Vader’s flag ship was awesome. I was disgusted how that ship died. American battleships were built with emergency steering should the bridge be damaged or destroyed and with a ship as large as the super Star destroyer there is no excuse for not having emergency steering control inside the main hull.

Tim Collins no Nazis, they were patients, doctors and nurses aboard the super star destroyer mercy hospital ship. I don’t trust a thing those traitorous evil rebels say about the empire that was operating for the people and by the people and at the will of the people under rule of law to benefit all life in the universe with peace, mercy and prosperity.

@@t.adamcollins2162 the Nazis were a particular organisation that was destroyed in 1945 on Earth. They had very specific beliefs. The people that crewed the fictional Super Destroyer Executor were from a fictional organisation called The Empire. Other than being a fascist regime they have no further sumilarities.

One of the design briefs for the Executor was "no identifiable kit parts" which is why you can't see any. Sadly I can't find the article I read to confirm this for you. I know much of the upper superstructure detail was hand-cut styrene sheeting, and that the model cost over $100,000 dollars to build at the time.

  • @modelchili

    @modelchili

    3 жыл бұрын

Yeah you can certainly see the stacks of sheeting.

  • @grimjimc

Bandai did their homework on this one, and there are a few identifiable kit parts, even at this tiny scale. At about 2:20, you can see, toward the top, a Marder hull flanked by the mudguards from a Churchill tank, at about two-thirds of the way down, a pair of M1 Abrams turrets, and under them, two more Churchill mudguards and the base of a Panther turret (also used on the Millennium Falcon miniatures). I love that Bandai has such an obsessive attention to detail.

  • @modelchili

I picked up this kit the other day. My paints mainly consist of Tamiya and what I have over of testers. While all the stores now stock the Valejho and AK paints, I’m a little hesitant on investing on a whole new set of colours. So I’m going to match my Tamiya to what you’ve used. Very impressed with all their “mini” kits.

I kinda wished they made the dang thing a bit larger though. Seriously, one of the most iconic vehicles in Star Wars and the difference is a small kit with a "decent" price tag between a humongous LEGO kit that sells for an arm and a leg - nothing in between. I've got a few Star Trek kits and they're even more abundant in every size scale you can find than a SSD from Star Wars. That's my one and only gripe, yet the kit in the video is probably one of the better ones out there that doesn't break your wallet.

  • @modelchili

Check out the Star Wars Armada SSD, it's a wargaming miniature so it's not 100% accurate, but it's a decent sized model that could easily be repainted.

Another great vid! Going from an almost 3 meter filming model down to an almost 10 cm model kit, the likelihood of being able to replicate anything from a kitbash used for the original would be (I believe) impossible. Looks like Bandai did a phenomenal job with this kit at this scale. Much better than the giant panel lines on their Death Star. Again, great walk-through and great build!

Other than tabletop games, you have to build your own super star destroyer. It's funny -- they really haven't done much merchandise-wise with this ship. I think they could have made it in a larger scale but given how basically shit the Star Wars merchandise market has gone to because of the Mouse it's understandable any remaining SW licensees are anxious when they put out new product. You can't blame Bandai for keeping the kits small and not going crazy on cranking out 3-ft long model kits. If there wasn't a large fan base for the TOS Enterprise, I doubt Polar Lights would be making those 1/350 scale/3ft Enterprises, either... It's kind of a rough time for ALL the major science fiction franchises which aren't Gundam. We all know the reason why they're struggling has less to do with age and more to do with how these TV shows and movie series have been managed in the last 7-8 years. The corporations are forgetting they have to produce entertainment for fans and not to use these shows as blatant propaganda.

There's a link to Amazon at the top of the comments, you can usually find Bandai kits there.

The Tamiya TS-13 Clearcoat doesn't affect the Vallejo acrylics when you spray it over them?

Very enjoyable video. I've always loved the Executor since I first saw her utterly eclipse the Star Destroyers in TESB in the 80's. I don't think anyone does a larger scale of this ship unfortunately though.

Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah it's strange there hasn't been many attempts at making a scaled replica. There's been a few plastic versions but not much when it comes to scale models you build from scratch.

the reason why people think you needed to add panel lining is if you were trying to make a space ship from a fantasy story, there would be depth and shadows in various panels. if you were trying to simulate a studio model then you be right to not panel line it. two entirely different view points

It just looks blue in the movie because of the color grading. The miniature it is based on is grey in real life.

@@pho3nix- Dear, I saw this model, and I mean the real one used on the movie, and is not just grey. I'm also know Lorn Peterson from ILM, he sent me a paper with the right color airbrushed on, is much blue/grey than grey.

The problem with Super Star Destroyer model kits, either resin garage or official model kits is that they're either too large or too small, i'd love one that's more that 1 foot long but no more that 2 feet.

I watched this and went out and bought it, fine. But I had no notion of how out of condition, so beginner level, so not ready for how difficult all that is. I hadnt built a model since my late teens maybe early 20 and three decades plus of not doing something like this completely threw me off. I had no idea and no chance. I've had to come back this vid and accepted I ain't gonna be doing any of that, I only bought two colours and even with reading glasses and a magnifying glass I still will never get into those parts. Now I got to admire my man here that's no ot some average hobby man's can just pick up and start all of a sudden.
