Just to clarify a bit for people... when purchasing via simulcast (online bidding) you are giving a certain amount of days to arbitrate the vehicle (contest with any claims) if you pay the auction to transport your vehicle and it arrives after the allowed timeframe, many auctions offer an additional 2 day allowance. If you arrange your own transportation though (sometimes cheaper) and it doesn't arrive before the allowed arbitration period, then too bad it's your vehicle. Manheim is known for their poor condition reporting. @chevydude is lucky they gave him anything at all as the terms state and agreed when bidding. @chevydude just a heads up, be careful biting the hand that feeds you. Calling them out now could kill your business later if they lock you out of thier nationwide auctions.

sFLYING WHEELS (CRAIG) is the BEST, most honest, reputable, and definitely most knowledgable used automotive dealer on KZread - you can ask him anything and he will be straight-up honest with you. MANHEIM is just as crooked as the brokerage firms and investment banks of the 2007 - 2009 housing crash, some law firms like the ones that went after big tobacco and the brokerage houses and investment banks need to also do a nationwide class-action lawsuit against MANHEIM/COX AUTOMOTIVE for all of the deceptive and fraudulent activities that they commit.

@@fuzzyduck3316 In your view, is it really even worth it for a customer to try to work with a dealer to go through the process of buying from the Manheim auction? I am on the verge of buying a new vehicle this week. I started working with a dealer to purchase through the auction, but I was honestly not impressed with the deals he offered. They were not bad, but really just competitive with the market overall. For one of the vehicles, Carvana (of all people) actually beat the price he quoted, though his price would have included the warranty. Ultimately, the guy threw a fit and returned my deposit, saying that he had found the best deals that could be found, and that he was not going to allow me to waste his time endlessly. Mind you, we had just met the day before, and he had only sent me up a few possibilities. Now I have a referral for another dealer who can buy for me through the auction. I'm going to let him know what I am looking for and my budget to see if anything is available that looks like a great deal, but my concern is the possibility of having the vehicle arrive days or weeks later, only to have to arbitrate the vehicle back to the auction, thus prolonging the process. My car is dead in my driveway, and I'm not putting another cent in it, so I am not interested in more weeks without a car.

@@ls4.8frank add to that the margins are thin nowadays, super terrible time to get into a used car lot. (I only say that because used cars prices are high, but most auction cars, not all but def most, are vehicles that dealers will not sell, which we all know). If you dont live in the middles of a couple auction houses, than a used car dealership isnt where u wanna be solely because u def need to scan n inspect them in person for sure. Also, Manheim is the better auction. So if they are doing this, all the smaller guys are def dping this. I've learned the best deals are having cash, and scooping up local cars for sale by regular people. They are generally 1 or 2 owner cars that have been there locally the entire time which is good. However, there is a lot more to this market than any other. 1 is people think they deserve the same amount as a dealer, which they do not. 2 some people are flipping cars so the first thing i do is make sure they had for a long time n scope them out, i try my best to meet at their house If they wont meet at their house its a red flag I) have a red flag system, 1 geta my attention n makes me inspect the details better. 2) makes me really look into everything. 3) i low ball the f out of it, if im still interested, n if they dont want my price im out.

Junk cars have always been sold at auctions. When I was 16, I gave my parents money that I had worked and saved up for to get a car. They went to the auction and picked me out a 1988 Honda Accord with the flap lights. I was so happy to get my car but what they didn’t want to tell me to spare my feelings…was the transmission was BLOWN!! See they had no way of knowing because the auction didn’t allow you to test drive the car. You could only crank it up, and do a visual inspection. I remember crying for the whole 8 months it took me to save up the money to buy a transmission for the car. We all learned a valuable lesson that day…never buy a car from auction again!!

Times have changed I have been involved in the car business all my life and what I’m seeing in the car business is scary. Massive engine problems, salvage cars with clean titles, flood cars with clean titles and a laundry list of problems that when you sell a car like you say buying a car doesn’t have to suck but there’s nothing that you can do to make it better. Because you have no control of what your buying. What I see on a daily basis scares the hell out of me. I have a lot more to say but I would be the rest of the day. Good luck on your dealership.

