Bulgaria Vlog (Be prepared if you visit Vidin this year)

I am in Bulgaria again and in this travel vlog I am advising you to be prepared if you visit Vidin (Видин) this year. The city located on the river Danube is currently undergoing a huge infrastructure upgrade so maybe wait until next year.
I have been visiting this region for the last 11 years and have seen a lot of changes but this is absolutely huge. There are still many things to do in Vidin like visiting Baba Vida fortress or fishing in the Danube.

You're right Mike, Vidin has such a potential. I've only been there once, 4 years ago and it was really sad. It's the poorest of the major cities in Bulgaria, but I instantly loved the city. Just entering the city from south and seeing all the abandoned "Vidahim" and other factories, where most of the people use to work back in the days, was really depressing. Not to mention broken infrastructure, post-communist neighborhoods that look like Sofia in 1996 and so on. But then I saw the Fortress with all it's gates, the "Baba Vida" citadel (best preserved in the whole country), the beautiful old buildings in the center. It's a city with great history - interesting enough founded by Celts, former Bulgarian capital in the 14 century and famous for many historical battles. Still I'm an optimist that the city will recover, recent years it's doing fine: - They are improving the infrastructure and the city center; - More and more companies start to invest there, because it's cheaper than other places, and they've got a brand new industrial zone; - The old Synagogue it's going to be resurrected, with EU funding, It's a very beautiful building; - "Danube bridge 2" was a great success, the Governments of BG and Romania expected the bridge to repay itself in 20-30 years, it did in only 6 years, that's why the Government started building a highway between Vidin and A2 "Hemus" motorway, which is going to be great for the business in the whole North West region. - Vidin's port is developing really good, breaking records on welcoming more and more cruising ships and tourists. I'm an optimist for the future of this wonderful city, but time will show. :)

You posted this on a Bulgarian site Mike and you know what I think.... I live just outside Vidin and go in regularly, I think to say do not visit this beautiful city is very wrong, yes they are working on the pavements in the Mall, but that is what a quarter of a mile if that?!!! Vidin is beautiful there is alot to see and many beautiful things to see and walks to be had, anyone visiting this lovely area couldnt help but love it. I have lived in several places in Bulgaria and this is classed as one of the poorest but to me the best I have seen, dont knock it till you try it is what I say

Kirstie Blades I absolutely agree with you Vidin is a fantastic place. It’s my intention to show the improvements that are been made in the city. I think they are great. I have been visiting for years but I wouldn’t like this year to be my first visit. Where is your must see place in Vidin that people should visit?

Interesting, Mike. I have a few friends from Bulgaria, but that from that area. The run-down streets aren't a bother to me in general, but is's always good to see the transformations you mentioned. Looked like a great place that will be on my list soon. I was just up the river from you in Budapest, swilling down palinka and uniucm. At least, that's what I was told and what my photos reminded me of :)

Vidin is probably the poorest and lagging city in Bulgaria. It is very gratifying that there is still some development.

@@MikeGoughTV They are now constructing a highway from the "Hemus" highway to Vidin (via Montana and Vratsa). They will connect it directly with the Danube Bridge 2. I think it will have a very positive effect for the whole region and will increase traffic, tourism and investment. The bad thing is that Romanians have no plans to expand their infrastructure after Danube Bridge 2.
