If your cable broke, it might break you. You can make two, quarter circles attached to the base plate, turned towards the main frame on pivot pins. Then attach a bar between the quarter circles at the top also on pivot pins. Drill a hole for the cable and a spring. The cable pulls up, the spring pulls down. If the cable breaks the spring pulls the bar down. The bar turns the quarter circles into the frame at their bottom wedging them into the frame. The more weight on the platform, the better it works. I think Otis's patent is past it's exploration date by now.

You could add extra cross bracing, which could also be a ladder to climb out or down to if the power was to fail.

i would prolly add a few more cross supports that way when you're in the shelter and the bombs hit theres no electricity to lift the elevator up you can climb out like a ladder.

That's where I assume most of my tools/equipment that came in a set but is now missing something have gone to. It's nice having friends 😂

@@HerbOMatic if you got a 4ft length of tube then a 5ft poll that fits inside it. If you cut a channel in the tube so you can fix 2 bolts about 1.5ft apart to the poll allowing it to slide up & down with in, also cut side slots for the bolts to swivel in to when it is as full extension acting as a lock. You could fix the tube to the side frame of the lift about 3-4 inch from the top, so it can be pulled up & locked in place & used as a steadying handle. So when you slide open the door you reach down & pull the poll up so when you step in to the lift you have support also when stepping out of the lift at the top? 👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧

Hey Marco!, Yeah that's a project for part three definitely need a limit switch so it doesn't tear itself apart and send me or the wife plummeting!

If anyone was wondering what the lifts original purpose was. It was for racking out Medium Voltage 13,000 Volt Breakers in an industrial facility. That is why the front of the platform has hooks so you can latch the platform into breaker bay then roll the breaker out onto the platform. I have done this a few times for testing and inspections.

I'd build some manual redundancy into the system such as a ladder on the other side of the shaft. The electricity may end up running out in one way or other.

You all most have to add a ladder. As any nuke comes with a limited EMP effect. This should also be factored in with any air or water systems.

What will you do when the power is out and you are stuck down there? I think a stair is easyer, cheper and saftier.

Could have added some more crossbars to act like a backup ladder in case of a power outage during the apocalypse.

Until the 33 minutes mark i was shaking my head thinking about your safety. Then like any good project engineer you thought of your own safety and I was happy. Please continue adding butt scenes they are hilarious.

With regards to 27:05 - not sure if you do this - but using the over/under coil technique usually eliminate those sort of snags :)

I'd just go with a hay bale at the bottom for safety, works great in the 7dtd video game!

Don't worry. The EMP pulse will totally disable your elevator no problem.

Remember on groove welds nothing above base metal adds any strength. You can grind all the welds flat to the top of the base material, as long as you dont grind under flush it will be just as strong.

Great stuff, try if you can to cut on the short faces when practical to help prolong your blade life on the little band saw, chips rolling along the cut between the teeth without discard from the cut kills the the tooth some cutting edge. I am sure you already knew that but there might be some leaners here. I know you wanted to maintain the important face of the cut. watching the platform sicking in top travel makes me reconsider my design and incorporating tension rods and adjustability in my scratch build, I am not settled on this part of my build yet. I might just tack on that butt joint like your guide rails, and counter cut for beads after securing in that weight class, wont know if I care when I get there. If you care and build brake fall into it, I look forward to your design, I was considering not to do it, but I am on the fence. Have you considered a manual override for lift? Have you considered a manual jack screw set up for lifting without question hatch should it covered with debris? and I assume to dog house goes over the hatch in the future? 🙂👍 Thank you for taking us along on your build and working through things as the process went along, it offered allot. Please list a source for you snubber bushing material or that bushing assembly make, might cut some time for a build, I had considered some Delran, or some of my large diameter nylon rod stock. I truly look forward to the rest of this, it means a lot, I won't go into details on it, but my timing in finding this is excellent. looking forward to seeing your instal with gin pole, stanchion or some such💪👍👍👍

Hi again, ok 2 more suggestions.... oh, and I realize I may be getting ahead of the next videos, and/or your thinking... 1) If you are going to use that upper bolt to make it a 1300 pound lift... I would really, really consider using a GRADE 8 Bolt there!!!!! 2) Backup plan... ok, let's face facts, at some point, the power WILL go out, and you certainly do not want to be stuck at the bottom, or for that matter half way out with no way to get out!!!!! So, I would seriously recommend that you attach a couple of hooks on the side wall and keep a ladder permanently hooked on those hooks, close enough, so that if the elevator quits half way up, you can reach over, grab the ladder, pull it up to height and be able to get out!!! Safety first! Oh, a third suggestion if you have not already done so... You should really get down in the shelter, and close the hatch - then both in the shelter and in the 'vestibule' (entrance section); try your cell Phones - both your and hers and see; i.e. make sure whether or not you can call out in case you should ever get stuck down there, for whatever reason! Hope this helps.

