Build your own underwater LED shrimp Lights under 35.00 each!!!!

Комедия

I didn't want to pay 150.00 for underwater lights and couldn't understand why they were so damn expensive! So I like to shrimp and green lights are preferable so I went on Amazon and found most of what I needed the rest I got at ACE Hardware! Result was a great set of lights for less then 35.00 counting the extension cord! These will run on 12V batteries, computer power supply or a wall wart say from a printer! Really a win win ! Use clear if you need a fish light! Green for shrimp or get a RGB cord with controller for an underwater pool party show! You will not be disappointed! If you can solder and cut pipe with a hacksaw and strip wires you can make these cheaply but well built! Can use PVC clear pipe but it cost a lot more but you get a tougher light. When I say a lot I mean like 5-8 bucks more. :) Happy fishing!

dude...... this is EXACTLY what I had envisioned in my mind's eye when I started thinking of a way to build my own light. Right down to the old extension cord used for wiring. Thank you so much for posting this and especially for the materials link. Lights will be here tomorrow but clear PVC is proving hard to find at local retailers.

For anyone having trouble getting a water-tight seal, the most effective method I have heard of and seen is epoxy. Set your light up to rotate continuously, rotisserie style, then paint the epoxy on from top to bottom and even up the wire 6". The rotation assures no globbing and even application. After it drys you have completely sealed light that has no chance of leaking. The guy who gave me the idea left his under his dock for 3 weeks straight with no leaking.

thanks mark. I used your basic design but inserted a 10' pvc conduit into the gray waterproof fitting so my light is a pole light attached to my dock in fresh water. I ordered 2" clear pvc off of ebay so was able to fit all pieces with pvc cement. on top of that I packed all joints with jb water weld then layered with clear flex seal. totally water tight so far. great work

Mike Emery Great to hear Mike. I tried everything to resolve the water tight issue. Water leaked in after a couple weeks and I'd try another method. Finally bought 2' sections of Clear 2" pvc on Amazon and glued the ends with pvc cement and packed inside ends with 100%silicone before gluing the caps on. Thought about fiberglass on the inside but it is too time consuming. Yes you can modify in many ways. Good job!

Glad to help Doug. The hardest part is getting a good seal and giving it a good day to dry. I had 2 leaks one with the marine sealant and one with the goop which took longer to fail but in the end it leaked. My third attempt I took it apart and resoldered the connections and filled the smaller tube with silicone caulk to protect the wires. They get tucked in there but the caulk keeps them from moving around and breaking. That wire for the LED is very fragile. Seal that cap with the cord as well with silicone inside leave them apart till the caulk cures. Then goop the cap to the pipe or use silicone. I'm going to make another bid next week using PVC pipe instead so I can use PVC glue. It is also much bigger in diameter and thicker.

MarkALingle I cut the poly tubing with a hack saw which was good. the wiring a little different. I used soap as you did, then I cleaned off the soap after I pulled it thru. I put 6000 sealant on the wire and pulled back a inch in the tubing , then I took the same sealant and squeezed out enough to fill in the area of the protruding wire . it will set up by tomorrow and become a good water seal. all threads were put together with 6000. tomorrow I will heat shrink the connections after the soldering. I want to put some lead in the tube for weight and place some foam inside to keep the lead from moving then I can fill with the sealant. my led light spool did not come with two wired ends. what would you suggest? before I attached the led strip I sanded the tube and cleaned down the tube. Then I attached the strip and applied the sealant to both ends and used a rubber band to keep the ends in place. I removed them after they set up.

  • @rustykeller8264

One very minor recommendation. You have just finished soldering your wires together. The soldering iron is hot. Use the soldering iron to shrink the shrink wrap. It works very well just rubbing it lightly back and forth until you get the shrinkage you want. A direct flame is really too hot, and can damage (make brittle), the shrink wrap, and damage the wire insulation.

Thanks for the video it helped me save a lot on lights I made 6 of them. So far they have soaked for 6 hours at about 10 ft no issues. I used the pvc source that JoeB provided. I couldn't find flat end caps so I used the regular round ones found everywhere. I wire strain relief cable connectors. I bought mine from DelCity Inc item 2738 that fits the cheap 16 gauge extension cable which is what I used. To seal everything I used purple pvc cement the waterproof one. Epoxy inside and finalized with a layer of epoxy on the seams of the caps and around base of wire strain relief

Thanks for the ideas Mark. Building 2 two foot lights and on my third reassembly.Could not find clear pvc as stated in original video, so I bought clear polycarbonate. Be very careful with which adhesive you use. E-6000 reacts with the clear tube; caused many cracks on my original assembly. Thankfully I caught it prior to submerging. After much research and failure I only used the E-6000 where there was no contact with the poly tube. It seems to be a great glue and adheres to many substrates, just not for the poly. 3M 5200 was not recommended to me for this assembly but 4200 was, and seems to be great, In my opinion easier to work with because it does not run like the E-6000. For weight I'm gluing and screwing a flat pvc threaded end cap to the bottom end, then I will thread a short pvc assembly (perforated) onto it and load whatever fishing weights I need into the tube to get it to sink.

