Ofc you can put ACL race bearings, they just have higher tolerance value which covers all colors/grades of OEM bearings. Typical ACL (or actually all aftermarket) bearings just have tolerances set a bit more loose, but we are still talking 0.0xx values. Not in mind it's depending on engine builder prefference, and so on. Not saying you are doing it wrong, but "standard" ACL bearings would do their job as fine as OEM bearings, also race bearings are usually tri-metal and have higher wear and seizure ressistance, while most of oem are just bi-metal. Not to mention with all new stuff and technology, they have polymer coating etc. while most of OEM bearings for those beloved 20-30 years old engines are technically outdated. And with freshly built motor with good oil, there is enough oil pressure to run oil film fine with that looser aftermarket bearings. And ACL/King race bearings are used from slightly tuned SRs and other engines, through 1000hp JZ, 2500hp GT-Rs and TopFuel dragsters which have over 10k hp (but they got rebuild engine every one run so that doesn't really matter).

Honda does the same thing with it's bearing sizes, which it kills me inside how I never see anyone in the Honda community ever use the correct method for sizing them. Everyone slaps a set of one-size-fits-all ACL or King bearings in their Honda engine and then they wonder why their builds don't last.

If the s15 is feeling down on power/pulling timing, check the knock sensor. Common issue people don't understand, but if the sensor is dodgey, the ECU pulls timing as a safety measure, but makes the engine feel like its down on boost/laggy below 4,000rpm. Seen lots of people spending $ chasing issues that doesn't solve anything and its the knock sensor.