@@HerbOMatic unless it's stuck at the top. Then again unhooking the cable and letting it to the bottom. The ladder will then be usefull. It's all based on the lifting cable. So unhooking it allows it to drop. Accessing the ladder.

If you kept the bottom wheels on. You could clean gutters in the neighborhood, put up and take down holiday lights. Wait since I use a mobility scooter and can’t walk up stairs. I could drive on then lift myself to the upstairs. I went on something like this to go down inside a under Titan underground launch center. It’s south of Tucson AZ. Not really an elevator and made strange noises. On a positive note. Your bomb shelter is ADA handicapped accessible. Maybe even get a grant for your work.

I'm thinking the entire thing needs a glow in the dark paint job now. or maybe some led back lighting :)

In an event, you need to be able to access the inside FAST. Put the stairs (or ladder) back in. Then make them fold up so you can use the space under them for storage. Other option is to install a removable ladder on the lift, this way you can still get in quickly in an emergency, but can use the lift to move heavy items in or out.

Was thinking the same type of thing in case power was out. Maybe weld ladder rungs on the back of the frame so you can drop the platform and use them for access. Guess it would depend on how close you are to the wall. As a extra bit they may also work as bracing for the frame so it does not warp out of shape after a while.

A spanner set that doesn't include 17? those are like the most common size if you work on any Japanese car lol, standard M8/M10 bolt head size. 18 is basically unused as well!

Could the winch/hoist be adversely impacted by EMP?

Can't say as that's how I'd have extended it, but hopefully it works ling term. I'd have just gotten new uprights of the right length and added them in front of the existing, thereby further stiffening the structure, and allowing more space behind to bracing. I'd also have added braces back to the wall on both sides rather than just in the center to prevent twisting of the uprights.

I feel like at some point it would have been easier to just scrap the original frame and use 2 new pieces of c channel bolted to the walls. You wouldn't need the front legs/wheels, wouldn't have as many Weld seams, and could fabricate a new mounting plate for the hoist instead of using the brackets like you did

Can't use the back as a ladder if the lift is stuck at the top or middle. A simple ladder bolted tot he wall near the hoist will work.

Are you considering a fork lift safety cage instead of this cart? Not only would it be much safer, but it might add another few inches of platform height bringing it closer to the top so you wouldn't need to step down as far getting in. They have them on Amazon for about $200.

Like a lot of others on here, I build shit for a living. So we are full off useless suggestions. I have built a similar set up for guides, or ways. Consider two loops from an engine valve spring in the holder behind your new “ Delrin” rods. It will put them under tension so it’s less shake and more controlled.

I would have placed a cross tie every 1' or so to use as a rung to climb if for any reason you lose power or the elevator breaks and you need to climb out.

Steven, I was going to do just that! Then I thought about what if the lift failed above you, then you would have to climb around it. I guess you could cut the cable and let it crash down then climb out. I will probably bolt a metal ladder to the wall next to the elevator as backup.

What would happen if a nuclear blast knocks out all power, how will you get down to your bunker quickly and safely?

Be sure to add some hydraulic oil to your entire cable. It’ll cut down on the crunchy sound and if you routinely oil it, it’ll stay rust and oxidation free extending it’s life.

Hey Les, it was built in the 1960's I would guess between 61-64. Other commenters figured it out by the political signs cast into the wall.

Using your mig as a Mig with CO2 will eliminate many of those weld balls and the need to chip off the slag from the flux core wire but I guess you already know this.

Just so you know safety first your skirting elevator safety big time a fall from 13 feet is often deadly. There is no safety preventing a fall if cable breaks there is no weight rating on that line putting any riders life at risk