Hey Mike, I would highly recommend you look into consignment vehicles. That way, you can inspect the vehicle with the car owner, agree on what the value of the vehicle would be when sold by your dealership and what your % fees would be. Would save you a lot of headaches in this market. You need to do things differently than any other dealership around you. Make yourself unique. At least till car values level off. As we all know, it is currently a sellers market. No one should be selling their vehicles to dealers or auctions at the moment as they are all easy sales on autotrader, Craigslist, etc. Going to have to wait about eight months before repossessions start getting heavy. The problem then will be finding buyers in a downturned market. Tough times for small fish in shark infested waters. Good luck

Auction took it back due to my manager paying for the extra insurance. Week later that car is up for auction. My manager thought it was fixed since nothing was said. I have a FJ Cruiser 2014 with 13K bought it new loaded with all the extras from Toyota it’s black with the white roof. Ugliest damn thing but my wife loved them? She barely drives it would have 5-6K miles if I didn’t let my son use it for about 8 months. But it’s in excellent condition I just had to change the tires because there dry rotted, wiper blades, battery because I have to jump it off. Like you said I would ask questions & I would be able to explain but from a auction something is off here with this car otherwise the dealer would have just kept it on there lot JMO. Prior to the whole car market going crazy I always found it weird that there is a huge demand for a FJ & I could sell it for about 1-2K more then what I bought for new then. I was just offered 42.5K by the dealer last week & it’s a stock FJ. So needless to say I am going to see if I can squeeze more out of it & sell it. We have a extra vehicle & I’ll just wait until it all comes timbering down to scoop something else up for her. These new generations have no Patients they all want it now. Sorry for my comment turning into a novel.

It wasn't a car salesman that screwed you. The appraisers that many auctions hire just plain suck. They don't pay squat and turnover is constant. And to make matters worse, dealers drop off their cars at the last minute and still expect condition reports to be done on a timely basis before the auction. It's all they can do to find people with drivers' licenses and show up to work every day. Many are not good at their jobs. This is a good experience for you because it's obvious that you don't know much of anything about the used side of the business. You're a green pea again, and the learning curve is steep. What you went through is a very common occurrence. There were three red flags here. One, about the only way a clean low mile 8 year old vehicle is going to be at the auction is if there's a problem with it or it's a repo. And there's no such thing as a 4.2 repo. Two, you would need a Carfax account to know this, but if you look at the vehicle's history, it was sold at auction in October to a used car dealer in SC and back at the auction in December when you bought it. If it's a rental rocket that's a year or two old, that wouldn't be surprising. But on a 9 year old low mileage car, a definite red flag. I believe an Autocheck report would show the auction entry as well. And that brings me to number three which shows that Meridian is the seller listed on your CR. Yes, they sell arb cars as well, but they also sell repos. Point being, if you're going to buy online, you need to be a sleuth and assume everyone is trying to screw you. You have to know who the sellers are, even if you have to Google them. You have to know which auctions are better at CRs and will stand behind them and which ones don't. Well, that or buy Manheim's deal shield product that will offer some protection against their screw-ups. You might try someone like ACV which has better condition reports along with video, but I would without a doubt recommend attending a couple of physical auctions a week to learn and understand what really goes on at one. Find some peers to befriend and lean on them a bit to help you out to help avoid these kinds of surprises. If it makes you feel any better, the industry has been working on the online auction model for 20 years and it still sucks. No one said an education was cheap. Welcome to the used car business. At least you got it sold.

Why not just buy vehicles off private parties? There’s literally thousands of cars on Facebook new and old for much cheaper than dealer prices. Auctions vehicles are normally there for a reason and a lot of the times junk or have hidden problems.

Literally some people don’t like to share their numbers to run full history reports. Plus it’s not that simple as it seems. Some cars require too much maintenance and you end up with a fair sale or loss

@@Ray00069 I don’t understand you’re point. I flip cars all the time and buy online from Facebook/Craigslist. You just go check the car out and if it’s what you thought and there’s a profit to be made you buy it and if not you don’t? I don’t need a full report to listen to the engine run, check fluids, check for hidden rust/repairs and then take it for a decent drive.

@@mustang35146 I’m speaking as in a dealer vendor perspective. As a private vendor, shit of course I would do it too. In fact, I’m a private dealer vendor and I do the same thing. It’s really just taking the time to see the car in person and know it’s condition and go from there.
