Bugera 1960 Infinium - Some 80's Hair Metal Riffs

Музыка

I initially recorded this as part of a video comparing the stock Bugera preamp tubes with an EH in V1 and a couple JJs in V2 and V3. Once I put in this secondary set, though, it was painfully clear the original, stock Bugera tubes sound considerably better. To the best of my knowledge Bugera tubes are rebranded Shuguang tubes (China). Whatever they are, they sound extremely good. So I decided, instead, just to make a short little video showcasing some of my favorite 80's Hair Metal riffs since this amp has that vibe in abundance. I hope you enjoy!
****Signal Chain****
Bugera 1960 Infinium totally stock into a Suhr Reactive Load and into my Apogee Ensemble Thunderbolt interface into my Mac running Logic Pro X. Once in Logic the signal is being run through Redwirez MixIR2 plugin and one Celestion G12M impulse response (Royer 121 and Shure SM57 combined). The IR treated signal is bussed to a plate reverb and some stereo delay. No EQ, compression or other tone altering effect is anywhere in the chain.

    @@ardenunger2932 It's somewhere between a 1959 and Super Lead from what i've been able to find. It's like a hot rodded 1959 i guess but it has some useful features that the 1959 doesn't have, like a blend without having to jump the inputs, and a cascaded input aswell as a parralel input for increased gain

    @@Islandsoundzz - There will definitely be more video, I'm planning an extremely thorough walk through of this and a few other amps. Truth be told I'd planned to already have them done but I was in Aruba on a gig last month and developed a detached retina in my right eye so had to fly back for emergency surgery. The result is was an extremely red eye and looks kinda rough LOL. Once that's healed though I'll be back on track. @@TheGuitarNerdShow I’ve been interested in this amp for a while but what puts me off is the 150 watt power rating lol. That seems excessive 😬 I wish they had a 30 watt version available. How is it volume-wise compared to say a 50 watt Marshall?

  • @TheGuitarNerdShow

    @TheGuitarNerdShow

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@topherrrr92 Hi Chris - sorry for the delay, didn't see this unutil now. TBH, the difference in volume between a 50 and 100 watt Marshall (this amp's rated at 150 but basically it's a 100 watt Plexi) is only 3db. Not a whole lot of audible volume difference, but a 100 watt head has a good bit more headroom, meaning if you're cranking and do so low chugging riffing, the 100 watt amp is going to give you more clean low end whereas a 50watt amp will compress a bit more. They still sound great but it's a different thing. That's why, even though my amps stay at home in a small room, I go for a 100 watt if I have the option. From what I can tell, newer amp makers have found a way around this as their 50 watt amps sound really great and don't seem to lack for, or over compress the low end.

If you try 6V6s please let me know how it works and if it alters the tone at all. I will say that, if you choose to go that route, it might be best to replace all the tubes with those - two EL34s in there will still equal roughly 50 Marshall watts - the difference between a 50 and 100 watt Marshall is roughly 3db. • @TheGuitarNerdShow

    @TheGuitarNerdShow

    6 жыл бұрын

    The master volume is disengaged, I'm not using it. Keep in mind, I am not running the amp into a speaker cabinet - I'm running from the speaker output of the amplifier into my Suhr Reactive Load - this allows me to tun my amp directly into my computer audio interface so that I can record the amp, including the sound of the cranked power tubes, directly without having to have a really loud speaker cabinet going. Once into my computer, in my recording software I have the amp's signal through an IR loaded and then through a speaker impulse - a way of (very effectively) simulating the sound of various speakers, cabinets, microphones and combinations thereof. In this video I'm using an impulse response I bought from Celestion, the speaker company, it's a G12M greenback with both a Royer 121 and a Shure SM57 on it. I live in a residential neighborhood so cranking a 100 watt Marshall type amp isn't a possibility (I think the old people in the neighborhood would fall over dead LOL) so this gives me the option to get the sound of my amps. It works quite well!

    @@dinofond- Dude, this amp could seriously sterilize a Sith Lord at 100 yards! I still haven't mustered up the guts to run this amp into a 4x12 LOL! For me it's been all Reactive Load and impulse responses. Course, I knew going in that this is how I'd be running it. As for tips, really only a couple. First, with regard to an attenuator, if it has a load box feature only go with a Reactive Load, not Resistive - there's a world of difference. A good attenuator is pricey but well worth it. I'm looking at the new Boss Tube Amp Expander - kind of a swiss army knife. Load Box, IR host, bunch of stuff. But it's expensive. Second tip, look at the settings in my video and start from there, see how it sounds. Good luck, enjoy the amp!

