I not often jealous when seeing boat projects or even new boats. But I am jealous about Distant Shores IV because everything is so well thought out, it's a very elegant boat, and you people have style! Great to see this progress.

Such a great job and process, so thoughtful. Watching this in comparison to Sailing La Vagabonde’s new trimaran is like comparing a PHD in sailing to a weekend course. Riley and Elenya don’t’ even know how to handle those new boat, making their future for their family so worrisome. I’m not worried about you guys at all.

Sheryl & Paul... drop jaw... I can't come across words other than: SUPER BOAT...! Very impressed with the battery bank... I looked up Super-B and I see that brand is not available to me... just as well... I'm done with the repower all electric... And, your PV arch makes mine look fairly puny... I have to admit modern E-tech is working on my boat... My marina EL bill for '23 was very low at about $0.65/day... All the best to you two and looking forward to the maiden shake down voyage... With their building process using a side-by-side mock-up space to build the woodwork, I am somewhat surprised that it didn’t already have the finish (varnish; etc.) applied BEFORE the woodwork modules were installed.

After watching, Vernon's, Learning By Doing channels episode yesterday of Peter Smith's Kiwi Roa, the two ways of thinking are vast. The Kiwi Roa is absent of solar. Peter has traveled on her over 80,000 nautical miles since 1994. Many of his miles in upper latitudes. He's a fascinating salty sailor as stubborn as they come. It's worth a watch for those interested in how such a feat is accomplished. Thanks for sharing your choices. I'm equally enamored by both you and Peter Smith's adventures.

Things are coming along nicely. I love that the manufacturer is taking your input seriously, not only because it'll be your boat, but also because you have many years of experience. That matters. I'm 65 and have been sailing since I was 15, and have spent the last 30 years doing high latitude sailing and boating, so I'm well aware of what does and what doesn't work. I love the raised pilot house, the retractable centerboard keel, an aluminum hull, twin rudders, etc. This will literally be a go anywhere boat, especially when it comes to there being ice in the water. I'm not sure if your prop is skeg hung or how it's protected but that's usually a big concern. There's a lot of what we call 'bergie bits' in the water and hitting a larger one w/ a prop is a surefire way to sheer a sheer pin or shaft key! Will be curious about the hybrid drive, but I wonder if you're going to also use both solar and wind power generation? In higher latitudes, like here in Juneau, Alaska, it can be quite cloudy for long periods and while solar does work here, it doesn't work as well as in areas you're used to sailing, so wind generators make up the difference. Some of them are very quite too. Plus you'll probably do some regeneration from the hybrid drive while sailing, etc. Sailing is the high art of boating, and high latitude sailing is the high art of sailing. The weather is a challenge, the water will kill you, the winds can be fickle, and the distances are great, but the scenery is definitely world class.

Question about the placement of the Combi throttle on the left side of that panel. Seems the throttle handle protrudes high enough over the panel, (as demonstrated at about 10:56 mark,) so as to potentially have a sheet get caught on it perhaps, coming off that winch on the port side helm station. Will the combi throttle be mounted lower to help reduce the chance of a snag/break at an inopertune moment? She's looking great though, it must be said.

  • @DistantShoresTV

I suspect there would be risk of minor damage and needed repair if the prefabricated wood surfaces were varnished before installation while there is still work going on in the hull but we will ask the builder. Interesting question. 👍🏻

@@DistantShoresTV systems for cruising boats should be simple as possible - you know that. And yet the electric drive introduces a 'boatload' of complexity and weight - for what benefit? Two hours of electric range? LOL. Electric drive would be great for a little canalboat in Holland, to cruise the Plassen and have a picnic on the Eiland, then go home and recharge on shorepower. But for an ocean cruiser? Doesn't make sense. Energy density of diesel is more than two orders of magnitude greater than LiFePO4. (~46MJ/kg vs .37MJ/kg) Even with the inefficiencies of IC engines, Diesel is the superior energy store. And you're not getting rid of the diesel!! So instead of maintaining one power system, now you have to maintain two, and sacrifice the weight and space. If you wanted avante-garde, a diesel electric system would have been interesting, giving flexibility for engine mounting, and probably reduced vibration. I suspect you know all that, but there was 'promotional incentives' to be had, and there is woke fashion that a certain breed of Canadians can't shake. Recharging your 'environmental' battery bank with diesel power is just classic. Well the power-electronics can always be ripped out, and the rest of your boat is truly awesome. I enjoy your videos and wish you fair winds. 😉

It's a shame that you don't show more of the real Netherlands while you're there. Your boat is being built in Friesland, a remote province where the main language is Frisian and not Dutch. The province of Friesland is not really a reflection of the major part of the Netherlands. It's empty, boring and the people there are very stiff. Dutch people come there once in a while to go on holiday, but otherwise have no business there. Show cities like Utrecht, Den Haag, Leiden or Haarlem, they are much more beautiful and reflect the real Netherlands.
