    I got to model a Suka in 1 to 1 scale back in the 1990's. I worked as a volunteer at the USMC Air Ground museum and had something like 2,500 hours disassembling, repairing, and repainting the vehicle. She had sat in the weather for over 40 years and was in pretty ragged shape but turned out quite well. I also did a Zis-3, divisional artillery gun, which was also the piece used on the Suka. The restorations curator was a genius in procuring the things I needed. My dad claimed that the engines were dead ringers for the engines used in 1932 Dodge and I disbelieved him until we found an old repair manual in the restorations library and they were dead ringers. In fact the distributor, coil, and spark plugs were American made. If I never see another sand blaster machine that wouldn't bother me a bit. Semper fi.

    Oh man, I couldn't agree with you more Andy, regarding extra small parts. I'm currently building the Tamiya 1/48 M26 Pershing, and (of course) one of the front grab handles went flying into the ether when I tried to pick it up with my tweezers! Fortunately, I had a spare piece of white metal rod lying around, and I quickly fashioned a replacement. An extra or two sure would have been handy!

    Have watched several of your build videos now, quite well impressed, seem to be pretty well matched in terms of build and paint skills, have a couple of tips for you, first when using a plastic jig, like here for the track sag, try s smear of petroleum jelly or light plastic compatible grease to give a thin film on the jig, it will stop the plastic parts attaching, also try this for large panel construction, dissolve some plasticard scraps into your liquid adhesives, I call it THICKQUID POLY, make it as thick as you like, takes longer to grab and set but ideal for large areas and long joints as makes a strong weld when done, also can be used as a small hole and patch filler..oh and a turntable for when airbrushing, also find it helps to paint pre-assemblies such as lower hulls and wheels separately, then weather in all together.cheers, Rich, ex I.P.M.S and M.A.F.V.A member, but still building...!

    How would you dissolve plastic ? Interested in this technique for seam / hole filling. Also could you melt the spruce tree for hole filling

  • @mrbluesky2050

    @mrbluesky2050

    8 жыл бұрын

    it's really easy, I use scrap plasticard, cut into tiny slivers and simply drop them into a half empty bottle of liquid polystyrene cement, small pieces dissolve quicker, just stir them around for a few hours until they completely dissolve, you'll need to agitate the bottle often to stop it settling and of course if it's too thick add some more 'neat' liquid, or if too thin ad some more plastic scraps, and of course, you can use the sprue trees, this will give you a colour match too, again slice the sprue up small for spped.

    nit picking here but as an ex gunner I hafta say, and this goes for all artillery pieces including tank guns, the breech block and recoil rails would be steel coloured, not black. Ditto the elevation and azimuth quadrants teeth.. note that there would be NO rust or weathering, that was a major rocket up the arse if there was even a hint of discolouration, and woe betide you if you used steel wool as a shortcut. you used a soft cloth and gun oil with muscle power. cleaning the breech and rails was a daily job [more often during fire missions] and you prayed that it didnt rain as the oxidisation process was visible after only a couple of hours. • @cursedmonkey1033
    @cursedmonkey10338 жыл бұрын

    I'd be really interested to see how the figures come out. I know the vehicle is going to be excellent because its Tamiya, but lately the quality of their figures has plummeted. That's a shame because Tamiya have their own niche in the market. There are some companies that produce lower quality kits, and some that make more detailed high quality kits with photo etch ect. Tamiya are in the middle which is perfect for me and why I love them. And since you always get figures with their kits they're suitable as a diorama right out of the box. But if they don't do something about the quality of their figures then that aspect of their appleal will be lost. Maybe they should team up with Master Box and source their figures out to them.

    The way you use Tamiya Extra Thin is not the recommended way. It is advised not to apply to the plastic first and then assemble but to use capillary action with the pieces pressed together. So, why do you not do it this way?

    +Andy's Hobby Headquarters I guessed it would be as otherwise your models would all have fallen apart! But why do you not use the capillary action method? It is less messy especially when you can do on the non-visible side.

    I will usually apply it first to non visible side but sometimes it easier to fit the piece and then apply glue, It doesn't make a mess the shinny spot from the glue goes away when you paint it.

    Those early Russian assault guns have torsion suspension!?

    The SU-76 wasn't exactly early; they didn't reach the front until mid-1943. But yes, they had torsion bar suspension: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SU-76. The KV series of tanks also had torsion bar suspensions, so it wasn't anything new.