I was messing around with it just yesterday, playing a 1992 Mexi Strat with a Duncan '59 in the bridge and, man, I swear it sounded just like the VH1 tone. That pickup seems to have a bit hotter output than the JBs in my other Strats and the tonal balance is really close to that EVH tone, at least with this amp.

    I love mine. Who needs Marshall? This 1960 does what a Plexi does for 1/5 the price, although aesthetically it can’t touch a Marshall’s cool look, but the sound and quality of the Bugera makes up for its hideous, strangely tall appearance. It’s like a “special” waterhead amp which requires a special prescription helmet so it won’t hurt itself. As long as I don’t look at mine, I love it.

    Hi, thanks for your kind words! From the Line Out of the Suhr Reactive Load the signal goes into my computer and into my DAW. Inside the DAW I run an impulse response host plugin. The speaker simulation is done using impulse responses. They're incredibly realistic sounding! There are many impulse responses available - Ownhammer has a bunch of them available, as does another company called Redwirez (these are the first ones I ever used). Celestion has also gotten into the game fairly recently with Impulse Responses (IRs) of their own. OH and Redwirez packs come with a TON of IRs.They all feature many different mics recorded at many different positions - at first it can be a bit overwhelming but the key is to find just the right IRs to suit your tastes. Celestion has chosen a bit of an easier approach. There are multiple IRs for each pack, but not hundreds or thousands per pack and theirs are labelled (and named) more descriptively, categorized by Mic and named according to characteristic of the micing position (Bright, Dark, Balanced etc). I really like this approach. The IR host I use is called MixIR 2 from Redwires. For each instance of the plugin there are 6 banks into which you can load 5 or 6 IRs each. I can't think of a reason to use that many but I ten to use more than one at a time - say, an IR of a 57, one of a Royer 121, maybe one of a room mic, one of a rear mic, etc. The possibilities really are endless. I have two Suhr Reactive Load boxes, allowing me to run two amps at a time and blend them together (on separate tracks) in my DAW. This helps me get some really great sounds that I can't get with one amp. In the near future I plan to shoot a few videos dealing with and detailing this topic. I'm planning a relaunch of this channel very soon so please subscribe and hit the bell icon so you'll be notified of new content. Thanks again for your kind words and for your interest!!!

    Hey Dallas, Thanks for the kind words. The FX are added in my DAW. I run the amp into a Suhr Reactive Load, then into my Mac via my interface. In my DAW I run the signal through an impulse response plugin. On this video I was using an IR of a 4x122 loaded with Greenbacks, either Celestion's IRs or an Ownhammer variant. The Delay and Reverb are added via a send in my DAW. Now, as for how I would go about using this amp to get this tone in a live setting? Whew. Honestly, unless you're playing pretty big places I don't know. It has a Master Volume but it's still putting out some decent volume even with the Master dialed back. In this day and age, quiet stages are becoming more and more of a requirement, hate it as I may. Maybe try Suhr's new Reactive Load box which also features the ability to host IRs. Or the Ox from Universal Audio is really nice. Other than something like that, I don't know.... Thanks again!

    Hi, I am thinking of buying the Bugera PS-1 Attunator for this amp but its a 100watt attunator, how important is that?

  • @TheGuitarNerdShow

    @TheGuitarNerdShow

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi John! I have no experience with the Bugera PS-1 however I think it would work fine. As Bugera is the maker of both the amp and the attenuator, I'm sure they've built the PS-1 with their a,mps in mind. Additionally, while the 1960 is marketed as being 150 watts, it features, essentially, the same power section as an old 100 Marshall Plexi-era amp. The method used to rate an amp's output power is done by connecting the amp's output to a scope (which also puts a load on that output preventing transformer damage). A sine wave is run into the amp's input and the output of the amp is measured by the scope. Now, traditionally, the output rating of the amp has been the point right before the output signal (on the scope) crosses over into distortion. On many amps this happens at around '3' on the volume knob. An old Marshall, for instance, hits it's 100-watt rating fairly early on the volume knob yet continuing to turn it up produces even more output. So, in reality a 100-watt Marshall is capable of putting out well over 100 watts. I believe when Bugera is rating the output wattage of their amps, they're rating it at full output, not at the point just before distortion. Generally though, amps with 4 EL34s, 6L6s, 5881s etc are considered 100 watt amps. I use a Suhr Reactive Load, which is rated at 100 watts, yet even cranking the 1960 Infinium all the way to 10 it handles it fine. Talking to John Suhr online, he said that the unit was specifically designed with an old 100 watt Marshall in mind and would easily handle the full output. I gotta believe that Bugera's thinking is the same. Now, my concern with the PS-1 is that it's a passive attenuator, like the old Marshall Power Brake, the Scholz Power Soak, etc. A passive load is just that, passive. The load doesn't change or react to the amp, which in turn doesn't get to react to the changing load. In an amp-speaker scenario, the load on the amp from the speakers is somewhat variable, producing what's called an impedence curve. The amp 'sees' this load and reacts in different ways. This is a HUGE part of the amp's tone, touch response etc etc etc. You won't get that with a passive load box. My advice would be to seek out an attenuator that features a REACTIVE load. There are several out there. They're more pricey but well worth it. The ultimate solution in my opinion is the Boss Tube Amp Expander. I had one for a few days before I returned it because I simply don't need it (I run a Kemper live - long story LOL). But the way it works, it doesn't attenuate insofar as it brings the amp's output down to line level, then has it's own power amp built in, which is very transparent, allowing you to then dial the volume to exactly where you need it. I've tested it and it works as advertised, it's really an excellent piece. It also has a TON of other features that will certainly come in handy in the long term. I'd seriously consider looking into and saving for one of these. Just my .02 cents. Hope this has been helpful! Thanks for watching!

