If I had the budget, I would go with aluminum. Love it!
I have an aluminium hulled Koopmans 35 from 1982. The only corrosion is from some standing water, and dissimilar metals from the bolts holding down the wooden deck. I chose aluminium over GRP after working in the marine industry, all the boats meant to last were aluminium.

Boat looks fantastic! Makes me think of looking into an aluminum hull boat. That boat show looks overwhelming, but it would be a good place for ideas. Thanks guys, good travels!
Thanks for sharing your journey. Aluminum has many advantages over technical plastics and wood. If your budget allows, aluminum is definitely worth considering.

Such a beautiful boat
it's absolutely gorgeous, I think that aluminium is the way to go if you are sailing worldwide, unfortunately unless I find a good used aluminium boat I will have to settle for fiberglass, watching your sailboat come to life is amazing, it must be sucha treat!
They seem so ruggedly made, and the craftsmanship is very high. I'm no sailer, but if they could build one with an actual living area, as a kitchen table wouldn't cut it for me as the only living space, I would definitely consider an aluminum Sailboat if I had the money, especially when you see the build process has we have here..
I would not have considered an aluminium build boat until that is I’ve seen yours being built, now it would get at least even consideration to other types. Thankyou for sharing.

Aluminum is recognized as a great material and make for sturdy boats. We many times hear about nightmare corrosion stories (possibly more related older Aluminum boats with lower quality materials). I wonder if you have to have stronger controls with guests and metal tools placement to ensure you don't go through corrosion problems. I wonder how aluminum and stainless steel parts come together (or not). Could you create an episode dedicated to this theme and actions needed to ensure a long lasting Aluminum boat? Thanks for sharing the journeys.

Looking forward to your video on corrosion protection. I have considered an AL boat before when one built by Betts in the US was for sale. Impressive. After spending the last couple of weeks in the yard with the mast pulled and addressing corrosion (not the reason we pulled the mast, just an opportunity to do some maintenance while re re-rigging) I’m very interested to see what the coating and protection processes will be for your vessel. As for winches I strongly recommend Andersen from Denmark, they are simply the best ones.
What a process! It will be so cool to see the new Distant Shores when she splashes. I wonder, will you bring her to Annapolis this coming October?
Three rudders! Assuming all three are interconnected, that means you always have two in the water even when heeled. So apart from directional thrust under power, does the builder make any claims about performance under sail using this system? Wonderful quality aluminium work by those Dutch builders too!
Quality
Like from Catamaran Navigator 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻⛵
Nice to see the boat coming along! Aluminum, absolutely ! Robust and a much better sustainable option. Why did you choose aluminium water tanks? Is it really the best solution for water ? Hope to meet you in northern/arctic waters in a close future. Your boat and ours seems to be on a very similar planning (our boatyard is finishing inside insulation , now.)
@DistantShoresTV
Жыл бұрын
The integral tanks are definitely best for performance as they put all the weight of the water as low as possible. The tanks then add to the structural strength as well. Tanks must be properly coated inside and that will be very carefully done with the correct coatings in the paint shop.
With the ever increasing variety of boats being created, my fantasy boat would be a mono hull motorsailer with two masts (ketch rigged) and a water line of 65 feet ([8 squared] 64 x 1.333 for a hull speed of 10.667 kts) with a diesel engine (with two high capacity alternators) that is reliable, has worldwide parts availability, and can efficiently move the boat at nine (9) kts; and an over all length of perhaps 68 to 70'. It would have fuel to motor at least fifteen hundred miles. More refrigeration for food than the law allows (at least 20 cu. ft of 40 degree Fahrenheit volume and 15 cu. ft. of freezer volume) and a galley that a chef would envy. A place for a tender of 14'. Three staterooms and at least two heads with dry showers. Six foot six inch (6' 6") head room every where and an insulated (both thermal and sound) hull; and A/C in all enclosed spaces. Add in solar panels, lithium iron battery bank (with a twenty four (24) hour capacity at maximum load, and all the rectifiers/controllers which would be needed. As to the hull material, the three that come to mind are fiberglass, aluminum, and steel. I would also want a protected rudder and propeller design. But in reality I will never buy a boat and live on it. So thank you for putting out these wonderful videos that you do, so that I can vicariously share some aspects of what you do.
As a welder for 21 years, i would love to build one of these... i could imagine making it my last project, a 57 or 60ft live aboard....
Distant Shores. If I would get in Sailing the Aluminum Sailboat ⛵ May be the way . I will wait to see them Paint and Protect your Sailboat. Just to old to teach a old Dog New Tricks in learning to Sail. But I make a great sailor to mop the Deck and do Dishes. Gory peace be With You
Awesome! If I had a gazillion dollars I would be in.
What work will be done to her regarding engine room noise , curious ?
Your aluminium yachts coming along well! That level of euripean craftsman ship must cost a fortune though?
For now what is the composition of your storage tanks and fittings. Later as the build progresses, main engine design (hybrid, generator, diesel), prop size and selection, optional hydro & wind vane, solar.
The only disappointing thing is that you only do one video a month, I wish you do one or more videos a week AND PLEASE make them longer 🙏 ❤ Thanks a million in advance and kindest regards 😊. ✌❤🍀
Oh good. It’s almost finish. It’s time for 6th, 7th, 8th boat.
I knew an excellent marine engineer who specialised in welding, repairing and building in aluminium. Electrolysis is such a problem in high salt content areas ie tropics that his personal yacht was grp and he would never consider aluminium.
You may have mentioned it in a previous episode, but how thick is the boat skin and is it rated for ice? Which grade (5083, 5454, 6061) was chosen and why? These may have been decisions the boat designers made and not choices you had control over, but I read a lot of confusing information on property choices concerning aluminum plate. Likely it’s several combinations of different grades depending on the structural application, but I’d be curious as to know why.
Wowowow
Just curious is it oxidation that forms on the outside of these over time? I’ve seen a couple Garcia that look kinda chalky almost ?

How does aluminum fare in more tropic climes?
Aluminium is great. We have a 50ft aluminium diesel/electric hybrid. It is light, fast and best of all cool in hot weather. Corrosion is an issue with all boats and we've had issues after a rock strike in a storm where we couldn't pull the boat out for repairs for some months. The lead & the aluminium in the keel don't get along. Big job to fix it but not totally unexpected with over 9ft of draft. She's fine now. Wouldn't buy fibreglass or carbon in a warm climate like in the equatorial regions.

@@vitaliybliznuk9136 Hull acts as a giant heat sink. Aluminium seems to send the hot & suck the cool out of the water. Full aluminium is soooo much more comfortable. Even on the hottest days we just use pop in some flexible plastic 'flaps' to direct the slightest breeze in through the smaller windows & never think of aircon. The deck temp is virtually always barefoot comfy. It doesn't stop things on deck heating up. Even with a decent number of solar panels flat on the deck the cabin below doesn't get warm. The flip side is in arctic weather it sucks the heat out of the boat, but insulation is always needed there along with diesel heating.
It will be completed when the amas are built
