Honestly... Dani could get some 6500k (close to full spectrum) under-counter lights and they would work just fine in that space, and they would be reasonably priced. She would have so many options for types of lights too, whether it be strip lights, spotlights, little showcase lights. You could put plastic rain gutter sprayed black around them. So many options. The installation would be the difficult part. Many Fishtube aquarists are switching to this now.

First off, the room is looking awesome. As for suggestions for lighting, check out LED strip lights. They come on rolls, you can cut them to any size you want, There's 65k lumen options that are also water resistant (ip65?). You can also out them on timers/dimmers. There are blue, green and red options. I installed 2 rows of white and 1 row of color for my 20L. It is slowly growing dwarf baby tears and it does pearl without liquid ferts.

I used pressure treated 4x6s, definitely my favorite to work with - I used 4x4s in the tent but since the shed has longer runs between blocks and will have bigger tanks, wanted the extra strength..and I was avoiding adding another step on the To Do list, stain racks. Win win!

@@danidoeslife2290 Wow, 4x6's! That's some serious heft. I always see 2x4's and 2x6's being used normally. I guess the extra thickness and the stain you used made me think you must have gotten them at some specialty lumbar yard. You really do some great work and have an aesthetic eye for things. I need to work out so I can try some 4x6's for a future project. :P Lol.

Danni (sic) consider taking metal guttering, used for rainwater removal. Turn upside down screw it in to the bottom of shelving. If need be you can spray paint it or simply building a box out of very thin plywood. You might look into horticultural plant lights but you might find someone who know LED lighting and cut to size. As a horticulturist retired I want to know where you got those three prong lights. Thanks so much. Good luck.

Beamworks has some decent lights, all different sizes, not sure what you looking to spend on lights. Also Amazon has and diamond plate and black shop light you can link up to 4 together. I know this has been out for a few weeks now, but just some ideas. Not sure if your looking for top mount lights or something that hangs from above, could also mount the lights, in between the wooden beams so you can't really see them at all.

Not sure if this would work but you could cut a 2x2 lumber to size. Paint it black and hang it above the tanks. Then buy an LED strip light. They usually come as 8 footer but they do have longer ones out there. They light strips are not expensive for what you want, some are app controlled, and easy to work with. They’ll glue and attach to the lumber very easily. And you could cut the light strips to size as well so you don’t have to worry about your odd measurements. The only thing I would worry about is the PAR for your plants. Hope this helps.

Cool build, and you know I’m a fan of concrete blocks for racks. I question the structural strength of the blocks when laid on their sides though rather than stacked like they were intended for (like a wall) with the openings up and down.

    @danidoeslife2290

Yes I know you rock the block racks too! Loved your upgrade as well. I too questioned this, the original design had all the blocks the regular way. With the bottom row 4 beams wide, footprint wouldn't allow for the 240g at the back wall, and unfortunately the beams I had only fit in the blocks one way. Was definitely part of the re-doing the racks 18,000 times lol. The bottom rows where the blocks are long ways have additional reinforcement, and the entire rack is attached to the back wall. Fingers crossed 🤞

Dani, Bob, That is a very cool space!!! Just need a place to sit but I bet that is coming in the future. For lights, I'd recommend the Finnex Stingray, the original ones that the Co-op still carries. They are very low profile, black, easy to mount, and with a little modification dimmable which is what I do in my fishroom. I don't give out a lot of invites, but if you want to see a whole fishroom with them you guys could come over and see before you buy. Two of the smart plug timers runs all the lights in my fishroom. The dimmable part could be a how to video itself but as we know can't be on the co-op channel. Then maybe we raid a local warehouse for the lights??

Nicrew Classic LED's. They're full-spectrum RBG and cheap. I've got about 6 or 8 different tank lights and they're my favorite so far. They'd be better with built-in timers, but they have timers you can buy for like $12 each and put in-line. I think the biggest light is like 54", but that would I'm sure light a 6' section , maybe more depending on what you end up needing. With no C02 up there, I'm thinking it would work. Love that fish room. I'm working on mine and you guys gave me some great ideas. Thanks!