  • @1181lt

    @1181lt

Unfortunately now I've noticed cracks after using the 4200 as well. The cracks always originate from the end of the pipe and at this point I'm not sure how far they will progress. After speaking with 3M tech support they stated that the 4200 should not crack the pipe but their suggestion was to use 4000 which might give better adherence. Even though I have not been applying any pressure or clamping to the assembly, he felt that my cracking problems may be due to using 1/16" poly instead of a thicker 1/8" pipe. If I redo them, I will follow his suggestions. Just food for thought.

I created the lights similar to the original recommendation except used "Shoe Goo". I had it around and I believe it is the same as E-2000. Made by the same company anyway. The lights worked great until I submerged them to 8'. The 1/16 clear pipe developed spider cracks. I plan on switching to the clear schedule 40 PVC pipe. This should correct the issue. Also while looking at the hardware store I noticed they had heavy clear flex pipe. I plan on using it to make another version. Figured the LEDs are cheap enough so I might as well give it a try.

Rom Sam Well They run on any 12volt supply so obviously if you took say a small motor cycle battery with you it would work. How long? That's hard to say. They don't draw a lot of watts so probably last long enough. You could always field test it and also make it smaller. Since it's only you on a kayak the area wouldn't need to be as big.

I used the 5050 LEDs same company also from Amazon they are much brighter and better suited for murky waters like u find here in the Indian River, but if u use these u will need a stronger deep cycle battery since the roll consumes 5 amps so 4 lights in the water would run you about 10amps the chew motorcycle batteries would give u about 30 mins

I have tried this, had this similar idea as well. The only problem was the sealing part. I had made two end caps from fiberglass for the pvc tubes, made stoppers inside and filled the whole end caps with grease to prevent water from getting in. Worked sort of but then I had a linear crack in the tube, so when I put it down in shallow water it used to take in water and in deeper water the crack would close, anyway everything shorted and most of the lights burnt up :(. Good job for this one look great, I just need to know from where you bought the end caps or what they are called, to get that good seal? I might start thinking of building a new one this year if it works so well.

Jean Paul Mifsud Saydon Use heavy pvc 2" and pvc glue. If you can poistivelt forced some air in the plastic tube and seal it it will force water out like a divers watch. Shallow water isn't effected but for deeper installs, positive pressure will work like installing a tire valve stem, seal it and pump in nitrogen or dry air to .05 psi.

Mark, thanks for the video. You've provided me with some good idea's but have you tried the 5050 led's? Unlike you I want the brightest I can get since I'll be using it in a saltwater application. I believe they burn a lot hotter so not sure if they can withstand the internal temperature. Also one idea to weight it down would be to fill the 3/4" PVC tubing with cement powered and then simply soak both ends to harden it.

Hi, brilliant video ! I want to make something like the hydroglo 4' light as I need it for squid and sword fishing. Its specs are 648 high output LEDs, two amp draw, 4,000 lumens. Can you please advise what led tape I'd need to get something similar. Many thanks

Joe B Out of curiosity have you made shrimp lights with clear pvc. I ordered it from Zoro and the PVC pipe arrived. It is very dark and I was sort of expecting clear its like glass with a tint. Has anyone used it. Although very heavy duty isn't the darkness of the clear pvc counterproductive? Just wondering before I make the lights.

Vegaj So far I have made 4 of them with the PVC from Zoro. I believe I had the same reaction as you when I received it and thought it was tinted. The LED lights are bright enough where it had little impact on the performance. I also made internal weights that fit inside of the 3/4" PVC. Works well for me as I sink the lights at my dock and leave them in for a week at a time.

I'm also doing another build a little differently in the next week. Heavy duty using 2" clear pvc which is practically indestructible. People are making similar lights and selling them for 150.00 using basically the same materials. However they have 25 foot cords. I used a 100 foot extension cord and cut it in half for 2 fifty footers. The pvc clear is running less then 10.00 foot. I think the LED strip was 300 lights and I cut that in half 150 each light. Paid around 14$ for the lights. Cord was free, I already had it. Misc items maybe 10.00 bucks (Caps, solder, pvc adhesive.) So it's around 35-40.00 for 2 or 20 bucks a piece if you already have the cord to sacrifice. You can get 3 color lights for the same price and add a controller if you want different colors but green is good for fish and shrimp some like white for flounder. It's all up to what you want Paul. :)

A good and inexpensive way to make the lights, will have to follow your lead and get started, the video would be more helpful if you talked your way through it, we are all amateurs out here, so what the heck.
