Bulgaria in the EU

Dive deep into Bulgaria's vibrant history, culture, and pivotal role within the European Union. We explore Bulgaria's economic landscape, its status within the EU, and how EU membership has impacted trade, with a detailed look at its exports and imports. Delve into the political scene's evolution with insights into recent elections, governance structure, and Bulgaria's representation in the European Parliament and the European Commission, featuring figures like Mariya Gabriel and Iliana Ivanova. Not to mention other key figures like President Rumen Radev and Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov and Dimitar Glavchev.
This video uncovers the complex relationship between Bulgaria and the EU, the benefits of EU funds in infrastructure and development, the challenges of corruption and mismanagement, and the ongoing issues with Schengen and Eurozone integration. Through this narrative, we highlight the enduring spirit of Bulgaria, its contributions to European unity, and the path ahead in its EU journey.

I voted 4 times and in the last time, we joked with the lady at the polling station that this has become our new "national sport". Yes, we are the poorest, but luckily and ironically the country is in "autopilot" mode. Stable currency, peaceful protests, low debt, etc. Thing is, there is a strong pro-EU, but also pro-Russian sentiment hence the society is definitely divided. We have a saying in Bulgarian "not letting go of the bone" i.e. all of those parties want to have access to EU funds and feed their "close" friends. Thanks for the video, though.

One of the big issues with the EU for Bulgaria is that it has definitely accelerated brain drain out of the country. The most capable did leave before we joined (many of my relatives moved to the USA in the early 00s for example) but joining the EU lowered the bar for immigration, although the ease of it also meant that a lot of the most capable ones would at least stay on the continent. Funnily enough, after living abroad for a few years, I can now see many of the benefits of living in my hometown. Almost all of the Bulgarians, Romanians, and other Balkan people I know here wish to return soon.

As a Bulgarian, im very happy to be part of the EU and the peace that the union has brought to the continent is unbelievable given the history, but the union definitely needs to be reformed. Europe is too weak and dependent on the states, the bureaucracy and barriers to business are awful, and it is insane that the USA is the biggest cultural exporter of the world when everybody here has 1000+ years of history and culture. It's time for us Europeans to take our fate into our own hands and take actions that are according to our actual capabilities.

My one and only visit to Bulgaria in 1989 was fascinating, not long after Zhivkov lost power. I crossed the border by train at Kapicule-Svilengrad, stayed for about a week in Sofia, and was there when Ceaușescu was toppled, but knew nothing of what was going on at the time. Very few people spoke any English and I knew almost no Bulgarian, so I was somewhat isolated. There were hints; I chanced across a big political rally and the only words I recognised, mentioned often, were Podkrepa and Ceaușescu. My guidebook had told me that Bulgaria was a staunch ally of the then Soviet Union, which was the name of the only print magazine I could find in English. It said nothing about political change, but much about tractors and five year plans. As a Westerner I was asked many questions about democracy, how it worked, and how it could be made to work. It would be great to return and see how it has changed. Despite the bad and the ugly, there appears to have been much change for good.

See if we join the euro zone, the salaries we get won't budge (if we join the euro zone, mathematically they should almost double) due to corruption and "good" politics. Which will make it REALLY hard to live with the euro we get. And prices will only rise.

Bulgaria belongs into the EU and should get included in Schengen and the Eurozone. But diligent scrutiny is needed because they face big corruption issues. Only when corruption is cut back to manageable levels, ordinary Bulgarians can benefit from the economic success. Due to ts location, Bulgaria will also have key role in connecting Turkey and the Greek sea ports with Central Europe.

I disagree, modern "pro western" politicians in Bulgaria are either former members of the Mafia, have significant connections to American lobby groups, or are descendants of the communist nomenclature. Bulgaria doesn't need pro-EU or pro-NATO politicians. It needs pro-Bulgaria politicians, and being hostile to Russia is simply against our interests, both economic, cultural, and political.

Poland techinically has advanced as a country, but salaries are still quite low and with the influx of Ukrainians, rents are very high. An apartment in bigger cities would cost you the same as in, say, Spain. There are many Poles that left their country and replaced by Ukrainians or Belarusians.

@@limazulu6660 there is absolutely nothing wrong with migrants coming in to Poland, we need them to work, and Ukrainians are the best that could come since they are similar to Poles in their work mentality. The price of flats in Poland is inflated because half of the sales of flats are for "investment purposes" and they stand empty. Rich people and corporations are buying out whole blocks of apartaments and regular people can't find a reasonably priced flat. It's a nightmare.

Looks can really be quite deceiving.

Romania has double the territory, double or triple the population and the resources in the territory. The main representative of the Eu concerning corruption is Romanian and she did maybe more in Romania as it is more familiar and wants to help, here she said sensible words and nothing like removing deep corruption. Some of the laws concerning business in Romania or majority by words of bulgarian businessmen say they are more friendly for businesses to grow etc.

I will tell you what would have happened if we joined Schengen when we joined the EU. Varna and Burgas ports, together with Greece's Thessaloniki port, would be super busy serving as a hub for goods and resources from Asia. All of our highways would have been complete and connecting the ports to Romania and Serbia. I don't think this would have been just 3-5% GDP increase...

@@stefankatsarov5806 Let me clear this up for you. In 2019, the UK paid a net £9.4 billion into the EU budget, only 0.4% of GDP. According to 2024 estimates (after taking into account the pandemic and energy crises), the UK's GDP is ~6% lower than it would have been if it remained a member of the EU due to the loss of economic activity. This is about £140 billion annually in lost revenue. It costs the UK 14x more to not be a member of the EU than it did to be a member. This means that the economic benefits of the EU single market etc. far outweigh the EU budget contributions. Not to mention, the UK mostly voted to leave due to migration concerns, not economic issues. Ironically, people were mostly concerned about non-European migration, yet the only migration Brexit ended was European migration. Since Brexit, non-European migration has risen rapidly...
