so you need to recon ASAP. The more to fix, the more you put yourself at the mercy of the parts market.

I have only bought one car in my life that I did not look at and test drive first.. That was a 1995 Geo Tracker in Chicago at a Dealership.. They claimed it was original paint.. You could see fresh green paint in the wheel wells over the undercoating. The car was mechanically sound for the most part 5 speed manual. I drove test drove it in the City after I had already paid for it on E-Bay .. It seemed to drive fine in the City. When I got out on the Highway I could barley do 55 MPH .. I did hear a metal rattling sound at times. Stopped at my friends house on my way home .. got the car up on blocks.. I figured out that if I really revved up the engine the springs by the exhaust manifold would let the exhaust pipe push away from the manifold then it could make a bit more power. It turns out there was a lose piece of metal in the catalytic converter that was blocking off the exhaust .. Romoved that piece of lose metal and it ran with normal power..

Doing proper CR's add to the costs to the auctions to do them and if done with details, like listing the issue with this Mazda, lower the selling price of the vehicle and in turn their fee$ they can charge. The sad part is that this might be a mechanically sound vehicle with a lot of life left in it if properly priced to allow for repair costs. You could try online sources or junkyards for the mirror, headlight(s), headrest, other parts needed but that can be costly for your time and still flawed or the wrong color.

I own a car dealership, there is so much misinformation on these videos. If you went to the auction to check those cars in person you wouldn't have done so badly on them. You can't trust CR or auction photos. I have seen many new dealers not able to stay in business who try to follow the pure online buying strategy. I have one of the most efficient inventory processes in the country with data to back it up. My dealership is probably 15 miles from you. I have purchased over 5000 vehicles in the last five years alone at auction. I have sold 80+ cars per month for over a decade. I don't have to travel for auctions, I buy local. My mechanics and I physically check the vehicles ourselves. There is so much you're missing when you're only buying online. You can't touch, smell, drive, and inspect all aspects online. Because I buy at a local auction, my cars are my lot the next morning. Time is everything in this business Especially since i know you have to be operating with a floorplan. I learned on a 2M floorplan, its a great way to get more efficent But i now pay cash for all our inventory. My time to line is 2 days. My average age of inventory is 15 days

Everytime, I hear carfax I am surprised people bring up that useless company. As a former auto adjuster I tell everyone that carfax is junk. I worked for geico and we did not report to them and most body shops don't report to them as well. Insurance companies use their own system that is communicated between most of the big boys which will tell you all kinds of things that isn't on carfax but unfortunately it isn't available to the general public.

In Canada actual mileage is recorded at a provincial level so we see out of province vehicles for sale. Why, because it allows them to roll back odometers. They can switch pods from wrecked vehicles or tinker with them in other ways. 😮I once called for information on an out of province truck to the other provincial entity and they refused to give me any information. Protectionism between government and dealers?? It’s supposed to be public knowledge the odometer reading 😮

Sounds like you need to talk to other small car dealers who have less than a hundred cars on the lot to see which auction houses that they favor. Word of mouth reputation is very important. Tap into the collective experience of dealers like you who are located close by geographically.

I did have a very good experience with the chevy dealer in Rolla. I bought a 2019 Malibu Lt. To me it looks like a new car and very surprised that a 4 cylinder engine is so peppy. The one thing that I am disappointed in is getting extra key fobs with laser cut key (high Security) There is no locale locksmith to create a new keyfob and laser cut key closer the 45 miles away and quited a 350+ fee for a new extra key. I did go through Tom's and have two new keyfob and laser cut key cut a about the same price of one from Chevy dealer. I have driven a 41 Pontiac, 50 Studebaker Champion, 55 Buick Century. 64 Chevy C10, 70 Torino, a Amc Hornet station wagon, 94 Ford F250, 2004 Silverado, a 2000 Mercury mystic and had never as much trouble to get extra keys in case I lost one. Technology can be great, but difficult at times. Why dealers charge so much I don't understand

Usually those cars are deemed as "Vandalized" most time they are written off by the insurance "salvage title" Someone must of fixed the things they could and traded the suv in.

Absolutely. My guess is those replaced panels were from the shooting. I'd not be surprized if the seats weren't original, either, as blood and the like is hard to get out. There's no way a bullet hole through the headrest didn't end badly. Sorry to be graphic, but that's literally where your head is. The front being replaced would be likely because it rolled to a stop against something.