For an unconventional/cheap idea for the middle and bottom row of tanks you could use under cabinet lighting from Walmart. Specifically I’m talking about the “Hyper Tough LED slim under cabinet light” that they sell for $10 for a 24” fixture. They’re not black, but you can mount them under the shelves and then at the front edge of the shelf you put a piece of trim so you can’t see the light. In my head I’m imaging something like a 1x3 mounted at the front edge and painted/stained a dark color so it looks like a stripe and goes with your light and dark contrast look going on. For the pro’s of the fixture: they’re cheap, you can daisy chain them, and I have been successful at growing low light plants with them for the last 2 years Cons: extra work for the trim solution and you would have to paint the cords black to fit your aesthetic

I have a solution for your lighting problem, but it might take some work. You can buy black plastic rain gutters, and then screw single tubed shop lights (they do link together, so you won't have to use a plug for each light). After that, you can attach the fixture in between the wood, so you don't see the panel at all, making the fish tank stand look completely clean. I have found those type of lights to be perfectly fine for plants!

Why not scope out rolls of strip LED lighting that you can cut to fit. Might be a bit more expensive than shop lights, but should be way less than Fluval. The nice thing is that they can be fit exactly. Also, you can control these LEDs

LED strip lights would work well. You can cut them to length and adjust the colours. Also they are able to be hidden behind the wooden beams or put a little black plastic/metal angle strip in front to hide them. Also very power efficient.

Home depot has 3 ft led shop lights on sale right now for $10 while they are white i tuck mine up in between the supports from the rack over it so you can't see them. But they would be easy to spray just pop the plastic tube and led strip out and spray the housing. They do come linkable but they cost alot more. I simply plug mine into a couple of power strips and plug those into a couple wifi timers and they all run automated with the app and if I need them on for any reason their super simple to turn on in the app and it won't mess up the automation.

I saw a couple other comments with the same idea, and it's what I would do. You can run the lights in between the gap in the wood supports, provided it's wide enough. Not only would it be hidden, but it would solve the length of the lights being too long for the sections. It's looking great in there! 😊

Great timing with this video. I've been so curious about how the fish shed was coming a long. Looks like a lot has gotten done, but a lot is left to do. It's really admirable how you're taking your time with it. Best to work out all the kinks now before all the tanks are flooded and full of life. Plus setting things up exactly how you want is part of the fun. Wish I had some awesome idea with lights. Since it's such a large area to cover I'd go with shop lights and led bulbs, but like you said the lengths you need aren't exactly standard and it would be nice to paint less... Like I said I'm no help. Lol. Maybe Dean could suggest something after some thought. Maybe Bob could facilitate that... Love the 75 gallon "island" plan. Everything looks so great already. So excited for you. Can't wait to see Bob's fishroom as well! So YOU'RE to blame for the long wait. Lol. Just kidding. Can't wait to see that large tank in the shed though.

A new job mid summer through some wrenches in for sure, and the kinks along the way but I love this DIY stuff! Even no help is helpful, someone to brainstorm too! I am definitely leaning towards the led linkable linear ballast lights, just honing it down to good reviews/price. And yes! Definitely part to blame for not moving the 240, but what a nice Christmas gift for everyone (bright side 😉 lol)

Nice build! As others have said, the led rope lights might be your best option. You could hide it so that it sits on the tank if you want with "black cable cover". My main concern is that the leds would put out enough heat to melt it (doubtful though). Or obviously mount to to the rack above, the black cable cover might make everything a little more sleek which seems like what you are going for.

  • @danidoeslife2290

Thank you, and yes! Definitely don't want any melting, so am looking to mount lighting in between the 4x6s on each lower level. To hide the lighting a bit, but then need strong enough LEDs to span the drop.

@@danidoeslife2290 Exactly! I wish I could say that I've tested some rope leds with that half conduit piece, but I have not. Most stronger leds will get fairly warm, especially if they don't have the metal cooling "fins". The rope leds do NOT get that warm, but aren't powerful enough to have on the rack above. If you want some areas for terrestrial plants on the rack, I would go with something a bit more powerful (examples: strong led grow light, track lighting, high output florescent)