    So since the Reactive Load is rated for 100W and the amp is rated at 150W, would that mean I could use a proper 100W attenuator at 16 ohms with this head?

  • @TheGuitarNerdShow

    @TheGuitarNerdShow

    5 жыл бұрын

    It's rated at 150 watts but the power section is basically that of those old school Marshall 1959SLP heads. Those were rated at 100 Watts. I think Bugera is being a bit liberal with their wattage ratings. A 4xEL34 amp is a 100 watt amp, same as a 4x6L6 amp. Where the confusion sometimes occurs is in how wattages are measured. Basically, as I understand it, the way this is measured is by running a sine wave into the front end of amnestying amp - amp's output would be fed to a scope that would measure the output. Such a scope can see when an amp's signal becomes distorted so they would measure up until just below the point where distortion occurs & that's the rated wattage. On a tube amp, especially those old school Marshalls, you'd hit the end of the clean power capacity around 3 on the volume knob, LOL. That doesn't mean higher positions on the volume knob(s) don't get progressively louder - in fact, it's said those old Marshalls, when really cranked, actually were pushing 150 or more watts. So perhaps Bugera is rating it at total watts pushed, not watts with low THD. The reason for load boxes, such as the Suhr Reactive Load, and other attenuators, is to be able to get that cranked up tube amp sound at a manageable volume level. For a lot of people a cranked Plexi (or Hiwatt or Orange, etc) is the holy grail but something we don't usually get to experience because of volume restrictions we all have to deal with. I saw a forum posting on The Gear Page where John Suhr was asked about running such an amp through his Reactive Load - he said he builds them to be robust enough to handle a cranked old school Marshall Plexi type amp. That's exactly what the 1960 Infinium is. So if an attenuator is rated at 100 watts to be able to handle a 100 watt Marshall then you should be safe. I run mine with both volumes around 6 (anything higher just gets a bit gnarly for my tastes) and have run it for 5-6 hours straight with not one problem.....

    Thanks for your kind words. The pickup is a Seymour Duncan JB - I love that pickup - have it in two Strats, an Ibanez and three LTDs. As far as gain on tap, It's a little deceptive. When playing chunky chord rhythms & stuff it's nice & fat, like a Plexi. Going to single string lead runs, you can definitely feel that this isn't preamp distortion like a lot of us are used to. It really gives me even more appreciation for guys like EVH who played all that amazing stuff at a surprisingly low amount of gain.

    Hey James - Yep, that's guitar straight into the amp. The amp is running into a Suhr Reactive Load which serves the line level signal (from the speaker output so I'm getting the power section's sound) and into my interface, where I'm running it through speaker impulse responses. It's a great setup for home but not very portable. I just ordered the brand new Boss Tube Amp Expander, which is basically similar to the UA Ox Box but with more features. This will allow me to run any of my amps into any of my speaker cabs and, because it has a built in 100 watt Class AB power amp, I can run it at any volume I want. This differs from an attenuator in that it dissipates the wattage coming from the amp, just grabbing a line level signal, then amplifying it - so instead of an attenuator, which almost always uses 'stepped' volume control, this is 100% smooth, the built in amp is apparently very transparent, it includes some built in effects, I can load my own speaker IRs or use the speaker simulation built into the unit AND can run a stereo signal to FOH or my interface or wherever. It should arrive Monday. I've been having some issues with my eyes, multiple surgeries, etc (which is why there's been no new content in like forever) but when that's cleared up I plan to do some video on this piece. It looks to be a killer situation to our problem of all this amp, no where to crank it! Stay tuned....

