Plovdiv is my home town. And it's true that the thracians started the wine making in the region. The typical Mavrud vine that you make the Mavrud wine from, dates back to thracian times. It was funny how "relaxed" you were after a day of wine tasting around Plovdiv ;)

Little factoid. Bulgaria used to be the world largest wine producer like 50+ years ago or so during communism. We produced 80% of the worlds wine, mainly for the Soviet Union, but also to the UK, France, and Germany. Winston Churchills favorite wine was a Bulgarian red wine he bought tons of it. Only recently after the fall of communism our wine production plummeted drastically, and now we are starting to build it back up. Another factoid, the oldest producers of red wine are the Thracians, and they are the ones who invented the 'Greek' god "Dionysus" who was the God of Fertility and Wine. That is why the region in Bulgaria is called "The Thracian flatlands" which holds the oldest wine making traditions and has the perfect climate and soil for wine growing.

of course its good wine! We are not doing any bulk as back in 80s 90s when we were 4th biggest exporter of bulk wine. Now with around 60 000 ha of vineyards area we focus on premium wines of high quality! I lived in Australia, New Zealand, Germany and USA and have tasted many wines from all around the world. Bulgarian wine is powerful!

Really enjoyed the video. Another fun fact - We modern Bulgarians are a mix of a lot of different peoples who lived in region starting with Thracians, Slavs( we got our language from them), Bulgars (or Proto-Bulgarians -we got our statehood and name from them) Byzantines (we got our religion and early art from them) and Turks (we got our revival architecture and cuisine from them). Genetically we are a mixture of all of them, and you might be wondering why I didn't specify what we got from the Thracians - wine. Thracian culture and religion was centered around wine, in every Thracian mound, in every burial in every temple in every city that was discovered were amphorae with Wine and the appropriate vessels for consuming the said wine. And the discoveries go as far back as 2000 BC. So yeah, Thrace and Thracian lowlands which you visited might as well be the birthplace of the so called "wine culture"

Ignorance is a very dangerous and shameful phenomenon! It's a shame when Bulgarians don't know their own history! Bulgarians are Thracians wrote Roman historians and plenty of historical sources, archeology and Bulgarian folklore and traditions prove that. Slavs do not exist in any historical source and were invented in 18th century by Russian Empress Catherine the Great for geopolitical reasons. Proto-Bulgarians do not exist in any historical source and were invented in 20th century for geopolitical reasons. If you show me one source in which is wrote about Slavs before 18th century and about Proto-Bulgarians before 20 century I will give you 1000 dollars.
