    Thanks for making the lower surface areas lighter than the panels! You are the first person I've seen catch that correctly. As for which way to paint the model, per the studio model or screen appearance, since this model was based on the screen version which was flipped from the studio version, I'll probably for for screen colors as I won't be able to match it up to the studio model with everything on the wrong side.

  • @johnstedman4075
    @johnstedman40754 жыл бұрын

    You did a good job with that. I built one recently and also found that the fit was not perfect in places. This is noticable because it is such a small model that it gets examined in ultra close up. I ended up gluing the outer shell parts and doing some filling, which wasn't easy because the kit joints are skewed against the panel grids. I hope Bandai do a larger kit of this at some stage, because the intricacy of the unfinished sphere is intriguing. Maybe I would light that with tiny blue flickering LEDs to replicate welding torches in action!

  • @johnstedman4075

    @johnstedman4075

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@omikron6218 yes, where a welding torch is seen directly I think a fibre optic strand would catch the eye more effectively. In the background, where for example you only wanted to suggest the reflection of a torch against a bulkhead, maybe an LED would give a more realistic "flickering glow" effect. I will experiment with this because I have always been fascinated with lifelike "under construction" models. Probably because I grew up reading the "Eagle" comic, which had a cutaway colour poster of a machine as its weekly centre spread.

    Colin Johnston - Just wanted to comment on this; did a build with my nephew, and it was a dry build (no paint) with just a black wash on top, and still had the gaps. Was hoping to hear how he fixed those gaps so I could do it on my personal model! Lol

    Yeah would be very tricky to build first then paint, especially the interior sections.

    What glue did you use for final assembly and did you have to remove any paint, prior to gluing or did you mask off the points of glue contact?

    I don’t have any experience in spray paints. So can someone explain why you put multiple layers of different paint? Wouldn’t the first one, if you got the spots covered, cover up the original structure?

    It requires patience. Some parts are very thin and can break. The deflector shield domes for example mine broke off. But it's worth it. I love the details.

    Very cool model. Kinda of a bummer they textured the surface but I guess it would be a pain to mask off and add all the surface detail.

    Nice paint job mate, I have this kit, shame though about the gaps, Bandai usually don't make these sorts of design flaws. How would you fix the gaps?

  • @modelchili

    @modelchili

    It would need to fill them in with some putty. The only reason I didn't is that the parts wiggle around a bit, which would make the putty crack eventually.

    Do you think the pre-painting might have made the gaps a bit worse? I was very sceptical about your approach to painting dark to light, but I have to say it does look really, really good.

    What kind of brushes do you use. I have spent good money on brushes and still they never paint as well as what your using? Can anyone recommend good fine detail brushes? Thanks.

    I never really pay attention to the brand, I don't even use the ones in this video any more. I just find the cheapest smallish single brushes from art shops.

    It's a cool model. I'm a bit disappointed that they didn't try to disguise the join lines better by making more irregular cuts following the contours of the panels, I found the dish the most difficult to try to paint like the reference.

    Dry brushing the incomplete floor levels pieces would work better and faster than picking out individual levels with a tiny brush.

    Should have been 1/144 at a minimum so you could do a diorama using the other 1/144 ships Bandai made.
