I'm 70 and have mobility challenges. I'm so grateful for some of the things I did back in my 30s. Perennial flower beds, buying a house with few steps, washer & dryer in the bathroom. I wasn't thinking ahead, I just got lucky.

Great job with your rough in wiring work. When you finish a circuit check it with your multimeter and make sure it has a ground connection. Very important for you and your family’s safety. I’m not an electrician but I’ve put in new circuits with a electrician and he taught me to check for ground. You have a beautiful family and I know you do good work and provide for them. Thank you for another great video. Sorry for the long rant. Jerry D. Western Massachusetts.

I hear you about the decking!!! We are currently in the process of restaining our decks before winter and we've got 540sq ft of deck! Looking back, I wish too that we would have just started with composite deck, but MAN!!!!....it's like 3x the cost- and now we're retired folks and too cheap for a composite deck do-over, nor do we want to pay someone to come out and re-stain it for us! We just got the sanding and powerwashing done, and I was able to remove a lot of the redwood stain we had used in the past with sanding, so I've decided that it's just going to get done with a CLEAR waterproofing stain, (deck boards are redwood). I can just wash the deck off next year (and every year from now on), with a graden hose sprayer and re-apply the same stuff- won't need to powerwash it OR sand it ever again! Give it another coat in the spring, and another in the fall until we move, I guess!! LOL!! Cabin looks great! I can't wait to see it moved to the spot you created for it in the mountains! Love the videos and look forward to them every week!

The screw was in the way, it's not a mess, it just is what it is. After changing the structure. If this can cause instability, then it is fixed with two additional screws above and below the box. Sometimes things have to be redone, that's part of the process and completely normal!

FYI composite decking is extremely hot to walk on, and it fades in the sun. If you ever have to replace any of the boards you can not match the color. Of course it also costs more. FYI

If you want to cut down on maintenance of your decks and railings, switch to Spar varnish. It's a marine product that people use to preserve wood finishes on boats. It's easy to find at your local big box hardware store in the paint dept. It will last a lot longer than 1 year.

Yes anyone who has the budget for composit decking thats building a deck should definitely do that. I dont believe its just cedar because ive had to restain decks quite often. The brutal summer sun and rain and winters like that bad ice storm yall had a few yrs ago can really age it quicker. So smart idea to use composite decking at your mountain cabin. I absolutely love the color of the cabin and the black window trim.its going to look amazing in the woods at mountain property. You really thought that out well. Home away from home is going ro be so cool and what a wondeful place for the kids to grow up in. It amazes me how much spenser knows and everything he can do. He reminds me of Trent of Trent & Alley and also Josh of WWOG Josh & Erin. Very talented guys and gals too. Thanks cant wait for next week. Those kids adorable .so cute 😊

I can sympathize and relate to how hot it can get while working inside a container. It's fall and the high was only in the low 80's when I had to rest my hand on the south facing wall, to catch my balance while working on a ladder and slightly burned that hand. I was curious why it felt so hot, so I went in the house and grabbed my temp gun. The metal on that wall read 126 degrees inside the container. Keep up the great work.

Cooler temperatures but still hot inside the box. Planning for outlets and switches. Thinking ahead about drywall, taping and accessibility. Applying some lessons learned from previous builds. Some high traffic areas exposed to the elements, fade faster. Just have to recoat as required. The same occurs for stained boat decks and trim exposed to the sun, salt and sea. Small deck and railing looks good once done.

Composite is plastic. People are generally trying to reduced their plastic consumption. After all plastic is in our water and in our bodies. Using natural materials you truly understand what it means to have a home. What it cost in the way of time for upkeep. Your using solar, your collecting rainwater your going to use plastic. There is a disconnect there. Good luck. It's your home. I wish you the best.

You are doing a great job. love watching the kids helping their dad. The deck looks great but I think there is a stain used on boats that would last longer. 👍🙂

composite decking has its disadvantages too. Being in Texas and the heat we get makes the composite very hot. The composite will start to sag. They recommend 14" centers for the trusses. With the weather here 12" is better. Plus with the heat of the summer you can't walk on it barefoot because it will burn your feet.

My cedar deck is 31 years old. This fall I have to replace some or most of the deck boards. I've installed composite decking for others but I would never have it at my place. Good cedar stain, like TWP, every 3-5 years depending on direct sunlight, and I've gone 7 years once, makes a big difference. I'm not sponsored by anyone

I ran into that screw issue before. I waffle cut (Cu the wood on top into waffle like slices) the wood around the screw on top of it and used a chisel to remove the waffles. The I took a saws-all and cut down and through the screw and the rest of the wood. I never even considered drilling a hole to get to it.

The one Con to the composite decking is that is gets very HOT if the sun is shining on it to the point that you can not walk on it bare footed. And up here in MN it is very slippery in the winter when it gets cold.

Definitely two coats of a marine clear coat after staining your dec will have it looking amazing for many years.

Like a Classic Wood Sailboat, The Wood is part of the beauty and charm. Some finishes can stand up to punishment that will last longer. Just think of how you feel every time you see it when it is done, it's worth the extra work. Like most things in life, there is a cost and if the (thing) is worth it. With all that metal, the natural addition of a wood deck and the lower siding fit like the last piece of a big puzzle. Plus in a few years, that can be a summer (spring, fall) project for the kids to help with.

Can’t wait to see this one ready. I will probably copy some from you guys. I’m building a rental unit in my back yard out of a container too this spring summer coming.
