Catching lots of shrimp with home made shrimp traps

Always trying to weasel in a practical math lesson, we are trying out our home made shrimp traps and catching lots of shrimp and prawns!
I know people can catch way more, but put this in perspective: first time making the traps, first time using them, and first time shrimping at this location. Pretty darn good for a first time.
We used our home made shrimp traps side by side with a couple purchased traps all weekend and found they worked as good or better than the expensive ones.
We fished for 3 1/2 days and averaged a couple hundred shrimp and prawns each day, fishing just 5 minutes from shore. I'm pretty confident we'll find better spots, specifically it would be great to figure out where all the giant prawns are at, they are 10 times the size of shrimp.
While we were generally shrimping, our friends were catching spring salmon. Luckily our friends are terrific and invited us to get in on the action.
If you have some old buckets, these traps would only cost 2-3 bucks each, even if you have to buy the 5 gallon buckets, it would land you around $10-15 each. We found the plastic mesh at a hardware store and it worked great.
Anyways, you can easily make these shrimp traps at home, with or without the home school geometry lesson. Dave might even go shrimping in a canoe! Good luck!

The pride I saw on dad's face when the gals were hauling up the prawns and landing the salmon was priceless! Yup, the family cohesion y'all have created has won me over big time---and MATH?? I loathe math but seeing you make it reality with the prawn traps was one of those 'teachable moments' that I cherished as a 37 year elementary teacher. Good on you!

Great video on making the Prawn Traps. Your friend needs to get a bigger net for Salmon - You need to get them to fall into the net deep enough that they can't flip out. When they do, turn the net so as to close the bag to make sure they don't jump out. That second Chinook was very close to escaping that shallow net! As for the Prawn Traps, I would hook them up so that when you pull them, the water will flow through them rather than sideways, the way you have them now. It will make them much easier to pull if you don't have the water resisting you. I would also hang the weight on the outside of the trap so you don't crush any Prawns from it bouncing around inside the trap on the way up. I like the trap puller you built - looks great.

If you want to catch octopus leave your traps out over night. The best bait I used were shrimp pellets and fish guts, any fish guts. Lead line is a wonderful thing! You might want to put some weights between your traps. Like a brick with holes. It will keep your traps closer to the sea floor.