    This was a while ago but I think I put the signal chain below the video in the description. I'm not running through a speaker cab - I was living in a pretty tight neighborhood at the time, neighbors just a few feet away. The amp goes from speaker out to a Suhr Reactive Load which then feeds the line level signal to my interface into my computer. In my DAW the signal then passes through an IR loader with one impulse response of a Celestion G12M Greenback that was made with a Royer 121 and a Shure SM57.

    Sounds awesome.. do you find the suhr reactive load better than using the PPI master on the back?

  • @TheGuitarNerdShow

    @TheGuitarNerdShow

    3 жыл бұрын

    Infinitely, yes. Using the PPIMV, there is still some tonal loss. If you consider all the factors that come into play with the killer tone of a cranked Plexi style amp, though putting the MV after the PI tube is very helpful, we're still not getting all the factors of a cranked amp. For instance, when an amp is reeeaaallly cranking, the output transformer is being worked extra hard - that contributes a unique sag factor to the sound, one which these amps produce brilliantly. Also, while power tube distortion is actually fairly gnarly, the lowered signal caused by the PPIMV does somewhat affect the overall tone. It becomes apparent as the MV is turned lower and lower. And let's not forget how a high volume signal from a guitar amp affects the sound of the speakers. Also, even at it's lowest setting, it's not really 'sleeping baby in the next room' bedroom volume. Now, going into the reactive load, we're getting the cranked Plexi in all it's roaring glory! That's helped by the amazing quality of the Suhr RL. Not all RLs sound equal - but that's a topic for another video (Hmmmmm, that's a good idea for a new video). But back to the topic - using the RL--->IRs method, you can be as loud as your system/studio will allow, or as soft, even just headphone level. Also, when doing it this way, the sky's the limit with regard to speakers, cabinet configs, microphones/mic positions etc. All of these make an enormous difference. I use a Kemper when gigging (just so many tonal options and it sounds amazing). My most used rock sound was created running this Bugera through the Suhr RL into my DAW with a few impulse responses of a Celestion Lynchback loaded 4x12 (various mics and positions). Once in the Kemper I was able to tweak that profile into both a KILLER classic rock crunch, a fairly brutal heavy rhythm sound and a couple of fantastic lead tones. Without a full on studio facility, no neighbors and plenty of time to make mic adjustments, I'd never have gotten this sound with my Kemper if I didn't use the RL/IR method. Guess you could say I'm kinda sold on the idea LOL!!!!!!

    They're the same as in the picture of the amp that's inset at the top left of the video. No pedals. One difference might be that I was running from the amp to a load box, then loaded some impulse responses instead of mic'ing a speaker. This way I could run the amp with the volumes up a bit without using the Master Volume that's on the rear. Old Marshalls that this amp is modeled after were also known for being unforgivingly bright, until you crank 'em way up, then that bright top end would kinda level off....some.

    Hi, I'm getting an attenuator (Harley Benton PA-100) for my 1960 infinium. The manual says it handles up to 100 watt. Is the Bugera too powerful for that? I have pulled two tubes away but I wanted to put them back as soon as I get the attenuator. I literally couldn't find the actual RMS wattage of the 1960 anywhere, only its peak power (150)...

  • @TheGuitarNerdShow

    Hi Fabio - I can't say for sure if it'll handle it or not. It might be a good idea to contact the manufacturer (Harley Benton I guess???) and ask if their product will handle a 100 watt Plexiglas-style amp. They'd be able to better answer than I am. Generally an amp powered by 4xEL34 or 6L6s, 5881's etc are considered to be 100 watt amps. For example - those old Plexiglas Marshalls were rated at 100 watts but that rating is the point just before where the output stage starts to distort (around 3 on the volume knob LOL). As the volume is dialed up the amp DOES put out more wattage (and volume). I think that's why Bugera rates it at 100 watts.

    Steve Senes Hi Steve, thanks for answering. I contacted Thomann and they said they're compatible so I just ordered it... Can't wait to finally crank it up! I think your video was the one which actually made me go looking for an attenuator/load box. You really make this amp shine! Have you ever tried to dial in a clean(ish) tone? In the parallel input the bright channel is way too bright at lower volume, so I often sometimes find myself using the Cascade input, which is originally made for high gain I guess, but it actually tames that bright channel more...

    I've tried the attenuator yesterday, and the sound was astonishing! This amp with the bypassed PPIMV sounds a LOT punchier and warmer as I expected, and I didn't notice any frequency loss... However... There's a "full power" led which lights up with the volume past 1.5, or even with the volume at 1 when I hit hard the strings. The manual (the PDF one, 'cause the printed one didn't have any information about that!) just states it's an overload indicator. There wasn't any noticeable noise and the attenuator stayed cool, but since I didn't want to mess things up, I pulled those two tubes again... And that led still lights up with the volume on 3! So, I'm contacting Thomann again (apparently they own Harley Benton, so...) and ask about that...
