One of the number one comments I hear when it comes to my sim drift livestreams is "I'm not good enough yet and don't want to get in everyone's way." Learning the basics of tandem drifting is already stressful enough, you don't have to do it on a crowded online server full of rippers who give you imposter syndrome.
While I think it's fine to learn that way, I know not everyone can, or even wants to, so I put together this video to show you a way to build confidence and tandem proximity without having to worry about wrecking the train of experienced drivers you'd otherwise be sharing the track with.
This is also a great approach for users who don't have fast internet or who's PC gives the dreaded 99% CPU occupancy message any time the smoke starts rolling in online lobbies. Use your ghost car in Assetto Corsa to practice the basics of tandem drifting before you jump online for the first time, or to get in sync with a friend with your schedules don't always line up. Last but not least, you can share a ghost file with someone else to teach them the proper line through a track!

    IMPORTANT TIP if anyone is doing this with WDTS or any car packs in general. I highly recommend heating up your tyres to orange/red level before recording your ghost lap. Why? Because you will get gapped by your ghost as soon as your tyres begin to heat up. So here's what you should do. 1. Turn on penalties (when setting up the ghost lap) 2. Turn on the 'Tyre Temperature' in game 3. Heat up your tyres by doing a burnout in the pit OR do a couple of practice lap around the track but make sure you drive off the course before the finish line 4. Once your tyres are in ideal temperature (orange or red) begin recording your ghost lap I've been doing this for a while now and it has definitely improved my chasing skills over the past couple of months.

    Nice tips! I have a few other ones but had to keep this video limited in scope or ppl would click off and it wouldn’t get any traction. I’ll probably make a second video later, that’s only for people who want to go more detailed with the pros and cons of this idea, a vid where I won’t care if it does poorly cause the main idea will have gotten out and been able to help a lot of people 👍🏻

I would have never thought to do this on my own, and using this method is giving me the confidence to start tandem at the local track irl. This has been invaluable to me as a training tool and also breathes some life into assetto again, as I was bored with the tracks used in the public servers and the rig was gettin dusty. I really hope you have been in better health and are taking care. Looking forward to the next online matsuri🤙 -Trey

    Ben, I’m a long time lurker (subscribed tho!), 2 year sim drifter, and only done occasional silly slides in my actual car. Your tips have helped my sim driving tremendously, and I loved your quote where you basically said “to chase close, you need to be able to predict what the lead car is going to do.” It’s exactly what is so fun to me. I will follow players regardless of where they go and I take it as a teaching lesson. My goal is to never hit anyone using all of the different tactics I have learned from you. It is funny when they apologize and all I say is, I chase you wherever you go! I take it as a challenge. Thank you Ben for giving genuinely helpful tips in both real life and the simulator. I will be eagerly waiting for the next upload.

    @@KameTrick Well, I drove on the internet with no issues, but the training was not that effective: random interruptions from different drivers, waiting for another guy who will lead and so on. Here you just record (I decided to make new recordings every day, but save good if I'm not able to make chasable run quickly) and start chasing. The good thing is that you can take imperfect runs and train some unstable leads as well.

    Kame, I was curious if you have any tips for console only players. My main issue is idk what I’m doing. I’m very new to drifting, and want some pointers in how I can improve, and would love a video/guide for those console-only players. For me, my main issue is idk how Im properly modulating my throttle. That, and some miscellaneous questions, like… Do I let my car retain grip after going too fast; ie, if I were to turn, do I speed up immediately afterwards, or do I do something else? Basically, I feel that my car is both unstable and too slow/sluggish. I mainly use a BMW E30 drift. I also want to know if you’ll come up with a guide going over everything that new players (ones that want to drift), including terms associated with drifting, like Grip, as well as what some beginner friendly cars you’d recommend, along with drifting-beginner tunings, for drifting. Thanks!

  • @KameTrick

    @KameTrick

    Жыл бұрын

    If you follow my tutorial to the letter up to 4:40, your ghost car will start several seconds ahead of you. So at 4:40 I suggest following loosely behind the ghost to make sure it’s driving the line you want to capture, but if you cross the finish line closer than 3 seconds behind the ghost car at the end of its lap, you’ll actually be driving a faster lap than the one you just followed, which means it will get overwritten and you’ll have lost that “good” lap. Since the lead car starts 3 seconds ahead of you, it’s common to want to drive up close to it to watch, but if you cross the finish line that close you’ll have set a new fastest lap, does that make sense?

    Check the timer app to see if it’s possible to set a time for that track. As I mention in the video, this doesn’t work for every track, only for ones where the modder defined a start finish line that you can set lap times on. Some course modders don’t care about that and leave it blank in which case a ghost lap can’t be set 🤔

    It depends on the mod creator, unfortunately. Some maps didn’t get made with some type of start/finish line data, so when you complete 1 lap it doesn’t always register, which prevents you from making a ghost. Pull up the lap time app (default) from the list on the right during a driving session. If you complete the map but it never generates a lap time then ghosts probably can’t be created for that mod track

    1) Ensure “Do not record ghost” is not checked 2) See if you can get a ghost car on ADC Drifters Paradise like me. If so, your setting are fine but the other map you tried doesn’t have a start/finish line defined (up to the modder who created it) and thus you can’t complete a lap time to create the ghost.

    Not presently, you could ask a friend to share one with you…that said, I planned from the start to release one of me on a popular track for the community…great minds ;)

    I don’t think the ghost car shows up in replays. All my footage with the ghost car were filmed live😅

    on the fence right now buy a sim rig or buy a miata in real life... choices choices @kameTrick what would you do? I want to go back to ebisu and do a actual run next year but I don't own a rwd car. Only a very fun honda fit (gd). Not sure what would give the biggest returns, buying a cheap rwd car and learn how to do 8's and linking turns with peons on a big parking lot. Or buy a sim rig practice with cars like chasers that are at ebisu on ebisu tracks.

    Building a competent sim will be cheaper and faster most likely. A miata is a great grip car, but needs an and kit and an engine swap, boost, or nitrous injection to be a very compelling option, which adds up quite a lot of expense. That said, drifting IRL is a really cool feeling that you can only get IRL. Sim practice would be better for going to Ebisu though, as you can simulate both that type of car and the tracks well, whereas going from doing cone courses in a miata to even North Course (the easy one) will be a big jump up in skill requirements, especially given the limited amount of seat time you may be able to get. If you’re set on an Ebisu trip and can afford it I’d honestly just go sim 🤷🏻‍♂️ But *good* sim: DD wheel, 32” triples or VR, RTX 3080 or better GPU, etc etc
