Let's build an elevator for my 1950's or 1960's backyard bomb shelter! I'm restoring my bomb shelter and documenting it to share with you all. Like and Subscribe it will help me a ton.

"...or it turns out you're a witch!" Wow that got me. I'm using that the next time I fail to use stairs.
Man your one liners are killer
This is by far the most unsafe thing I have ever seen anyone do on youtube, and I love it

Actually, a contender for the most unsafe thing I've seen on KZread was Wabi Sab-E pulling a 1000lbs cast-iron bathtub up steep, narrow stairs with a wench just like that one attached to various bits of a over a hundred year old house.
"This is why you wanna keep your chemicals in one of these fire cabinets..." *proceeds to leave the door wide open and shoot sparks at it* :D

The only person in the world with an elevator in a bomb shelter. Absolutely nice! 😂

Thanks Azsrael, I'm working on the next part of the shelter now, there is a little more motivation with the world events!
Looking forward to part 2. That is a Grade A genius solution right there. I'd be figuring out stair stringer geometry for 3 weeks.

You give me too much credit! I thought about it for too long before I thought of an elevator!
Dude you're amazing!! :D
Think you should have put it on the double pulley & put the winch at the base to lower the center of gravity? 👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧 looks like fun

It's getting bolted to the wall and I might go double pulley, it's changeable from single to double in 5 minutes. Double for heavy loads. Good Ideas Ray!

The extension ladder you had in the reveille video was the best bet it can be bolted to the wall and collapsed when not needed and extended when u do it’s only 12 ft so it’s not that big a deal to lower stuff in a basket instead of carrying it down the ladder

That's a good idea, I was thinking a fixed steel ladder but this makes more since!
Awesome bro.

Man I was dying when I seen you going to cut that plastic bit with the bolt cutters, I tried the same way before, couldn't understand why the hell they wouldn't cut the plastic 🤣

Who would have thought it was solid steel under there?
You're gonna need to extend this to the top of the door opening but the top pully is already above the platform. You'll problably need to move it down and modify the pully system so it will allow the platform to go as high as the opening, or maybe no less that a short step down. I'm interested in what you come up with.

The step down will be very minimal, because the shelter is above ground, like stepping into a bathtub.
Like the elevator! So smart! My only concern is if your down in the shelter, oh say in August, and one of our Monsoons hit. A lovely micro burst takes out the electricity in your area. It could be hours or days. How do you get out? I am afraid I would panic. 😱

I just found you and I love the bomb shelter series. Just a quick comment 16 MM is equal to 5/8 I’ve noticed they do that if they know it’s coming to America otherwise they’ll just use 17MM.

I knew 1/2 is close to 13mm but didn't know about 16mm and 5/8, thanks Stephen!

👍☑️ wow, must have skipped over this video or forgot to like and comment. Error corrected.
Wouldn't it have been easier to center the lift and install a crossbar about 16 inches above it with a pulley to center the cable?
You should make sure that no radioactive dust will go inside your bunker or else its just useless and it will only slowly kill the people inside the bunker.

It will eventually have a positive pressure air system to stop that. That's a good point Macho!
In the exploration video the second stair stringer was sitting inside the shelter...

1:27 I wonder if a dog made those big dents in the inside of the lid by accidentally getting stuck in there. Looks like someone got locked in there. Maybe some kids pranking each other?

I wanna do this in MY shelter! Can you give links to the materials list?
*Walks down stairs *Turns out you're a witch *Falls down stairs
I'd save that hand winch to use on the underside of the sliding door, just in case. At least you'd most likely be able to slide it open should someone play comedian and try to trap you down there while she goes out with her friends. Or something.
If it's solid steel something tells me that ain't a float ;-)

@@HerbOMatic LOL, but now I wonder why it was so overbuilt. Maybe it’s just meant to be a weight to make it easier to cast the cable and/or keep the cable from flapping around or winding up poorly when unloaded. I think I just answered my own question 🤦♂️

You wouldn't believe me, I have contacted sellers about phone booths and they would fit.... I was thinking of having the whole booth go down into the shelter.
Wow, remove two bolts on the shield plate that mounts to winch. Then on shield plate drill new mount holes… tap and die threads through frame and shield was all you needed to do… using the square tube mounting straps was just goofy as your attempts at humor.
Yes, I would like to see the math please

I'm struggling to understand why you're messing with the original design which would have functioned perfectly well in its day. Put a latch system in the slide door that locks into the concrete that you can lock and unlock from both the outside and the inside and replace the stairs and you're done. You obviously enjoy tinkering and building stuff so, why not.
@HerbOMatic

The door operates the same as original except better. The stairs was not a fun solution and would have still been costly especially if I did them in steel. I'm building it for fun and just in-case. Thanks for commenting Rick!

The original steps were actually a bad design and dangerous if using for anything other than emergency. Also, no hand rail (and couldn't be any for the first few feet) so it would get flagged if an inspector saw it, and at 12' if you fell going down, you'd slam right into that door. And like he mentioned, there was no landing area at the bottom, and the steps went right to the front of the door. How does someone carry anything down, and open the door while reaching for the knob that's down and away from you? I wouldn't let my wife use stairs like that. This elevator will be much better. He's obviously going to have to extend it to reach the top and I'd bolt it to the wall for stability, and enclose the platform with a 4' high cage and a door for added safety, as the platform area is not very large. Oh, and when the electrical is set up, there will need to be a generator at some point, or if power goes out, people could be stuck in there with no working elevator...maybe the original hand crank can be reinstalled somehow as a backup, or add rungs to the back of the elevator to climb out with? So many possibilities.

Replace the platform with a 36" wide forklift cage. Could probably get one of those used for$100.
Idk. I bet he doesn’t wash his hands after going to the bathroom.
Needs more wifey. 🔥
the elevator is a cool idea, but when the enemies start bombing your country, they also bomb the electrical infrastructure. so there may be a situation where you have a bomb shelter but you can not get inside :(
