Part 1 of the build from my Basic Armour Modelling series, this time we tackle the Tamiya 1/35 Churchill MK.VII, this tank is an older model from Tamiya, originally dating from 1970s, this kit was reboxed in 1996 with some crew figures and a French farmer. The tracks were also improved in this later release allowing them to be glued rather than joining with heat.
This part takes you through the build and gets us ready for paint.

Being very much a beginner these vids are very useful. It can be quite disheartening to build something and find mould lines, nubs are stuff on builds. Finding out experts sometimes miss them and then how to correct them is reassuring. It is also good to know that these kits don't always fit together as they should, although, getting it right is part of the fun. I like the way you show these problems and the simple solutions, it is very helpful.

Its very interesting to note, that the humble or not so humble jerry can was dismissed by the Americans but adopted by the Brits after being noticed in Norway in 1940 where it received the name as we now know it, Jerry Can. It was an American, Paul Pleiss who had three originals and the plans, who supplied the US and again later the Brits with a sample jerry can and the plans to make them. They where in mass production by the spring of 1943 and all made in the UK for British and American forces. I personally have handled many of these cans when filling the Centurion and Chieftain Tanks when on exersize in West Germany 1969-70ish. Something that's quite an addition to model tanks.

Hi, used to build a lot of WWII tanks, vehicles and soldiers in 1/72 as a young teenager, now many moons later I'm coming back to the hobby but in 1/35 scale and I see I lost a lot of my practice, and my vision is not as it was either which make things harder but anyhow, found your series and I like that you're taking it in slow steps - I can see where I can improve in my building though my biggest issue was always the painting and weathering. I moved from enamel to acrylics. Looking forward to seeing your next videos as there is always good tips to pick up from watching your videos. Thank you for sharing.

I have a special affinity with this tank My grandfather was a Crocodile driver in the war he didn't talk much about his time but he loved that tank although he had some horror stories to tell if it was not for the Churchill Croc me and my son might not be here. he bought me the Croc tamiya model when I was 10 i made a complete arse of it with Gloss hombrol paints but it was my first tamiya kit.

nice video build About the fillers: You can use classic Tamiya filler (or any lacquer surfacers from Tamiya/Gunze) the same way and clean them with lacquer thinner afterwards without damaging the plastic (they take a bit longer to wipe off though). Just don´t use Acetone but Tamiya lacquer thinner / gnuze thinners (just not the rapid one). And they are more durable then Perfect Plastic Putty.

A REALLY useful series ! re starting modelling after a lifetime ..begining in the 60's ...I'm focusing on a single photo I could find tagged (43rd Wessex Div) " 179th field Reg RA on way to Cheux".....my Dad's regiment . So it has a Quad converion , a universal carrier , a light Bedford soft top truck & way off what looks like a Churchill . Two other photos (not of the 179th) has Crusader AA & a U C pulling a Anti tank gun . If THAT's not enough for a stash....my dad was actually in the RA "signals" laying cable from a U C ..so ..trying to find the markings for the Crusader AA RA , & a "Signals" UC RA which I might have to fake what that would look like .....bought a spray set....think I'm in a modellers "world of pain " !

I'm much the same as Mark.. Or at least I consider myself to be., and would echo his comments. Keeping it simple, and being honest about mistakes and workarounds makes your videos particularly enjoyable. I also like the way you have lifted things as you progress. Shows how simple things can improve the outcome both in terms of aesthetic and accuracy. I suffered the dreaded AMS for a while and only recently came back to a more simple & "honest" (for me at least) modelling. It's put the joy back into what is, after all a hobby. It we can't enjoy it, then we're doing it wrong. Thank you and long may you continue.

Also, did not like Tamiya's suggestion for the British paint job, so kit been sitting on shelf for about 6 years. Watching this video, and part 2, got me interested in finally finishing this kit. Chose an over complicated Tiger tank build, painted Tamiya paints with brushes, basically i built a mess and got disheartened. This series has relit the fire and im going to follow you starting with the Pz ii. One question tho - do you have a video on choosing an airbrush - i obv need one if i want a decent result. I have a problem. This has been bothering me for a day or two now. It's the armor plate in the front of the Churchill (about 10:10). It partially covers the hatch, on the left when you face the tank. Is this a design flaw? Does the armor plate move?? This bothers me!! Really enjoy your Step by Step reviews. You've helped this beginner a lot!! Best wishes.... Ax
