How To Make An Underwater Submarine LED Light Bar

In this video I am converting an everyday LED light bar into the deep diving, oil filled, underwater light bar that I use on my submarines.

    Great vid thanks!! I’m doing something similar, but only submersible to maybe 20’ max (flounder gigging) I’m using the housing the lights came with, sealing it with silicon, then filling it with mineral oil. Cooking oil sounds better as I like the yellow hue and it’s cheaper. I think I’ll also use your screw terminal idea as the only leak I have is where the cable exits the housing. Thanks again for the vid and ideas!!

    Great Video! Hey. why don't you use the diffusers? Wouldn't that increase the light by reflection? Thanks!

    Thanks Gregory, the defusers don't help under water. I don't know why but experimentation showed no benefit. Also they don't fit into the 2 inch tube. I would have to increase the size of the tube.

    Thanks for the amazing detailed video. Have you considered filling the tube with some kind of clear epoxy instead of oil? In theory it could then be a lot simpler, and could potentially handle more pressure since it would be completely solid, but there might be some gotcha I haven't considered. Thanks!

    Hi Wayne, yes did experiment with that but the epoxy makes it overheat and burn out.

    @@HankPronk ah that is good to know. I can imagine those LEDs must get super hot. I'm planning on potting some electronics (that don't get too hot) and see what happens. Thanks!

    @@HankPronk Thanks for the reply. That makes sense to me being a nice thin liquid for the armature to turn in and also added benefit of the water displacement from the WD-40. Any longevity issues on soft goods with the WD?

    Great video and light bar Hank. Why to you refer to the end pipe clamps as "bellows" They don't really flex do they? Do you try to get all the air out? or do you leave a small amount for some reason? - Brian Cox

  • @HankPronk

    @HankPronk

    Thanks Brian, yes I do remove as much air as possible. The rubber clamps do exactly that. They flex to pressurize the inside of the light to mach the outside pressure.
